Fun quiz! Was such a relief when you got Singapore. Of the ones you missed, Xiamen [SHYAH-men] is geopolitically important-it's a major island/port with a close history to Taiwan, which still controls the adjacent island of Quemoy. Similar geography to Hong Kong, and it has a long history-when the Qing opened trade after the Opium Wars, Xiamen was one of the first five treaty ports (Guangzhou, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Ningbo, Shanghai). Many Chinese immigrants to the US left from Xiamen, and it was historically famous for exporting tea (Fujian province still produces a lot of tea). Encylopedia Brittanica has a good article on Xiamen which I think is available free online.
Good job on the quiz (as always), love getting to see you flex your place name knowledge. 20:18 I was yelling O'ahu at the screen 😭 20:29 Xiamen is not super random imo, it's the island city right next to Kinmen County.
I thought Södertörn (the southern part of Stockholm metro area with almost 800k) would be on the list, but it seems like it isn't internationally recognised as an island?
It's because it's an artificial island, the Södertälje and Hammarby canals that make it an island are man made. Also to be noted is that the SCB(Statistics Sweden) do consider it an island now(2014). So whether that leads to international recognition in the future, I'm not to know.
2:20 bro you know Yos Sudarso island what the heck. I'm pretty sure 80% Indonesian people don't know that it exists or cannot place it on maps lol. And its hilarious when you realized then that nobody lives there 😭
I was somewhere between 55 and 60 when I accidentally hit a bookmark and navigated away. I would have got a few more, but no more than 65. I was happy with that. I slightly cheated by looking up the names of Salsette, Viti Levu, and New Providence just before doing the quiz. I knew their biggest cities, I just didn't remember the corresponding island names. Since I didn't know the Chinese cities that might also be islands, I didn't look those up. I tried thinking of Xiamen while mid-quiz, but I couldn't quite remember the spelling. Similarly, I didn't look up the Indonesian and Philippine islands I didn't know, which meant I wasted time guessing things like "Nusa" and "West Nusa." That did work with Batam, which I didn't know was the name of the island. The only ones I got that you didn't were Oahu and Pemba. Like you, I tried Laval for Île Jésus. Same with Macau for Zhongshan Island. It used to be called Macau Island. Anyway, I did my duty by liking and commenting like a good boy. More HugeQuiz videos, please.
Valiant effort, it's really hard think of islands in this context, I only got 38 when I did the quiz, partly due to worse knowledge especially in Indonesia and The Philippines but I also missed Montreal and Manhattan I think, maybe even Singapore. I'm not entirely sure of the exact misses but there were some real facepalm moments for me haha. Good Job!
Yes, the island of Laval is called Île Jesus (Jesus island) because they use to be a few cities on the island but all of the merge together in the early 2000
Ya Vancouver island population is pretty decent. I kept yelling it at the screen. Surprised he missed it considering it comes up on geoguessr decently frequently
@@NathanLipetz he got Vancouver Island at 7:07, right before he guessed Montreal and Laval. I believe I made those three guesses in the same order when I did the quiz. I couldn't remember Île Jésus, but I had seen that before.
As a Chinese person, study China and don't brush it aside It's super frustrating to see you name all those obscure Russian and Indonesian places and then be like ehh China lol
Zhongshan is the island of Macau, Zhongshan and Zhuhai but nowadays mainly considered connected to the mainland. Haizhu is a district of Guangzhou/Gwongzau. Cangshan is a district of Fuzhou/Hokciu. The above two are river islands. Chongming is a district of Shanghai. Zhoushan is a city in Zhejiang which lies within an archipelago, southeast of Shanghai. :)
It's using Martinique's 2012 population of 390,371. The Jan 1, 2024 estimate is only 349,925, which would not make the top 100. I'm certain there are other discrepancies like that as they occur in other HugeQuiz games. Some places are more fastidious about counting their people than others.
