Hi Nelle, this is absolutely amazing, well done and certainly did better than me! (I could only identify 2 or 3 max with my Oticon hearing aids!) I've been following your journey which has been incredible. Keep going with your cochlear 🤗. I'm in the UK, got a yes from the surgeon for my right ear yesterday. Now to wait for the pre-op assessment from Bristol and an op date! (I'm going with Advanced Bionics as they have a link hearing aid for my left ear) ☺️ Here's to a noisy future! 🥳 Be awesome to be able to hear bacon sizzling and all the other sounds I don't pick up! Thank you for always being awesome! I look forward to more of your content as always. 🥳 x

Hi, thank you for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I wish you the best of luck with your cochlear implant. I hope it works as well for you as it has for me. Nelle xx

This was a very difficult test for anyone because the sounds were short bytes out of context.

Hi Nelle, An interesting exercise. However, I think whoever made the source of the sounds should be prosecuted for misrepresentaion. Most of them were rubbish. I think there were only 2 that were clear that you missed. They were the doorbell and the Police or Ambulance siren. My conclusion is that you and your implant did way better than your actual score implied. At my reckoning your score should have been around 80 to 90%. Cheers, Neale (It still seams strange to realise your name is only one letter different from mine. I know it is a knick name, but still strange).

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Some of the sound effects were kind of strange. I don't think anyone would have guessed a waterfall for example. I didn't want to check the sounds beforehand because then I would know what they were so it would kind of defeat the point. This video probably shouldn't be used as a guide for whether or not anyone should get a cochlear implant. It was just a bit of fun to see how well I did. I'm glad you think I did well. Nelle :)

To be fair Nelle, you got more than me! hahahaha. But it did demonstrate to me what it's like for you. Though hearing sounds completely out of context is like something from a quiz show! xx

With my lousy hearing and Phonak Naida P hearing aids, I could pick up sounds that you can't understand with your cochlear implants! Impressive!

Well done! I should probably try this again now I've had longer to get used to my implant. Maybe I'd do better now.

You could retitle your video, "Can anyone identify these sounds?" But the drink being poured was clearly Twining's Breakfast tea with one sugar and a dash of milk. It's unmistakable, very different to PG Tips :)
@nellefindlay
@nellefindlay 2 года назад
Not quite as unmistakable as the sound of a kitchen of course. Also, assuming the tea is being poured from a teapot, it would hopefully be plain tea with no milk or sugar. Unless there are some maniacs with no respect for the natural order of the universe who put milk and sugar in the teapot. Anyway, thank you for your comment. Nelle xx

@@nellefindlay It needed a stream of verbal abuse, to be more recognizable as a kitchen. Heartily agree with the tea making, it would make you question the end of capital punishment.

Hi every body, I'm receiving soonly two CI. Now I have a question: My hearing-nerv should be able to edit frequencies from 20 Hrz up to 25'000 Hrz, but soundprozessors only work between 200Hrz and 8500Hrz, the vocal-range, so a wide range of frequencies are missing. How do you enjoy classical music? Isn't it sounding like the old coal microphone telephones? Thanks so much for your experience!
@nellefindlay
@nellefindlay 9 месяцев назад
Hi, good luck with your cochlear implants. I can hear music a bit, but not super well. It does often sound a little out of tune or like an old radio or telephone. I do still enjoy listening to music even if the sound quality isn't the best. I hope this answers your question.
@sergebalmer
@sergebalmer 9 месяцев назад
@@nellefindlay Thanks so much, music was and is my life. I would like to have a music-programm that covers all the frequencies from 20Hz to 25'000Hz, even cheap Earbuds cover this spectrum.

That cat was obvious even when played through the crappy internal speakers of my monitor. The gradation at the end (the "ow" in "meow") formed by the cat's snut is different to what the baby does. I'm almost deaf in my left ear and I gotta say this makes me wonder if I should get an implant even more than I already do. It proves a lot of sound information is invariably lost.

