Sometimes all you need is a teacher who is genuinely excited about their subject to get people inspired and who wants to push them along! I had a similar thing with coding, failed out of uni because it was crushingly boring, lots of "use this here" and no "this is how it works, why you'd use it and what it does" then picked up a course years later taught by people who really, genuinely found it fun - it was their hobby outside of teaching and they also loved to teach it. Turns out I'm good at it when it's not a lecture hall lol

Yes. It’s a shame, a lot of art teachers just don’t try, and many of them only focus on nurturing the skill of students that are already good at art or have a knack for it, while completely disregarding the rest and giving them a lot of non-tasks to keep busy. I understand that in school, kids take the art class because they think it’s easy, but if teachers actually put in the effort of showing how exciting it can be to start off at zero and finish off with a masterpiece, this attitude wouldn’t be so prevalent. This video showed that there are ways to do that and make it fun.

Yup. My art teachers in college made me want to quit art and seemed to actually encourage that. I figured it was an attempt at motivating by opposition bc that's VERY much how these people were. Literally like "I'll trash you and your art mercilessly in front of your peers, but it will light a fire underneath you and through that you wi- wait...why did he stop showing up to class? He changed to Graphic Design? Well, obviously he didn't have what it takes and I'm still an amazing art professor." Artsy side youtube has made it so much more fun to pick up again.

Same can be said for my gym teacher, "do laps around the track/footbal field at school" no proper technique or instructions, I hated running because of it. In my 40's I started running and eventually became a running coach and teaching people proper running starting from scratch and being able to do 5k run nonstop, a good instructor makes all the difference.

@@thisguyhere44 yeah I had a friend taking art whilst we were both at uni (different unis & different subjects) and she called me the first week of classes in tears because they made her rip up her favourite piece from her portfolio. I get what the object of the lesson is meant to be, but I still think that's a truly awful way to go about it. There are other ways to let students know their work will always be subject to criticism.

Yo I had to pause to see if anybody was talking about that. That was WILDLY better than anything he had drawn so far. By like, SUCH A MARGIN. You can SEE that something must have clicked.

100 hours, is about 3.5 hrs every day, for a single month (30 days). Most people work 8 hrs in a day, and have plenty of time left over, to do other things... including cooking dinner. In the end, its not as much as you think. I used to train Kung Fu... and was doing anywhere between 4 to +8hr every single day... Some of it was "Block Training".. where I would be in a 2hr class... and Or 2 hrs spent training at home in my Attic Dojo. A lot of it was random sporadic training.. all throughout the day and night. For example... I might throw 15 kicks, every 15 minute intervals... for the entire day, no matter where I was, or what I was doing at the time (such as in the backroom at work, hand techs thrown while walking through the malls halls, standing on one leg.. while in line at the bank..etc). This training included hour long "Core" workouts, Iron Body conditioning (Hitting oneself for 1hr), hitting the Sandbags with barefist and barefeet, kicking a Muay Thai heavy bag, speed drills, sparring against various arts artists, and much more. At that pace, and intensity... I became a Masterclass level fighter, somewhere between my 3rd and 4th year. Most marital artists never reach Masterclass level... And... Many rarely are that good / effective, even after more than a Decade of training. But thats what can happen, when you put in 110%, every single day, at what you are passionate about. As far as Drawing goes, I started early on, at like 5 yrs old. I was never doing it at any rushed pace, just casually, whenever I wanted to draw something... and or to express ideas I had within my head. Id never consider myself a Pro. Im more of a Concept Artist, and a "Forced Artist". But Ive made some pretty cool stuff, as a result of my constant efforts... over the many years of my life. I can replicate anything I see, with fair ease (thats actually pretty easy, once you reach a certain level of capabilities). Im well beyond that stage.. as I can draw from my own Imagination.. and have it turn out pretty darn good. It does help that I do have a very Vivid Imagination, and a very Creative mind. But being a good Artist... is more than that. Drawing / Painting / Sculpting... etc... , requires Mechanical Skills, that must be Mastered. Learning Artistic Rules, such as Shading, Texture, Perspectives, Anatomy.. and more... are also required. Anyway... if you want to Succeed, its merely a matter of Investing the Daily Efforts in. Eventually, you will get better.. and better.

