Parts are still available but some of the quality is questionable if modern made, I will be after a carb rebuild kit next so will see how easy it is to find!

its not designed for ease of access for working on is it......does sound like shite fuel or possibly rust in the fuel filter or clogging in the carb - all problems with any vehicle that isn't used much - but i have no doubt with your know how all will be fixed soon....do these beasts run on modern fuel - i'm not going to grace it with the term petrol
I drove it a little on D Day last month and felt carb related but before looking at the fuel system ( currently uses a petrol can as it's tank )I checked the ignition system which also had issues, no point sorting the fuel if you can't fire it! As for fuel..... these engines were designed before leaded petrol and I believe have valve seat inserts. We are using super unleaded for now. As of today the carb is off and a rebuild kit has been ordered and on it's way.
Are you absolutely sure the points gap is 20 thou Adi? I've fitted literally hundreds of sets of points in Lucas distributors, 4, 6 and 8 cylinders even a 12 cylinder one, as a mobile mechanic for 25 years, and never have I come across a points gap other than 15 thou. The general gaps for spark plugs on90% of British engines with Lucas electrical systems was 25 thou and 15 thou for the points. I could be wrong of course and the war department specified a 20 thou gap.. I've not watched the rest of the vid yet but when I was listening to the engine missing in the last video I detected the timing was a bit out. That's why it wouldn't tick over. It needed advancing on the Bob weights. So I think it's too far retarded. Also I know it's more expense but I would change out the coil as well. You don't know how old it is unless there is a date marked on it as changed and that can give erratic running as well. Going to watch the rest now! I've watched it now and it's running quite sweetly, what seemed to be timing was clearly the thing was struggling to run on more than three or four cylinders. I'd still check that the points gap is as you say 20 thou, other than that it sounds good. The engine clearly has done no great mileage. And is sound as a pound as the saying goes. I think the carb could do with a strip, that flooding was a bit disconcerting, but once it started there were no more leaks.
I'm glad you mentioned the points gap.... my first thoughts were around 15 thou thinking back to the 90's when drag racing a 3 litre "Essex" V6 ... but thought I would do a quick Google search as the 90's was a while back and searching on my phone is never good but a quick search and 20 thou was mentioned... which did make me wonder if a MOD thing.... 🤷♂️ Anyway I think I will reduce it to 15 from its tight 20 thou and see if she is happier.... however because she did have a good idle I will strip and sort the carb first and go from there. Apart from these minor issues it does seem a good engine 👍
