Suggested things to check: 1. Make sure drive motor spins freely by hand. If not drop one small drop of oil onto the shaft and rotate by hand until free. 2. Clean tray open/close micro switch (near front or rear of tray) with contact cleaner working back and forth by hand a few times. 3. Check there is light emitted from laser (some models of phone or DSLR camera can help with this). Hope this is of some help.

There is a white/grey switch that is "moved" by the gearing mechanism (I think it's under the belt you can see it at the center at 10:39). That switch probably detects whether the cd is fully clamped down. I would check that switch with a multimeter to make sure that it's reading correctly when "closed" and "open". Maybe see if it has any adjustments or has too much play.

The tray is not sensing that the disc is in it. As it goes in it pauses, then opens out again. It may be a sensor that's not seeing the tray and disc are all the way in, ready to start playing. Mechanically the tray and disc are not aligned somehow, and the player won't start playing. Or a sensor is dirty or bad not seeing the disc is ready to play. These are some guesses. Good luck on your quest!

My CDP-690 has this same issue. It was the belt. The belt did not have enough tension to close the tray all the way. When the tray closes all the way, it pushed on a switch that lifts the CD up. I think his tray will close, but the belt slips when it hits the switch that indicates the tray is fully closed.

I have a Teac CD deck made in 2010 a neighbor in my building tossed. I didn't think it worked, it would load but not play. Seeing your previous video about your Sony deck got me to open the Teac, the CD transport looks exactly like your Sony's. I realized it wasn't playing because the play button had to be pressed after the transport loaded and read the disc. My other players just start playing after loading. So thanks for getting me to check this one I almost threw out without checking. From what I saw in my player the CD should start to spin immediately which yours doesn't seem to do.

Thank you for a great video. I just got a thought, maybe a drop of oil to the shaft of the spindlemotor would help. Try then to rotate it manually, it might be stuck. Be careful only a drop of oil is enough. I wish you good luck. I hope this is helpful. Have a wonderful day.

Glad you are persevering wirh this player, especially if it has a different DAC to normal. If all else fails, do you know of a service/ restoration shop/ business in your area? Guess it depends on your desire to get it going, not to mention the economics aspect. Good luck.

On some of these mechanisms there are sensors that check the drawer has closed properly. If these aren’t working the disc is rejected, I saw this on another RU-vid repair video. Often just little connectors that become oxidised and need cleaning (bit like battery terminals).

There seems to be an "end position" switch for the cd tray thats not always engaging. So the CD player isn't sure if the CD was loaded successfully or if the tray got stuck and ejects it again. Also the spindle tray on which the CD sits might have moved, so the CD doesn't have the right distance to the laser and it has a hard time focusing. Try moving that spindle tray, coming from the motor below up or down carefully. That thing is just friction fit onto the motor spindle.
@kevinh96
@kevinh96 3 года назад
Can you get a look into the mechanism from the side, to check that the spindle clamp assembly is clamping the disc properly?. If it cannot press the disc between the upper and lower assembly it wont spin up. Also do you have any means of applying power to the spindle motor?. If so it might be worth removing it and then applying external power to it to make sure the motor spins. If it doesn't it may be that the spindle motor has seized and could simply require oiling (you CAN use 3 in 1 oil for that). Try turning the spindle motor shaft by hand to see if it spins freely or is jammed up with old oil. Most of the time you don't need to disassemble the entire motor, you remove the pulley and put a drop or two of oil where the shaft meets the motor assembly then spin it by hand for a few minutes to work it in. Some motors also have holes to allow oil to be dripped in but many do not. You only need to fully disassemble one of those motors if the old oil is really, really gummed up and even new oil cannot free it up. Might also be worth checking for voltage on the wires to the spindle motor itself, to make sure it is getting power in the first place.

So much harder to repair than older analog music technology (which would probably still be working!). If someone sent this to me, I'd say "hang on a second while I go get an oscilloscope and a 4 year degree in electrical engineering..." But a couple of things you might try (1) CD tracks begin at the center and the laser I believe moves on a screw drive, I would try to manually move it out a few turns to give the mechanism a chance to move the laser and make sure that center detection switch is flipped. (2) Manually spin the CD motor in case it has a "bad spot" - maybe give it a spin and then plug it in. (3) A couple of quick plug/unplugs in rapid succession to maybe jolt those capacitors and electronics....

This is the problem with that particular machine: Many old CD players have motors with worn-out bearings. The fact that it works when put on a 45 degree angle shows that it's probably the problem. The angled position makes it easier to for the motor to spin cause you take some of the weight off the bearings. It's probably not the laser on this machine. The solution is a new motor, but that would really involve a lot of work. Good luck.

Nailed it. When the player works held up at an angle that's usually it.
@macrodriguez5697
@macrodriguez5697 3 года назад
As you say it could be many things, worn out lenses, motors etc. You say it spins if you move it in angle. Maybe is a contact switch. Depending of the type of mechanism, when the tray loads it must move a contact switch which indicates the system the disc is loaded. To be honest lasers from this era must be inoperable by now. If this is the case you can get it from AliExpress maybe, but it will not cost $6 😉

Use that pot you mentioned to tweak up the laser intensity a tiny bit at a time, testing to see if will read the disc after each time you increase
@Madness832

IMO, it looks like the laser sled isn't even movin'. I don't even see the lens movin' up & down, while it tries to focus (to determine if a disc is loaded).
@bobwigg761
@bobwigg761 3 года назад
I don’t think it has anything to do with belts, laser, or lubrication. I noticed when you had inserted the disc and pushed the drawer in, the display indicated “No Disc Found” just before reopening the drawer. This tells me that the sensor that detects if the disc is physically present (nothing to do with the data on it) is at fault. It (the sensor) could be physically loose, misaligned, or the data cable it is connected to is loose and not making a solid connection, since the machine seemed to work when you tilted it.

