The trapinch/sandyghast fusion is an homage to the real life bug Antlions, that hunt with exactly that method- make a pit, stick your mouth out of it, and chomp everything that falls in

that wasn’t trapinch dying in quicksand, that was a reference to its dex entries (they wait at the bottom of sand pits, waiting for their prey to fall in).

I have no idea what the triple battle thing was, but one of the randomizer settings does include the gym leaders changing if you have to rematch them. that might have affected things.

it was not quicksand it was a ant lion a type of bug that hides in sand pits waiting for bugs to fall in
