This year, I grew corn in a 20 gallon grow bag for the first time, and it has been amazing. All th18 seeds germinated and my cats ate half, finding them absolutely irresistible. Of the remaining 9, 8 grew to 7 feet and sprouted ears and tassels. A couple have more than one ear, which I did not expect. Thanks for explaining how to know when to harvest. I didn't have a clue!

I planted corn for the 1st time last year. Planted 4 into a half wine barrel. I fed my corn bloodmeal when it was about 18”, then once more when I saw silk. Every stalk had several ears and they were all perfect. I sprayed Neem oil on the silks at the beginning and had no worms. Growing corn is a lot easier than I thought and tastes SO much better than any store bought. 🙂

Yes I did try hand pollination but only one or two stalks even had any "pollen to use. The rain seemed to have washed it away. I may have planted too early because the weather in east Texas stayed very cool way longer than normal. The corn stalks are small and thin and the corn cobbs are not full and some appear to be getting smaller right now. I think I am going to pick all of them and put the stalks in the compost. I think it may have been a number of issues. Not the right temp, too wet and not enough sun.

Putting beans in beside corn helps both. The beans give the corn the nitrogen they need and the corn gives the beans something to climb up. Companion growing.
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna Год назад
That is certainly a great option! It is important for folks to keep in mind that beans won't fulfill all of corn's nitrogen needs. In a container, some type of supplemental food is still necessary for best results.

Now I’m growing in hard clay soils and regenerating the soil with organic matter and proper microbiology - took awhile but I finally have fungus growing in my soil, and keeping the ground covered with a decomposing layer of compost and mulch continues to feed to soil microorganisms.

I am currently growing dwarf corn in a container. This is my first time growing corn and I'm loving watching the it change day by day. Right now it is at the silk stage on one of them. It is so exciting! Thanks for the informative video!

I've done Corn in the soil here in Richmond, VA. Every year, the darn cutworms get to it. I've tried every organic, natural, method to prevent this. Next year I'll try containers, and maybe some netting, to see what happens. Netting and grow bag helped my pumpkins survive the first wave of vine borers. Sadly, by the second wave the vines were just to long to keep covered. But at least I got a couple of pumpkins out of it.

Sorry to hear this, Jacob, that's very frustrating! It seems like containers + netting would be a good solution and I'd be very interested to hear how this goes for you. Squash vine borers got almost all of my pumpkins & winter squash this year as well. I'm searching for viable, natural methods to prevent this next year. I have the same problem as you- once the vines get so big, it's just not practical to keep them covered any longer and the borers inevitably get to them. Best of luck!

My first time planting corn! I couldn’t find mushroom compost. Took your advice and went with the best manure compost I could find. I planted in 3 20 gallon containers. Keeping my fingers crossed! Adele Long Island, NY

Where can u buy compost? This is my first time planting a garden like ever in my life. Lol. So I'm basically beginner status and I've been hesitant to start the sweet corn because I have no clue how to be successful at it. So far I'm doing well with tomatoes cucumbers radishes beets watermelon cantaloupe and strawberry I had one hiccup with clover mites they destroyed my best looking tomatoes and cucumbers but I've got it back under control. But anyway where can I find compost at?

@@elijahisrael86My NY corn is growing proudly along the canal I live on! The boaters are in awe of my 3 25 gallon containers holding 5 stalks a piece standing 6 feet tall! They look beautiful! They’re not exactly ready to eat yet. But I did cheat and pull an ear out…it was good!

Jenna, this is awesome! I’m expanding my crops this year in my raised bed area. I have lots of containers to fill and never thought corn was a possibility. Obviously it is so I’ll give it a shot this year, thanks. I’m in CT so not sure when to start the seeds. You mentioned gurneys…I ordered potatoes and giant kohlrabi from them this year so I’m looking forward to that too. Happy gardening!

I was considering growing some in pots year round indoors under grow lights, doing a few every month so they are continually ready for harvest. I have read you need 25 plants per person for a year and if you can grow them every money, that's 2 to 3 plants per month per person. Since they will have constant water at the base, and I will make sure the pollen gets to the silk, I am hoping to have a nice harvest all year.
