Can I over feed my bees?

It is critical to your bees survival over winter that they have enough food in the hive to last. It is far better to feed enough sugar syrup in the Fall than to be forced to feed candy, fondant or winter patties in the winter. The time spent now will pay dividends next Spring. But can you feed too much?

I'm a new bee keeper and I mixed like you for a short period, I figured out I was wasting a tremendous amount of time so I now fill a 65 gallon container in my truck with a diaphragm pump I plug in my trailer light plug, I have a 50' garden hose with the same thing you have on your indoor hose. I don't have spills no more and I cut my feeding time 75 percent.

I have a barrel for the back of my truck but haven't sorted out a pump yet! Good tip.

Another great video! Do you use a screen bottom board? If so, do you leave it as is all winter?
@BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer

Yes I do! On many of my hives, not all, but the tray underneath goes on for the winter to eliminate drafts

What you do by hand I do using Luggage Scale for ~$15. Just multiply the readout by 2x and take notes.... Center of gravity is in the middle of the hive and you lift using scale at the edge. The leverage is ~ 2:1. Accurate enough for me and I can compare with previous results.

Another great video. That clicking noise in the last few minutes is your cell phone interfering with the wireless microphone, I believe. You may want to consider leaving your phone in the truck when you record, or at least find another way to keep them several feet apart. I’m wrapping up my first year as a beekeeper, and your videos have given me confidence that I’m doing all that I can to be ready for winter.

I see that you are located in Camden. I lived in So. China for a few years. Our family kept bees in Gorham for years. Do you not have a problem with robbing when open feeding in the bee yard?
@BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer
@BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer 2 года назад
Actually I am in Hampden, but no generally robbing has been a small issue with my bees and I find if I do lose a hive to robbing it is alway one which was problematic and would have been culled anyway.

I'm really glad you posted this video. I'm in central Pennsylvania, 40 miles north of Harrisburg. Yesterday, I was watching the landing boards and sipping coffee. I noticed the bees leaving each hive like they were on a mission and coming back very heavy. I stood back to get a direction of travel and found that they were going to the recycle area of our local college. I found that they had found a dumpster that had several cases of out dated Starbucks syrup. According to the label, it's made of sugar, water and some kind of natural flavoring. It tastes like maple pancake syrup. Your thoughts?
@BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer

Looks like pretty good system .. I can't use my well water just to much mineral in it. Won't mix heavy syrup and bees don't do well on it they come out of winter looking rough then struggle till they catch a flow. So I use rain water or run over to my parents house for water. Got 5 used pickle drums and electric trolling motor to mix it. Got lucky this year fall flow was heavy production colony's made plenty of honey pulling the extra off today. The 120 nucs I made up in August different just been barrel feeding those with some buckets in one yard close to town. Totally agree feeding dry sugar early like I'm seeing more and more not a good idea for few different reasons. Fondant made for bees is way better if I need to emergency feed but I'd never draw them up like that early unless it's needed .. just Incase sugar bad idea. Bees don't even eat much till they start brooding up again anyway.

@@BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer it's not bad I mix it right on the Truck ...price sugar gone up really not saving much mixing it myself like 3 cents a pound I'll probably start buying it mixed next year.

If you want to reconcycle you can place those out in your garden for weed control or you can use them in your smoker for smoker fuel

You talk about putting on weight before winter, some people talk about letting the bees fend for themselves. last month, my hives were nearly empty of honey. There has been a lot of robbing and I made entrance screens and reducers to help with the problem. Been feeding 1/1 sugar every 5-days, the frames are filling up nicely and a small pollen patty (1/4 lb) also helped to stimulate new brood. The fall pollen looks sad due to dry weather and is nearly gone.. Good advice to everyone watching.

Don't put Heat or Acid into Sugar Syrup! It will make the Mix have high levels of HMF (toxic for Bees!) To many folk do the above without understanding the dangers of HMF.... Do some Research before justing doing, for doing's sake... 🤔 Happy Beekeeping 2021. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

I am using two 10 frame deeps to winter. Inspection last week showed top box was very heavy stores with couple frames of brood in the center. Bottom box brood center was dry comb with no visible laying and few frames stores on sides. Very light bottom box. Population in is great. I did this inspection while removing Formic pro so not overly concerned about the laying break. I was told I need to move a frame or two of brood to bottom box to get the queen down there. Wouldn’t this happen naturally if I am top feeding and as brood emerges in top box they will back fill forcing the queen down to the available comb? What are your thoughts on this. I haven’t seen you do this with your double deep setups I have been feeding 2 to 1
@BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer
@BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer 2 года назад
In my double deeps the queen is laying down stairs and the top box is only honey. I would suggest you feed heavily right away.

@@BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer I am feeding heavily. About a Gallon a day 2 to 1. If there is still evidence she is upstairs on those couple frames should I move them down bringing honey up or will she work her way down?