Hi, there is definitely some reduction in the ability to detect subtle variations in pitch with a cochlear implant. However, for speech clarity, it is much better than what I had with hearing aids, it's a bit of a trade off. Also, this video was made pretty soon after my CI was activated so my ability to recognise sounds is probably better now. It would definitely be worth discussing with an audiologist to discuss whether a CI would be worth pursuing for your specific situation since it is really individual. For me, with hearing aids, I would have barely been able to tell when the sound effect was even playing so compared to that, it's a massive improvement, but for you, that might be different. :)

Hey Nelle, loved the video. I thought it would be fun to try guessing the sounds too, and I got a decent number of them. To be honest, I think this would be difficult for a hearing person as well lol. For example, I'm sure most people would have guessed #1 as birds, but not as a seagull specifically. Does everyone know what a seagull sounds like?!? Anyways, I was wondering when you got your CIs? Your voice sounds quite natural and I am not noticing much of a deaf accent that many others have. I got my first one at 9 months and second at 8 years (American insurance wouldn't pay for 2 at the time). Going to be celebrating the 21st anniversary of my first activation in October!
@nellefindlay
@nellefindlay 2 года назад
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Where I live there are loads of seagulls so I probably should have guessed that one. I only have one implant that I got activated in November 2021 and I wear a hearing aid in my other ear (but it doesn't really do anything, I just do it because my audiologist told me to). Unfortunately in the UK adults are only able to get one implant unless they are deafblind. The reason my speech sounds 'normal' is because I lost my hearing as an adult so I learned to speak with hearing. Congratulations on your activersary in October!

For the record, Nellie, I thought the sound of a person walking with cars going by was somebody riding in a car in the rain with the windscreen wipers on. And I’m not hearing impaired

My mum did tell me that a lot of the sound effects were a bit rubbish and impossible to guess, but checking them beforehand to see which ones were possible to guess would have defeated the purpose. I don't think this test has any scientific merit. Nelle :)

Hi Nelle first off I think you did really well! I have had new hearing aids for a week now so I turned off the captions & tried to guess,I got 3 right! I even managed to stream the sound direct to my hearing aids! I could make out a few of your words & that of your mum! But my brain is struggling to work out what's being said! So you have given me something to think about! Whether I should be refered to the CI implant centre! But this is not about me! But how well you did! I could she how hard you were trying & your right about the hearing aid not helping much! It's only been 3 mths since activation & it could take 6mths to a year to get really good! Your mum said she would not have got many right! But I just hope there is some way you can get your other ear implanted as I am convinced that if you heard as well as you do now then the other ear being implanted would give you really good hearing! But if they won't do the implant then I hope the NHS will give you the latest hearing aid that's out there! Mine is the best they do so if they offer you a Signia stretta UP rechargeable please give it a go you have nothing to lose! I hope your personal life is on the up & you have sorted things out with the dental practice! Your a lovely lady with a bright future! Being deaf should not hold you back & will hopefully open new doors on the job front! You have so much support on here,thank you for sharing your journey with us! And please keep listing things on Amazon that you get a commission on! All the best Barry xx

I've now had my CI for about 6 months, but it was less than that when this video was filmed. I'm profoundly deaf in both ears and have a cochlear implant in my right ear and wear a hearing aid in my left ear (although I can't really hear anything with it). I hope this answers your question.

The main problem I have with identifying noises is where they come from. I thought my dog was crying and I freaked out but my brother said it was just an 18 wheeler’s wheels squeaking . I get angry a lot too because I don’t know where the sounds are from , so frustrating lol And sometimes when I take my hearing aids out I forget I am missing a lot of frequencies and am rattled when I can’t hear the oven beep, I almost called my audiologist because I thought I lost more frequencies until I put my hearing aids back in and was able to hear the oven beep 😬

Hi, thank you for your comment. I can't tell where sounds are coming from either because I only have one implant. I also can't tell people's voices apart very well so when someone calls my name I have to look around to see who it is and where it's coming from. It can be really disorientating and frustrating. I get really frustrated too, especially when there are a lot of people talking at the same time or people not speaking clearly and loudly enough. Nelle xx

Hi nelle's mum before I watch the video it's not been said I don't think whether you left your hearing aid out as there may be a chance of you hearing something with it! My eyes can't focus on the captions at the moment so will watch a bit later on! Your hair & make up do look lovely again Nelle 💖💖

Thank you for your comment. I know some of the sound effects were kind of stupidly hard, but if I checked them before, I guess that would defeat the purpose. I guess even though the sound effects are hard, it still gives a fair idea of what I can and can't hear. Maybe I'll figure out a better way to do it and remake the video. Nelle xx
