Someone scratched up this copy of Duck Tales on NES and it hurts my feelings. I'll do what I can to get this game working again.

You should invest in some copper wick to help desoldering along with liquid flux to help keep the solder balled up.

When you are soldering the pins, you really want to use flux so that the solder immediately attracts to the metal. I have a couple flux pens lying around that make it trivially easy to do. When you are done clean up the residue with IPA.

If this is flux core solder, the freshly melted solder may have enough flux to wet onto metal until the flux burns off on the iron. In some cases, adding extra flux still helps.

I'm going to share my recent open cart surgery. Recently I purchased a couple of games from my upstairs neighbor's boyfriend for $20. Arcana and Super Wrestlemania which had been in storage for as long as he could remember. Arcana cleaned up fine and worked pretty good. Super Wrestlemania had some serious water damage, but the board seemed to be intact. I cleaned it up and it didn't work. I grabbed my multimeter, soldering iron, flux pen, and solder. There were places where there wasn't any solder so while I was reflowing I was also adding new solder to these areas. I double checked everything with the multimeter and I was pretty satisfied. I handed it off to my brother and he popped it in and it worked like it was brand new. The cartridge was still dirty and scuffed, but for being my first cartridge I actually repaired I was satisfied.

I'm hearing the DuckTales Moon Theme in my head. One of the best pieces of music in a video game ever. The version in the remastered game is amazing too and it was used as both a lullaby and an action sequence in the cartoon reboot. Great job getting it working again.

YAY! Dude, that was just cool. I have been reluctantly holding off on soldering. I’ve seen Perifractic of Retro Recipes do it, The 8-Bit Guy, many others, and I finally caved in and bought a decent little soldering station. I still need one of those desoldering guns because that’s the way to go. But I have wick here for now. I have 6 Atari 2600s I want to attempt saving. They all probably need new caps, so, wish me luck. I’m going to begin on that soon, but I’m probably not going to do a video for that… I’m a comedy video game channel, not a “watching me give myself burn blisters channel” 😂. Thanks for the cool video.

So I have a few NES games that I've tried playing in a Hyperkin NES clone console. I cleaned all the carts but I still cant get them to work consistently. Sometimes I get a black screen, sometimes a distorted screen, sometimes a normal screen. Any idea what to do next? I used isopropyl alcohol, jewelry polishing rag and finally brasso to clean the contacts. They shine like new but very inconsistent when it comes to loading on the Hyperkin. Thanks.

Weird hypothesis re: chip orientation on the boards: It's so you can read the chips if you're holding the board the way you would to put it in a front-loader NES. Don't ask me why you would be inserting the board itself and not the entire cartridge. (I'm not even sure if you can get an NES game to work with just the board; I bet the weird slanted loading system would get cranky if you tried.
@Xx1SailorScoutxX

It's possible; you'd just have to take off the top half of the shell of the console.
