Hi, in this video I attempt to fix items sent into my PO Box by viewers of the channel. In this video I look at 4 different items.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Female here. I've started fixing things around the house because of watching you and a few other RU-vidrs. A few weeks ago, I fixed a cheap toaster. It was really interesting. LOL Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Vince, my friend works as a technician at Apple in Cupertino and he told me that they have watched a lot of your fixing MacBook videos in the labs there and they get a real kick out of them. Tim Cook even came down and watched a few with them! I know people won’t believe this but I promise you it is true. They think you are wonderful and you have a standing invitation for a personal tour of the “Spaceship”and the labs if you ever find your way to California. Family included. 🍻🍻🍻

I started watching your videos and started working my way backwards through the older ones. Honestly, I skipped the RR ones because I'm not really interested in car stuff but I think you talked me into at least checking out one. I know it's not really "car" stuff like you're working on the engine or something. Just didn't think I'd enjoy them but maybe I will!

I was never a fan of those plastic ribbon style connectors on displays. I've seen one with a zebra strip and it had it's own chamber that the strip sat in and then the board went over it and it's screwed down and there is a solid connection from the board to the display.

Hi Vince the motor head on the satelite dish rotator you worked on is almost identical to the rotator we worked on that swivels an array of solar panels, they keep the panels facing the sun. The timer controller nudges the motor so many degrees every 30mins then resets to the start position at dusk.

There are heat plates you can get for soldering without using air or an iron. You may find them useful for things like airtags where the components are difficult to replace without disturbing others.

Was reading an interesting article recently about the discovery that copper wire has been seen to convey water molecules under certain circumstances. Incredible thing, its like the electrons pump water molecules along the strands, then stop, the water corrodes and the process restarts again further along hence why copper strand wire turns black over time.

Some feed back .. coming from an electronic engineering career, your channel is obedient of my top 3 entertaining and informative and funny. But you mention the RR videos not doing well, for me and I guess most of your viewers car fixing is interesting but there are so many channels out there doing that you are up against some slick content. Also, can’t relate to a RR, yes it quality engineering but it’s a RR and your target audience for RR fixing is very small. Concentrate on house hold fixing, more relatable to your target audience and you are excellent at it. Keep it up and merry Christmas Vince

Off topic on the fix but something about thermostats. There's a thing that many thermostats have called "Swing" or "Deadband". Not sure about that one in the video, but if it doesn't have it, I'd have tossed it in the trash. Lack of swing is infuriating. From "Lux" (I have a Lux) WHAT IS SWING, AND HOW DO I SET IT? A thermostat works by turning your heating or cooling system on and off whenever the room temperature varies a certain number of degrees from the set-point. This variation is called “swing.” We recommend setting #1 which provides maximum comfort. This is also the default value that the thermostat already has in it when it is shipped. Setting it to a wider value will result in less frequent cycles, and may save energy. I have oil heat with an oil burner. I put in a Honeywell in the summer. As the weather got colder, the oil heat would come on occasionally. More and more as it got towards winter. When completely in winter, is when I first noticed. Every 10 minutes at night in the winter. It was on for 10, off for a minute or so, on for 10, off for a minute or so..... Once you become aware of that, you can't, not notice. I was afraid the burner was going to burn out from the cycling. Think of it like a car coasting without your foot on the pedal. Obviously Honeywell is a huge name in thermostats and people buy them all the time, but I couldn't take it. I put the Lux in and the change in burner operation was instantaneous. I wasn't concerned about energy savings, I was concerned about the burner and my sanity. It took me days of looking online to figure out that I wanted swing. Didn't know the word and had to search by the symptoms.

Satellite actuator the one you have there are two eras thats why the gear is different also would like to add some info when you manage to move it fully to the west and to the east will automatically stop as there are micro switches around the main actuator and there are three in total two must be made for it to move secondly when you moved the worm wheel for tha actuator by hand now the actuator lost the center point zero position you need to reset again ( pressing left and right button same time for 10 seconds) otherwise no satellite position can be stored, in your case the limit has not been set per your video the limit is to stop the dish hitting the wall or obstacles therefore need to be reset when connected to the satellite receiver. The interesting thing which i find is how the unit module between the movement or to pass signal from the LNB in the old days we use 4 wires ? Merry christmas

Watch Alex at Northridgefix micro-solder. He uses a very short-tip iron and supports his hands/forearms on a surface when he's working to reduce hand movement. I used to work with a tv engineer (in the days of CRTs) who had tremors due to Parkinson's disease and he still soldered fine so it's possible to work around having shaky hands! In addition, the satellite controllers counted rotations off the actuators to know how the dish had moved after initial setup.
