Phil there should be a small PCB board in the top of the camera on the left side under the power button and selector wheel maybe it has water damage as I fix a lot of cameras and these tend to stop working and prevent the camera from turning on.

If not that the power IC chip he mentioned that was in the area of the damage is worth checking. On iPhones IC chips often fail after water damage or just in general especially backlight IC . Common fault without water damage also.

Electronics might not always be the most fun thing but it's really cool to see a guy show people how things work how to work on it watching these videos just for fun that's great but when you can get some knowledge from it I really appreciate the talent this guy has its never bad to learn how to work electronics a little better and understand things

Phil, Great video. I agree with your hesitation on buying a second unit to use as a donor. The total cost for both might be close to the price of a new camera. I hope that your new workshop has decent heating. most of your newer videos show you in heavy jacket while your older videos show you only wearing a vest or light shirt. Best to you and the family.

Thanks buddy. To be honest it's not cold in the workshop. I just feel more comfortable in that jacket then in my others lol. That said, most of the videos I record seem to be in bad weather lol. I will be putting Central heating in the new workshop though

you should maybe try unpluging everything as many flex cables as posible and try to turn it on , or at least follow current draw where it goes , either thermal camera or alcohol to see where it evaporates to get a clue if any chip is shorted . Something is drawing that current find out what

Assuming you mean the image sensor and focus mechanism with "lens"? Unless there is a short there on power or data lines, it should not stop it from booting. In most cases, the screen will turn on and give an error message of some sorts if that part of the camera is damaged. It's not that different from a gaming console, it has power lines, fuses, data lines, some sort of BIOS in a flash or something like that. The power consumption is slightly worrying, I am guessing it is trying to boot and hanging somewhere, it should boot and then go into standby/power off if no buttons are pressed. If nothing better gets suggested, I would reball the BGAs after tracing power lines to find all fuses.

those type of cameras has like a fuse in every fricking board and in the main board like 3, one for battery, other for flash and other like for the lens, and when has water like that but not power on is because sometimes the superior flex where the zoom is, or is the flex in short or a button is like always pressed, so if a button is pressed, the others buttons dont work, and so is the power button

yeah step number 1 is find out that draw. its not normal. follow the input circuit and start desoldering stuff to isolate where the current is going.

I dont know if the tz 80 is the type of camera, where the battery door must be closed for it to work. The manual states the camera cant be used while cable plugged in charging. Interesting video.

It is not, the battery door switch is mostly a thing on Canon Cameras.

Cameras are a pain. I have a fuji one, X-T30, EVF not turning on, have tried every single thing, even changed the LCD driver on it, still nothing. Zero faults on the board that I can find but in general impossible to debgug. If one could only get schematics for these... nah, who would buy new then, right? :)

Bro. I’ve been a subscriber for a few months now and wanna continue to give you my support. I’m finding it disappointing watching multiple videos of unsuccessful repairs. I understand you can’t fix everything but maybe spread them out a bit. From the tv, saws all tool, a switch with WiFi problems, to this camera. I just wanna see something fixed at the end of a 30-40 minute video at this point.

Be interesting to see you pit your wits against some old electrical stuff like B&O which Vince has been covering a few... Maybe do a collab with Vince, Joey, the two Steves etc, see if a mutual friend can take off say all the working components off a console board except the cpu and gpu stuff and the ram and have it up against the clock for the quickest time to a working console, first person to do it clocks the time then when done takes off the components and sends to next victi... participant and fastest time wins maybe start off with a Switch, then a Xbox of some sort then finish off with a PS... Console has to be working and the clock doesn't stop til its powering up and loading a game... just an idea...

Or try your hand at repairing a quartz or digital watch, Stes seemed to like it and Vince is quite good at 'em, some of the vintage quartz and digital stuff is a delight to work on from the electronic viewpoint where wires are so fine you can't solder them but use gold filled epoxy to bond them electrically... have to have the patience of a saint there :D
