Can I Get Good At Darts Left Handed? 

I think a good tip is to just use your left hand in day to day life more. Like, brush your teeth left handed, chop with the knife left handed, hold your mug of tea(beer) left handed, just little things like that will train your psyche and muscle memory overall

I feel this. I remember hitting 180’s for fun as a teenager and thinking I’d be good enough to be a pro, after a few years I noticed I was slowing down a lot couldn’t throw fast like I used to, felt like I was getting worse and worse for years and the more I thought about it the worse my throw seemed to get, dartitis is a struggle. Daniel from Straight to the Point youtube page used to be a right handed thrower. He now plays left handed perfectly. He's done a video how he done it. Maybe check it out 🤷‍♂️

My advice, from someone who's had very similar experience, including the yips at a young age. Is to go back to the right hand. Redefine what "good is" the feel of the dart and arm is more important than what you're hitting. If you're trying to get your game back. Darts is a unique sport, you can throw a bad dart and hit a decent score ect. Let go of the outcome. Also, I've been watching your page for a few years, when you " practice" you typically just go for the treble 20. You need a consistent practice routine. That you religiously stick to. No wasted darts. I know where you're at. There are other physical factors as well. Soft tissue damage following years of overthrowing and snatching ect, that can all be improved upon. I'm a physical therapist, I've been playing darts for 16 years. I really can help from that perspective. I'd love to have a video call with you Jack, and over some advice. Cheers.

Think this is up there with your best ever videos.. So much relatable content: Your right handed throw similar to mine, dart points towards 12 when drawing back. You were once good/capable of throwing 65 and now around 50-55. You don't enjoy playing badly (who would? But we all love darts). I also wish I could forget everything I know about throwing a dart and starting again 😢 I wish I could change my mentality to simply enjoying playing darts rather than wanting to play well and winning every match

I had to swap arms back in August and took me about 5-6 weeks to get my first 180 so enjoy your journey, anything is possible

Great video, I feel this resonates with a lot of amateur darts players myself included, I have given myself 12 more months to try and develop my game with my right before starting a fresh with my left

Proper interesting video this, Jack. Hopefully you stick with it because I can see it working out well. Even in that short time throwing with your left you can tell the release is way smoother, without the slight jerk of the wrist to the side when you were throwing right handed.

hi jack, ive been a subscriber for perhaps 2 or 3 years and love your channel. ive been playing darts since i was 12 yrs old, obviously with a few gaps over the years. in my 30's i got serious into darts and attained county level in ireland. at my best i was probably 75-80 ave hitting 7-10 180s on a daily basis. ive never had a 9 or a 10 darter and only ever managed 1 ever in my life 11 darter, ( 140,140, 140, 81 out) ive had perhaps 7 or 8 12s, and countless 13 plus games. i promoted professionals in ireland and organised /mc'd exhibitions with pros in the 90s. i dont play much anymore im 60 yrs old but i have had struggles getting back to form after dartitis and long layoffs. ive found the way back.... it works for me and perhaps it will work for you (left or right handed) its so simple it beggers belief but for me it works. i dont really know if it will work for you or anyone else but im happy to share it with you and for you to share with your followers. funny thing is before you started banging on about changing to a lefty i never really thought much about it, then i thought to myself hang on try this first. so heres the thing, ill be tuning into the stream next wednesday eve as i often do so ill msg you my ( very simple) technique, and im hoping it works for you. give it a go. all the best from Ireland jack, love the channel regards Tim

Good luck mate! I feel like your left handed throw has a lot of potential. I've always been cross-dominant, so I would write right handed but everything else left handed (even writing on an iPad or something). Got dartitis years ago so I had to switch to throwing darts right handed, and although I am decent right now, my biggest problem was maintaining a steady throw. I played comps with at least 15 totally different styles lol. But it's definitely doable.

