A little known fact is you need to be able to actually diagnose the correct problem before applying the wrong old timers shade tree trick to fix it.

Stuck valves seem reasonable. Remove valve cover & crank it to observe the valve train & valve movement. If stuck, soak in your favorite penetrant for a while, followed by Marvel oil (MMO) let it soak for hours & occationally reapply MMO. Crank it again & observe valve movement. Some mechanics add MMO to NON-Ethanol gasoline for top-cylinder lube. A few install a MMO oil dispenser that mixes with intake air to do the same. If no valve movement, try the soft rope trick that piston aircraft mechanics use. Check pushrods for straighness & reset the valve lash. Good luck!

I have one of those pneumatic refillable spray bottle dealies that I keep full of MMM and Diesel fuel. 75/25 mix. I collect antique chainsaws amd small engines, and before I do much more than pull the rope to see if they are stuck, I spray it in the carb, down the spark plug hole, and of course on bar/chains. I use it in all my stuff. I mix it in with my chainsaw gas for my more modern saws, the newest being about 20 years old, put it in my lawnmower, my engine driven welder, outboard motor fuel, everything. FWIW- Bon Ami in the air intake, on non turboed diesels anyway, is to help rings seat in glazed cylinders, not to "free stuck rings". It right in the Caterpillar manuals from the 50's at least. It's your machine, do as you want, but not pulling the valve cover first before adding an abrasive was a big mistake IMO. If you can't get the valves loose with the head on, then pull the head! It's 1/2 an hour. You can afford to do that. Get the valves freed up, get some new plugs and I bet the ol' Case will surprise you.

Back in the 1970s I worked for a Lincoln-Mercury dealership and an old time mechanic told me that in 1958 some Ford engines came through with cylinder walls that were honed too smooth and the rings would not seat. He said Ford recommended sprinkling some Bon Ami down the carb to roughen up the walls enough that the rings would seat. I asked him if it worked and I don't recall his exact words but it was something to the effect of "Just don't overdo it."

Pop the spark plugs out and soak the cylinders in trans fluid, fill them up and leave it for a few days or even a week then turn it over with the plugs out to blow out all the trans fluid then toss the plugs in and try it.. usually trans fluid will loosen up the piston rings because I’m sure it’s more the rings than it is the cylinder walls.. the rings gets ruck stuck and seized into the pistons and the only way to free them is to use an oil with high Detergents.. did this to an old skidsteer of mine and it worked wonders.. stopped it from burning oil and all

Any type of thin wax string will work, tie it around the pinion shaft and push it up against the seal on the shaft and then have a buddy help and slowly wrap it around untill it has an edge built up to the outside of the seal and then you just run it and it heats and melts the wax and seals it up. I thought my dad was just busting my balls untill I saw it worked!

@anonymous whatever you can find that works without cutting the string or messing up the seal worse. I used the cap off a bic pen to push the string in up against the seal when I did it. I had a friend who was helping me with u joints about 2 years after I did it and he started pulling the string out and i yelled at him and then explained why there was string around it. If the bearings aren't bad on the pinion I'll usually use the wax string if it starts leaking. I have the micrometer and magnet set up to re gap the gears but sometimes it can be tedious stacking shims and tightening and testing to make sure there is the right amount of play where the gears mesh together.

I bought an old 40's IH crawler for $50 in the 1980's. It started on gas, and after it was warmed up, you shut the starting valves and it ran on diesel. I had very old plug wires that had no covers on the spark plug section. My friend discovered that the magneto was still running when it was on diesel. He found out when his pecker was against the tracks, and his finger was too close to the plug wire. I saw a skinny spark go into his finger and he hit the ground holding his crotch. He still remembers that. The only engine that had zero compression in the back cylinders had a broken cam in it. I also love the old 71 screamers. I had an Oliver with a 4-71 in it. Just keep it filled with oil. Smiles!

Detroit diesel engine service manual says to use it to scuff the liners

Back in the 60s and 70s yes but the liners were harder then and pc engines were prone to heating and glazing cylinders because of the cast rings. This is a last ditch effort

Clyde Schwartz, maybe you could provide a link so we can see that ? Frankly I don’t believe it because Detroit pistons are tin coated and screwing around like that would scrub the tin off. I never saw any publication by GM advocate backyard cures such as this. Nevertheless, I apologize in advance if it is proven that this procedure is endorsed by DDA / GM.

Make sure the piston is at TDC on the cylinder of the valve you’re working on and take the spring of so you can get something on the stem and twist it to loosen it up then pull it up and put air pressure in the spark plug hole to keep it in place to put the spring and keeper on and do the same with the other one and I’d bet that engine would probably purr along for much longer than you realize if you run it conservatively