100 hours isn't really that long... though I would probably do it when I am on vacation, so I can go through it a bit faster.

@@jackwriter1908 Part of fast and profound developments, comes from Consecutive Efforts... For example... If I ask you to do 100 pushups, and you only do 5 pushups per hour... you will get very different results, than someone whom does 100 pushups all at once, without any resting / breaks. Many tasks are the same, including drawing. Its one thing to draw a face... 5 times Every month... and quite another, to draw 5 faces, within 1 to 2 days. When you allow too much time between each session, you often start to lose memory of certain details. Your physical skills also start to "Dull", from not being used repeatedly / often. And certain things within your Sub-Conscious mind, start to degrade and or fracture. When I was learning and mastering Kung Fu... I didnt wait for time off from work. I would be training after work, every single day. Heck.. I often was doing some of my training, while I Was at work, too. So, if you want to learn to draw, just start doing it. No excuses. Commit to the exercises. Make it a daily part of your life. Only then, will you start to reap the benefits.

Talent is only interest and the will putting time in something.

Talent only really exists insofar as disabilities preventing access and physiological optimisations at the extreme top end. Everything else is about the quality of the coaching, the quality of the training, and the discipline to do it consistently. That 5 year old who can play the violin? That's not some unlocking of an in-built talent, he's been taught how to play since she could control her arms properly. The kid with intense football tricks? Yeah she's had a ball at her feet since she saw a game and went from just constantly messing with a football to getting coaching with the local club, district U16, national U18. Is there a difference between Michael Phelps and the other Olympic level swimmers? Yes, the shape of his body beyond factors under his influence like his shoulder width, his toe and finger webbing etc is more optimal for swimming than his peers. But there's a huge amount of space between "physically capable but doesn't know how" and "literally the single greatest swimmer of all time" that is accessible to pretty much anyone with the time and means.

@@nomore6167 People who had zero training and coaching, have a thing called "passion" and "interest" for the thing they are pursuing and so they have the "motivation" to learn things for themselves through their own failures. The only factor separating them from the other people who had coaching and training is that they are highly, highly motivated and are not dissuaded from failure. Talent is a lie the unmotivated and sorry tell themselves so they can avoid the responsibility of progressing.

You got this! I have been programming for decades now and there are moments when you get into a flow state where the hours just melt away as you build something amazing. Those moments make the aggravation of troubleshooting and trial and error so worth it!

I usually ignore negative responses to things. appreciate the good ones because it's always appreciated when someone random offers to give you some good energy. But always curious about responses like yours. What exactly made you decided to respond in this way. It's not inherently negative but also doesn't register as to why? Is it your own experience or it's something you assumed I didn't know? Are you actually trying to be helpful and this is just your way of doing that? except it doesn't prove him wrong. look at what Hansi drew at the beginning, you can see that there is some underlying talent there. it doesn't matter if you put in 10, 100, thousand or even a million hours if you don't have talent to build off of.

@@FoxDren Talent doesn't even exist. at least not in the sense u think talent is. some kids just see something different and bring that with them when they grow up so it looks like they just talented. in a really simple example, when you learn something new like skateboarding. everything starts to look like a skate park. same thing happens with far more complex things. then you look at them doing things you can't do and its noting more then patterns they recognize and you do not. seeing the patterns that is the hard thing. but even that you can learn.

​@@FoxDrenNot really, it all just comes down to practise, motivation and hand-eye-coordination. I used to draw a lot as a kid and teen, but haven't tried it in over 10 years and have to learn all of the basics again. It's annoying to have all this knowledge in your brain, but having to practise months (if not years) to get close to that. If you ever happen to visit an art course then the teacher will tell you the same and might even show progress pictures of someone just started drawing as adult with zero skill who ended up drawing a realistic object or portrait.