Hey Jack nice you have joined the lefty squad! (I am left). I got some tips: when you go to a double in a match always try to go for tops not for double 16. For a left player it’s harder to throw at double 16. Double six is easier for left players. I like this concept for videos! Wish you the luck to get better with left 👍

Been through the same thing as you mate. Had to play left handed for a year because of dartitis. But 1 day just managed to be able to throw right again and better than I could previously. Really is all in the head sometimes. Hope the averages start picking up for you soon

Welcome to the club. I can get down to a finish in about 20 some darts but then to double out when I usually finish Ive thrown over 40 darts sometimes. I use my right arm to throw darts. Have you had any experts help you on your form for throwing darts. Maybe that’s what you need to improve on your dart skills.

I'm new to darts (got a dart board last weekend) You need a break and playing left handed is kind of having a break, but also not having a break. 6 months down the line you might take a punt at right again and it be brand new and fresh. This is the 2nd video I've seen of yours, the first being a one for improving your game with doubles games from 2 years ago and you were nailing it. I'm sorry to hear that you're having so much trouble with your game. But for me personally it's good to hear that there are dart players fighting the same battle. My story is pretty similar in that I averaged in the high 60's to mid 70's. Somehow I completely screwed up my throw, averaging about 50 for the last year. Now I am working so hard on the technical side of my throw and finaly making small progress in my game again.

Must be real hard to not enjoy it anymore like you did! All the best !

Your left handed throw is very smooth mate

I developed dartitis late last year, went from a 70s average and climbing, fast paced throw to not being able to let go of a dart. I found changing from my usual longer barrels (54mm) to shorter (sub 50mm) and using two different coloured flights. Instead of focusing on throwing the darts I now focus on throwing in colour sequence eg blue red blue and have found it has helped massively with my action. Also I had to remember to just have fun! Hope this helps someone in some way 🎯

I hope this helps you find enjoyment throwing again. I have gone through similar in the last couple years, I wish I had answers but I just can’t seem to help myself either. I definitely can’t switch to left hand due to a shoulder issue.

I've only figured out im left eye dominant after throwing darts for over 10 years with my right hand from my right cheek. Im now trying a more Taylor like throw but im struggling alot. Maybe Ill try left handed too! Im looking forward to seeing your progress.

I am excited to see how this works out for you. I don't know if 1 month is a fair shake at it though. I've been shooting for about 12 years right handed but tore my labrum in my right shoulder and my skill was significantly dropped and I have surgery and a long road to recovery ahead so I just decided to throw lefty too. This is definitely worth a go and I'm interested in your progress. This is because I've been doing the exact same thing. This is because of suffering with tennis elbow in my left elbow and my averages before were in the 75-80 but now it's below 60, which is so frustrating my elbow wants to bring my arm back when I throw in a different position. I did manage to get a bit consistent with my right hand and managed a 180 out of nowhere. I threw with my left hand then the next throw with my right hand and the repeat. I found that worked. Hope throwing left handed works for you.

Will be interesting to see how it goes. You definitely look a bit smoother left handed. As you're 'starting again' it'll be interesting to see if you fiddle with your set up as well. The darts always need to suit the throw and your action is already quite different from what i see.

Great video maybe you could investigate which barrel shape fits your left hand better, then figure out which weight your left hand works with, then you can determine flight shape, shaft length(I am still working on not laughing at this), finish it off with tip or point length. You might be surprised as to what dart your left hand loves. And maybe the dart referee 4, maybe the end result. I also believe a lot of people will benefit from your lessons learned, in each area. Been watching for a good few years now (since the expose on the loot box) but even now your right hand throwing has changed so much. Completely different grip and follow through. Fair play for trying something different.

So funny watching this video. I already try bring randomness in to my training routine to build adaptability decided to do some left(opposite)hand training sessions. I really rally bad left handed.

I just put kite flights on my darts and they seem to go so much straighter, think I have cracked the setup for the way I throw, just need to put a longer point in to balance the weight out a bit more and should be perfect.