Hey there that honestly appears to be the contact switches remember the unit uses logic circuits. There is a switch that signals the micro controller the the disc tray is to the open and closed positions it appears the tray switch is working properly however the close position may not be signaling that the tray is fully closed that would explain why it opens back up. The motor is turned off when the switch signals the controller in other words the microcontroller doesn't get the signal the tray is fully closed thus it opens again also keep in mind the weight of the CD adds weight (laser assembly tilts up upon closing so if the belt does slip it still wouldn't trigger the closed position. You can also used your cell phone camera to detect if the laser is turning on. CD lasers are EXTREMELY close to infrared light hence the warning of invisible laser radiation present. That definitely appears to be a failure of detection the tray isn't 1. Fully closing with a CD inserted or 2. The switch isn't signaling the microprocessor it is fully closed. BTW some units will do that when the tray is opened to (immediately close) that would be a dirty switch. That switch is the only way the controller knows it has reached the end of the open cycle, as mentioned earlier there is another switch for the signal the tray is in the fully closed position as well. I know this is long LOL hopefully you can verify the signaling switches are clean, electrical contact cleaner will clean them quickly and easily spray a tiny amount on the contacts and quickly work the switches by hand using a jewelry screw driver. Hopefully they can easily be reached. Watch the mechanism and notice on the underside usually there is a part that shifts left and right piece touches that switch(es) sometimes the switch will be a two position switch it will have two firm outer strips and a longer flexible one in the middle. This shifts one contact to the other depending on tray open/ close position. Think of it like a see saw LOL Hopefully you'll be able to verify the switch contacts aren't the problem. The pickup worked a little bit that can be dust inside the interior of the laser assembly camera grade canned air can help remove dust inside it. The plastic part around the lense can be GENTLELY removed to grant access to the internals of the laser pickup assembly (definitely a last resort) a hint to determine dust is use a bright light and a super high power magnifying glass. You should be able to see if it is cloudy looking. It should be crystal clear not like a window that was wiped with an oily towel. I'm sure you'll make more videos concerning the unit. I look forward to watching 😃😄👍

Yes tray open/close micro switch is worth investigating. I would just spray contact cleaner into it then work it back and forward manually a few times. That should be enough to ensure it is working. They rarely fail so...

I’m not a techie, but common sense dictates that you need to replace the belt. A stretched belt simply won’t work as well as a round belt would. This may not be the whole problem (it’s more likely a technical problem with the mechanism), but it certainly would be a good start.

White lithium grease contains petroleum which will eventually hurt the plastic and/or the belts. Info on the interwebz advises using silicon gel instead. Helpful video though. Glad I'm not the only DYI'er that encounters Sony's that are nonresponsive to cleaning the lens and cleaning any gunk. Sometimes, gotta troubleshoot deeper. Better yet, use this .... Ok, so, first off, it's nothing mechanical. The belt could do with a replacement (it looked a little loose for my liking 🙃) but I'm 99.9% sure it's electronic. I saw something similar and it was the computer. Check all the contacts (ribbon cables, capacitors, etc.). Although, I'd honestly chuck it in the bin and find a working one on ebay. It's not worth going crazy over. Anyway, great video, my friend. Take care!!!

@@xaenon From what I've seen with players, they won't attempt to spin, unless they can determine there's a readable CD inserted. Could be something like the laser has gone low emission. Maybe worth tweaking the laser power trimmer? Audio CD players will usually eject discs they can't read, like if a DVD was inserted instead of a CD.

These are made of quite a bit of cheap plastic. Just a steel box 📦, with a lot of empty space inside. These CD 💿 players are built to be disposable. I've had a great 👍 many 👨 of these apart in my time. The CD 💿 player's "eye", has two strong 💪 silver magnets underneath it. Underneath the cheap plastic chassis, consists of a drive 🚗 motor (turns the CD 💿), and a servomotor (allows all other functions of the CD 💿 player). Ya can always re-purpose this CD 💿 player, by taking it apart for the motors, to use in something else, or a build project. 99 percent of times, the motors in these aren't bad 👎. Although built out of a lot of plastic, earlier 👂 CD 💿 player (such as 1988), used a train 🚆 of gears ⚙ (might have still been a belt). As CD 💿 players evolved through the years, manufacturers 👨 cheaped out, and went to very few gears ⚙, and went to belts, especially ones that turn to mush. I will try to inform ya on the repair of this CD 💿 player, by tomorrow. Just got off work, and pretty tired (don't yet tear out the magnets). LOL 😆!! Your friend, Jeff.

A further bit of advice. Don't spill your coffee over the circuit board...
@jeffreyhickman3871
@jeffreyhickman3871 3 года назад
This could have a hairline 💇 crack in the circuit board, or possibly a cracked solder connection, not 👎 letting the "close" feature of the CD 💿 drawer to work properly. It's like 👍 the "close" button can't "talk" to the other end of the circuit, keeping 👌 the CD 💿 drawer closed. What you're experiencing is probably an "error", or "default" message. It could even be a bad 👎, or failing capacitor. I, frankly, think this CD 💿 player is probably junk. I hate to say it. "Junk" just might be the 4 letter word that ya might want me to stay away from. Last ditch thought, some soldering mistake may have happened at the factory 🏭, which ya probably won't see 👀 with the naked human eye. I wouldn't see 👀 it, either. If I were you, I'd probably tear this machine apart for the magnets, and the motors. Ya can probably use some gears ⚙ in your parts bin, too. I'd be afraid 😨 of the belts turning into mush, if saved. I'd refrain from buying one of these on eBay, due to their astronomical pricing, or shipping and handling costs. Some things are fine, but I'd be careful. Your friend, Jeff.
