We should not see salvation as a single event, John Coblentz says, but as God’s ongoing work. Focusing on a time when we “made a decision” or “went forward” in response to an invitation or “prayed the sinners prayer” can trouble believers who should have assurance and confidence while giving false assurance to those not walking with Jesus.
John discusses union with Christ and the Spirit as a stamp and a guarantee of our inheritance.

Amen! Such a wonderful truth. The western, especially USA way of looking at personal salvation is so weird. Its like "whats in this for me"? Instead of how do i fit into God's Kingdom? How can i contribute to God's Kingdom? What can i do to help those who need it and show my love for God and his creation?

Regrettably, there is no real definitive or clear understanding of soteriology among Anabaptists in general, and they provide so little assurance for the soul who has once trusted in Christ and actually (if unknowingly) "sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption", because Mennonite teachers across the board deny not only the complete and eternal security of the believer, but also Calvin's "perseverance of the saints", which John surprisingly speaks of in a favorable light in this interview. In either case, and under both concepts, the quickening and cleansing work of the Spirit of God by the water of the word of God is an instantaneous, once-done work that can never be undone (John 13:10), just as Christ bearing the sins of all His sheep was done once, for "by one offering, He has perfected FOREVER them that are sanctified" (Hebrews 10).

In Christ we are always secure. Outside of Christ we are never secure. Your comment seems to indicate that we can only have assurance of salvation, if it is impossible for apostacy to ever occur. Or to put it another way, that we cannot be secure in Christ, unless it is impossible to ever (ultimately) deny Christ. Anabaptists in general would see the many warnings in scripture against departing from Christ, as indicating that apostacy or falling away is an actual danger. Those warnings are not meant to provoke us to fear and paralysis but to pressing on in Christ.

@@AnabaptistPerspectives I do not want to take away from the subjective assurance that you might indeed have by faith in Christ now, even though you evidently believe it were possible for you to end up in hell (perish the thought of such a possibility for one born of God and one of His elect). However, the truth of a perfect and eternal security (objectively) and the assurance of it (subjectively) is incontrovertible in the believing mind when once it dispenses with faithless caveats and fully embraces Romans 8:28-39. Any warning against sin or failure that seems to imply the absence of an objective, permanent security for the born again and sealed believer must be interpreted in light of the highest of truth given here in Romans 8 and in Hebrews 10:10-14, and in many other texts of Scripture.