I'm naturally right-handed for most other things. When I very first began throwing darts, sat on the floor in front of the board propped against a dining room chair aged about 3, for whatever reason I settled on playing left-handed. I played that way for probably 10 years up to and including playing for Dorset County youth, but eventually I got such bad joint pain in my left elbow I had to switch to right-handed. It took me a while to adjust and I had a lot of frustrating moments wondering why I was bothering, but eventually I got there to the point that changing back to left-handed then felt alien. It can definitely be done, you just need to manage your expectations and understand that you'll hit plateaus in your progress and not to get deflated by that. Good luck with it!

Jack, as much as i dont think ive had dartitis, my throw has got worse over the years! i managed to cut my right index finer the the top knuckle so deep that it cut nerves, so i now cant feel the tip of that index finder properly, which screwed my throw comopletely...ive done 50 different sets of darts and have found a dart im settled with again now as when i release i use the pinch between the finger and thumb to let go if that makes sense!? good luck buddy

Wow, mad respect for trying. I am a left-handed player and I feel your struggle. 2 weeks ago I found my self a way to do a solid pull back and throw. I bring my dart to my eyebrow and just throw. Maybe its a solution for your right hand?

I’ve been playing on and off for about 2 years and more recently and I can hit the treble 20 decently but I have a stray dart every 2-4 darts that’s just nowhere near or the wall, I have good accuracy but not consisteny, anyone know what that’s down to?

I think it’s definitely a good idea. Trying something fresh such as changing your throwing hand could be the tool you need to hit new heights in your darts game. Focus on maintaining a steady rhythm when throwing and just work on the fundamentals. Only way is up mate ☝️💯🎯💪

You did a great job of describing everything that's been happening with your game. It feels like I'm going the same path sometimes because I try too many things and mess my throw up.... I might throw 3 legs off hand per practice and see what happens. If the tip limit was 1, mine would be- Always look exactly where you want it to land, when your eyes are locked in, it can block out everything. Even your own brain thats trying to sabotage your pending victory😂 Good luck

As an archer I exactly understand Your pain. I shoot for nearly 2 decades. After shooting for a couple of years I became one of the best traditional archer around. Then something happened and I just stopped scoring well. Target panic crept in in 2018 and I was done. Now I'm merely a shadow of myself. I started shooting left handed too. It helped a bit. But I also struggle with worsening eyesight. So I'm now average and started training others :).

have been playing with my other arm for a year now. because I got darttitus 2 years ago and was never able to throw with my good arm again. it just takes a lot of practice and learning everything again. and then it gets better and better. 

I've just started playing darts past week or so. Anyone got any advice on how i can improve accuracy. Plus does the dart particularly matter much? I currently use a set of KOTO darts unknown on the weight that i got as a set with the board. Should i invest in better darts or just work on my throws first? Cheers.

I'm actually considering this even though I'm stiff right handed. I've overcome dartitis but my throw has become so forced that I never feel like I am in control of the dart anymore. It feels like my throw is just "broken" in a way. I like your left handed throw - it's a bit like a fast Mickey Mansell.

How come you turned the board round

For reasons I won't get into now, I had to give up playing darts Right Handed almost 4 years ago to the day. Started throwing again a couple years later, this time Lefty. I think I'm about as good as before, skill wise, but mentally I'm 100% better. Why? Because now I play without any pressure or expectation. Also, my practice is much more focused. Stay with it, but don't expect quick, lasting improvement. Takes time but you can do it!

I was gonna do left handed I done it for a week and I thought I can’t do this anymore because I love playing and was missing playing local league and stuff 😂 at least I know if all else fails I can go back to left. I felt like you mate where whatever mistake your trying to fix right handed it’s not working and it makes you play worse and a very shit feeling…. Hope you can overcome it even if it is left. At least I know if I ever had a problem with my right I got a decent action left to change to. I will be following to see your progress. Use a cheat code and throw 6 - 9 darts at a time at different targets in groups of 3 or just follow, follow, follow. Less walking and you can really work on muscle memory. At least a couple times a week I do this. Just letting my arm go at a number over and over again. Walking it in on the first dart or two and then just following as long as i can. We train this way in every sport, just not darts for some reason.

