Dude, that JVC handles Composite with pristine clarity. It's absolutely beautiful. I really would love to see Super Mario Bros. 3 running on RFU for this machine. I bet it's flawless!

@@RetroTechUSA I noticed the Commodore 1701 has a different looking color palate compared to the 1702. Why is that? I figured maybe it's just settings or is that just how different they actually are?

@@the1ucidone the 1702 has a slightly different colour phosphor so that might have something to do with it
@the1ucidone
@the1ucidone 2 года назад
@@mikewieclawek314 So why are their so many different phosphor's? Is it because they use a different chemical make-up and amount? I don't really understand phosphors well enough yet.
@mikewieclawek314
@mikewieclawek314 2 года назад
@@the1ucidone Not sure the exact reason why, but I think darker phosphor will give deeper blacks and improve image quality so it makes sense that manufacturers would chase that as the tech advanced. The 1702 does have a bit darker phosphor than the 1701. Unrelated, but the 1702 is also way lighter due to a different power supply.

JVC is a great alternative for sure Steve. I started off with JVC because of it's price and moved along to other names because of how cheap they were at the time. Still affordable in my books and glad to see JVC mention in your upload bro. Maybe for a future video, would you like to discuss on unknown brands that are worth investing into bro? I know the Chinese, Taiwanese, and South Koreans had a few that tried to imitate the quality from Sony and Panasonic at one put Steve. Anthony..

With CRT's it sometimes feels like the best times to get those are long gone. If you can make a deal with city recycling, you might be able to get some on a budget. Today you need to hunt for other vintage gems: Plasma and CCFL LCD's. These often have an abundance of retro gaming connectors, and may not CRT accurate, but still an amazing picture quality. Some have really nice upscalers and denoise algoritms. Those PC Engine Soldier games look stellar on a 40 inch plasma over the SCART plug. I found very decent plasma's from Panansonic for 30€ or such.

I'd love to see a comparison of those three monitors. I'm loving the picture on my 1702. I have a curious issue watching 4:3 DVDs on it. If I play a DVD on my PS2, Xbox 360, or DVD player. I get this strange peeling at the top of the screen. It's as if one of the interlaced frames is being peeled down like a piece of paper. 4:3 video games however look perfect.

Nice. I know Philips was the OEM for the Commodore 1084, and they made their own Philips branded unit, and also a couple for Atari as well. But I didn't know JVC made their own version of the 1701/02, cool! I'm still hunting for a 1701/02 that's not $500 "untested" 😒

They weren't. They bought their tubes in Taiwan. Philips, unlike Sony, was hamstering all sort of tubes for their products. They even used ones from Loewe in Germany, which were much better than their own made-in-Europe tubes. The 1084 is definitely not a Philips tube.

Ahh, interesting to finally see a JVC model that uses that same shell mould! I have four 1701 Commodore monitors, only one had a mysterious hole in the bottom centre dark brown bezel... Got my answer - it was where the JVC badge would go. Still hunting down other models that use this shell... Behind the Commodore logo and 1701 plate on this same particular shell, are a bunch of holes. Looks like for 2 LEDs, 4 or more buttons and possible an LED channel number display. Would love to eventually find what model and branding was used with that full setup

The CRT tube in the 1701 is pathetic. The darker the shade of grey a CRT TV tube is when turned off the better. If it isn't a Sony Trinitron or Panasonic Quintrix it's going to be crap as far as the 8bit ERA goras. If you are talking SNES/PS1 generation replace Sony with Mitsubishi Diamondtron. I never liked the Commodore 1700 series, they do have S-Video, but their tube have a really bad dot pitch and thus have poor resolution. The obvious star is of course the Commodore 1084, but even the 1081 (less connectivity) is a way better monitor than the 1700 series. TVs from the 90s generally have pretty good tubes and electronics and compete pretty with with a Commodore 1084... if they have SCART input... which makes it a mostly European party. Still you could consider to RGB mod a 90s TV, gets you a good retro gaming monitor at a good price.
@IsaacKuo
@IsaacKuo 2 года назад
I find, at least with NTSC, that the 1702 is pretty much the perfect retro gaming monitor. The dot pitch does a great job of mitigating the damn visible scanline gap effect (like on a 1084), and it's a great match for the usual 256 to 320 pixel horizontal resolution used by most games of the era. It also has really good brightness, contrast, and color, at least with NTSC. The 1084 is so muted and dull in comparison. Of course, it's far better for 80 column text and anything in HIRES interlace mode (the interlacing gets rid of the damn visible scanline gaps). I really hate the visible scanline gap effect ... it's like looking through Venetian blinds tilted halfway.
