Can I fix someones botched repair on this Galaxy Note Fan Edition? 

I requested a refund of $100 for the screen. Of cause the seller proposed a refund of $0 but after escalating the dispute I received my refund. Maybe I should of requested more? Oh well it works with a slight defect and I now only paid about $40. Just happy to have received something back!

Hey, Hugh! Just thought of mentioning that the unit you have is from Malaysia. The F in the model number represents the country it was meant to be sold in. I am also from Malaysia and let me just say that this is type of repairing process is common here. Currently, I am restoring my friend's Galaxy S6 which he gave to me to keep. He did tell me that he got a battery replacement for it (from a sketchy repair guy) and a few months later, it stopped working after he dropped it. Once I opened it, I was greeted with a mess. It was filled with gunks of sticky dirt and dust. Whats worse is that the battery flex cable was snapped. The battery was not seated in position because the adhesive applied was low quality and it dried out. This explains why the battery stopped working. The battery was also refurbished. My friend also told me that the repair guy charged him RM300 (about 75 USD/ about 100 Aussie Dollars) for the battery replacement. The are other issues with it also (most of which you had with your unit) but this was just bad. He not only got some guy to perform a botched repair on that Galaxy S6 but he also got scammed (A new and original battery replacement costs RM30, about 7 USD or about 10 Aussie Dollars, from a reputable 3rd party seller).

I recall that the Note 7 was a hit with reviewers, which now seems entirely forgotten. I'm glad someone is preserving a few of these great phones, minus the improperly made batteries, of course.

Based on the white boot up background, It is mainly focused on the mobo, so it might be the fact that the mobo was previously in a gold phone.

I wouldn't mind using it with the burn-in. It doesn't look too bad. Plus it's a Note Fan Edition, a very rare device. I already have one as a daily driver. I'm looking to get a few more to add to the collection.

I still own an original Note 7. I remember getting in the mail a few days before it was released in the stores. Verizon actually let me keep the original when the recall happened and sent me another one free of charge. when that recall happened they only had me send back the 2nd one and never the first. my sister also had the same thing happen to her.

I would also point out that burn-in doesn't happen to LCDs. I have never seen an IPS panel with burn-in. It is a problem with OLED and AMOLED.

The screen burn in might have something to do with the connections. You'll have to take it apart and really clean up the connections and make sure they fully seat right. This happened to me on a Note 9 screen replacement (ghost/burn in images)

The screen burn in of a map app is most likely from the driver side app of some ride-sharing service (Grab, Uber, Gojek, Lyft, etc), based on what I see on some used Galaxy phones for sale where I live. 11:58 So that's how Galaxy S8 and later can tell what colour they are! It's from the display! I can now imagine replacing the display on my black Note8 and it thinking it's a blue model. 13:07 It has a Note FE logo on the power off menu?

All phone repairs would go well if everyone took this much care and pride in doing it

I had this phone in black color but the AMOLED screen is broken and it has a Android Pie 9.0 software with a one ui 1.0 so I'll tell you guys how did it broke It fell on the 2nd floor in SM city cebu here in Philippines that's why and i have another Note FE but it is a Korean Variant with SK Telecom Band LTE boot animation but it has a charging problems

I want to believe that this phone ended up like that not because of malice, but stupidity. Whoever tried to fix it didnt knew what it was and didnt have the parts, so he scrapped together what he could but then realized that now it didnt want to charge. Probably got it with a smashed screen, and after replacing it and discovering that something was very, very wrong with the charger he just gave up on it and sold it.

Not sure why but viewing you videos is therapeutic to me. Well done good Sir keep them coming. Perhaps a video on a Apple server???? A true challenge!