Drawing what you see, is actually just Copying.. not really being "Creative". Its the first step, towards it... as if you do not have the skills to be able to draw at all... you cant create / release anything from your own Imagination. Interesting enough, I saw a guy making videos of him drawing. He didnt draw like a typical artist. He drew sort of like a Mecanical Printer, from left to right... line by line... until he reached the bottom of the page. I criticized him about his methods... and he explained that he "Tried" to learn how to draw properly, and never could figure out how to do it. He clearly had no interest in being Creative, and doing his own thing. He just enjoyed the process of copying things, line by line. It was quite strange.. and very self-limiting.. but its his life, and his time / energy... Anyway... its not Magic. You simply just need to learn the Basics of Art Knowledge Basics, and then put in a boatload of Regular Efforts. Some people have this crazy idea, that you can... for example.. Figure out how to do Kung Fu, without ever stepping into a School.. nor even watching Instructional videos. While technically its not 100% impossible... you are trying to re-invent what took over 2000 years of developments and testing, from many thousands of men, with a possible combined Billion man-hours of efforts. You are never going to compete against all of that, in a single lifetime of your own efforts. Just swallow your pride, and learn from existing sources... and Then, and only then... can you even consider trying to Expand beyond what is already known + mastered. Unfortunately, some people just refuse to want to Learn the Base Foundations. And even when you point out their flaws, DUE to their lack of base knowledge, they refuse to accept any help / criticism, nor will seek out the knowledge to Fix their issues. The thing it, the knowledge is not hard to find, either. We are not in the Dark ages, where access to a Book, was extremely rare, and a privilege.

Creative is not a learned skill, you can not learn to be creative. Maybe you can learn to draw, but if you don't have the ability to see the finished product in your mind, you can't "create" anything.

@@AllenKll While there could be levels, I think creativity is a skill that everyone has. At youth, there was pretend, playing with things, and making up stories. The problem is that people usually grow out of it because school wants facts and rules rather than problem-solving. You really don't need to see the finished product in your mind, hell, aphantasia artist can do this well. All it is just putting all the skills from drawing and being able to understand what is going on and apply it to things. Personally, I had to understand the rules of potraits to make my characters look believeable in perspective, and that helped me with my creativity by understanding what I could add and how I can make certain features stand out.

@@AllenKll - that's patently false, I got aphantasia and I'm pretty creative as an individual, whereas there's plenty of hyperphants that still can't master a basic shape. Creativity is most often based on derivatives and exploration of already loosely existing concepts that you stitch together into its own neat little conceptual quilt, stardew valley didn't get to be where it was in terms of creativity without its creator first looking at harvest moon. It's as much a skillset as empathy and logical reasoning

I'm creative with making rules fit to my personal preferences, but art stuff? not possible. Empathy? 100% not a skill. That's why Psychopathy was named. Because people either have empathy or they don't.

@@watever1234dedoesThanks for the encouragement! I do know I could get better; my issue is that I have other things I'm more committed to, like making and refurbishing things others have made. My drawing is used mostly in pursuit of those things, and is used mostly for me to clarify, just to myself, how to do them. I'm at the 'that's good enough' point with drawing. But you're right: I should try some more! I love how Hansi clearly loves how it made him feel.

Totally agree. Even setting aside the morality of AI images it's just bad for studying anatomy and lighting. It might pass initial inspection (especially to an untrained eye) but there's so many inaccuracies to real life. It's like referencing a science fiction novel to study physics. It might sound plausible but it's not grounded in reality. There's an infinite amount of real life reference out there, why would you ever need to study AI? That said he did an AMAZING job and it inspired me to brush up on my foundations. Just feels like a missed opportunity, this would've been the perfect way to show AI bros that anyone can learn to draw and they don't need to rely on AI to feel creative.

I fully feel you on the immediately wanting to give up if it's even a bit hard thing 😅 Also ADHD and constantly wanting to pick up new hobbies and like 50% of the time it goes rly well and the other 50% i try it once, it's hard, and the stuff just clutters up my house.