I'm considering doing this as I'm left eye dominant and throw with my right hand it's annoying as it Bends your arm 😂

I've been looking for a video like this for years😂 I'm right handed but left footed! If I throw with my left hand I'm no good but my stance, grip etc feels absolutely perfect. Throwing with my right hand never felt natural. If I could develop to left hand throw I'd be really good. Anyone any advice?

An important thing about your game is enjoyment, if throwing with your right hand is doing your head in, with your left the enjoyment may come back making you progress faster.

i think you could do it you seem very coordinated with your left hand and if you are left eye dominent it shouldnt be an issue . i know several people who switch sides with shooting a shotgun. its pretty common in shotgunning

Left handed darts could be a way to have fun again, and learn darts over again and potentially get as dominant at darts with your left as you were with your right. Its gonna be good to watch! Shame you cant play with your right hand but i might say, maybe change your darts, try heavier/lighter darts and different shaped barrels to see if you can maybe get a new throw with a different set of darts and use your dominant hand again? that could work maybe. we all have different throws, you got used to one throw and a set of darts you could easily get a new throw with a whole different set of darts i think.

I have the same issue with being right handed and my left eye being dominant and my right eye is rubbish. I find if I throw with my right eye closed I throw better darts.

You are speaking from the bottom of my heart - it is so frustrating if you put a lot of effort in something and cant get any better. I started with a mate of mine about 4-5 years ago - he is playing constant 75+ (with crazy things happening like hitting BO11 85+ games) since a year or so - and I try to play 2 hours on average a day and cant get past 50 constantly. And then you are slowly losing the joy of playing

Ok. So here is an idea…. I just went a week and a half without playing darts and I was starting to get worse. After the break, I both enjoyed and threw better. Like, a lot better. If I remember correctly, Luke Littler just said he hadn’t thrown a dart since the Worlds, until half an hour or so before Bahrain. Might be worth a shot!? When was the last time you took a break from darts? And about how long was it? Good luck mate!

Switch to the 19s. You seem to be missing low a lot, if you continue to miss low on the 19, you're at least hitting the fat part of the pie. A shoulder injury can also prevent a person from being consistent at the top of the board. In your line of work, I wouldn't be surprised if you have a nagging old injury that you may not even notice in your day to day life, but your body is compensating for it somehow while you're on the oche. One person's throw you could try to emulate is RVB, calm cool collected, not trying to throw it through the board...

Guess that the most important thing will be to don’t make any goals, only enjoying the game. Because you got the knowledge, it might be frustated sometimes. Just enjoy the game

I have played darts for 15 years or so and I never seem to get any better or more consistent. I am right handed and I throw right handed, but I play pool left handed... I think I might try your left handed challenge for a month and see how it goes.. it has never occurred to me to throw left handed! Lol, who knows? I might wake up tomorrow and throw like a pro :D

I’m sure everyone wants to help. I’m no different. Tip. The eye thing. Pick up your chin helps use the lower part of your eye and raises your hand position up. Secondly when you release your dart don’t drop your hand. Stop it as close to pointing at your target as you can. Shorter the stroke the more consistent it will be. Ash does what you do but the difference is your movement is very different shot to shot. Ash’s stroke is the same over and over. Ps you’ll be fine.

I've played darts off and on since I was 13 I'm 38 now, played superleague for 5 years was ok highest average of just under 28 per dart but normally around the 25 mark, I have always been terrible in practice really struggle but soon as I have around 6 pints they go straight but I had to put the practice in for them to go well after a drink, i don't play for any local sides or nothing now just playing the house after a drink 😂

I’ve switched to left handed since March 2023 - all down to Dartitis.