How can I ever trust third party phone repairs when Hugh's videos show their jobs being half-assed

Using this phone, dont know if its me, mine has thermal issues, and the performance takes a massive hit. The temp of the room makes a massive difference, it ranges from 150k-195k on antutu

my dad used to repair iphones, (and occasionally samsungs, but he hated repairing them, at the time iphones were easier to repair, maybe not now, but then they were I think, or atleast he was used to them) he got the screens and parts from china, but too often would he have to return a part (like screens) that simply didn't work. he quit around the iphone 6-7 (maybe later)when replacement screens were like half the price of the device, and almost impossible to find. edit: just to clarify I believe he brought the parts from chinese ebay sellers, and I believe he would also check reviews. generally most parts worked, even if that is shocking.

What do you do with all the phones that you repaired afterwards?

Most of the Galaxy Note FE’s I have seen don’t have the Samsung logo at the top. Edit: The Note FEs without the Samsung logo are only for the Korean model.

You are fearless in you attacking these Samsung phones, a bit envious on my part. I own three LG V20 phones because they are easy to service, they use one size screw for the entire phone, and they have replaceable batteries. Also, I have all of the parts for them when they break, or I accidently run them through the washer and dryer.

The map app is google maps in driving navigation mode, that's what's caused the burn in

The developer of the Note 7 should’ve been thinking about the battery before selling the Note 7 since that is how the Note 7 exploded

It actually baffles me how many picks and tools people use to open Samsung’s. If you have enough heat, all you need is super thin metal and insert it about a mm or 2 just to get it started. Then use one blue pick. I’ve never damaged the paint or cracked the glass.

The "what could've been factor" of having the Note 7 recalled twice led me to the Note 20 ultra and to stumble on to here to watch Note 7 videos for some reason

I totally agree with what you said. I also repair phones from time to time and unfortunately it is tough to source original screens here in Croatia, so I only have sites like Ebay and Aliexpress, and I sometimes try to find dead phones with working screens and similar. But yeah, screens from China sellers are always so fragile or sometimes they don't even fit or work properly, and getting refund is so hard even with clear evidence. But unfortunately I don't have another source to get them so I deal with what I have.

I have a Note Fan Edition that boot looped and I bought one on Mercari and it was running stock 7.0 Nougat and it’s back up and running perfectly. I got lucky to find a broken one for $70 and it is now working perfectly and I use it along my daily driver

having the same phone but in blue .. still working fine . if its indeed the a malaysian model/variant , can probably say the previous owner tried getting it repaired at one those numerous 1hour or less phone fix booths that seem to pop up in most shopping centres here . btw , greetings from Malaysia

Hi Hugh I attempted a screen replacement on a iPhone 6s and it all went well thanks to your video . Well until I went to plug the screen in. The connector connecting the home button fell off the ribbon cable and now I have no home button THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE. So I’ve spent more on screens than I have on the phone. Is there a way I can fix it or do I have to spend yet another £20 on a new display?

I have also purchased stuff from China that isn't as advertised. They don't seem to care once they have your money. Hardly any protection for buyer as cost to send back can exceed the buy price.

The problem I see when sourcing from anywhere but China is that often the seller might be in the West but is selling the same Chinese merch so you're back to square one...

Well, I guess I was lucky then. I purchased one oled screen from China (it was for model not sold in our country, so I had no other option) and it works flawlessly. I chose one of more expensive listing also paying attention to reviews, and it has no functional nor cosmetic flaws. Not that I would recommend sourcing china parts, I had to wait about 1.5 months and it was a lottery whether it will work or not.

I don't know why, maybe it's nostalgia, but the note 7 is the best looking front side of a phone ever, I prefer it to any full screen display, but I hate bezels on any other phone, idk it's weird

Sounds like you need a better supplier in China. Which can be hard to come by. I got lucky with mine. If I want a defective display that's what I get. If I want original, copy or whatever I always get what I paid for. I do notice some are shady. But I also buy quite a bit at a time so maybe they want to be more honest then just selling 1 LCD. And sometimes its just luck. Good video as always.

Lesson learned: Do not trust all repair shops. My friend had a samsung galaxy J5 2017 and the shop he went at instead of fixing the broken screen they just threw in it double side tape and they had damaged the oled display and it would not faction right.He to pay two times and he just decided to change his phone. Never but NEVER trust sketchy repair shops mates.
