£6.65 to add 32 miles? My Hayabusa isn't that expensive at those speeds. 😯 Imagine how much cheaper an NC750 (similar petrol bike) would be.

@Wanderbike Anyone who thinks a 125 is more environmentally damaging than an equivalent ranged battery bike is off their head or can't do simple maths. I own a Grom (MSX) among my little collection and so far since new its never been below 100mpg - thats with a 23 stone ape on it hammering it mercilessly (yes I look ridiculous on it and get all the jokes about losing it up my backside but its brilliant fun). Its one of the most simple to make and least energy intensive to produce vehicles yet it can still do over 150mpg if ridden normally in town and going from history its likely to still be running 50 years from now unless poorly modified. Just to break even from a co2 pov for the battery alone on a Zero I was looking at, you would need to make the Grom then ride them at least (presuming that 100mpg worst case) 228,000 miles. Then you would have to have parity on recycling both and since there is no mandate and almost no recycling of li-ion batteries in practice thats even more. Thats presuming the battery on the Zero lasts 228,000 miles, of course. Better 125s than the MSX are available (though none more fun imo - try one if you want a laugh).

You can tour on an electric bike but as you have said you need a different mindset. In August I rode all the way around England on My Zero S. I went all around the coast and followed the border of Wales and Scotland. I had a few weeks off work so was in no rush, unlike this trip. My goal was to spend nothing on fuel which I achieved. I covered 2,153 miles in 11 days. Average daily distance was 196 miles. Charge stops numbered 43. The average charge duration was 50 minutes. My Zero only has level 2 charging so no CCS and the maximum it can charge at is 6kw so I charged exclusively at Tesco stores where it is free. One downside of all that charging was that I drank 30 cups of tea and 15 lattes over the course of the trip, plus multiple bacon butties.

Davinci bikes & the Evoke 6061 address that with 250 mile range and even 15mins for 80% charge. It's coming... all new technology starts expensive & gets stupid cheap (with way more features), very quick. Where we will be ripped off, is in the charging... or they'll just introduce pay per mile for everyone but more expensive for ICEs.
@ejbh3160
@ejbh3160 Год назад
Just checked the up to date new Evoke 6061. City range is 410 miles on one charge' Mixed range 307 miles. 0-60 in 3 seconds. Top speed 125mph. Charge time at maximum charge rate 30 minutes (CCS2 90kw charger) But on a domestic AC 3.3 kw it would take 12hrs (a domestic 7kw obvs half that) Price $24,999 USD... about £20k but no doubt with import and paperwork costs to add in the UK. It's early days & if there's a demand the market will provide.

Well done Bruce. Such a revealing vid. I have a friend who has a Ribelle from English Electric, and he rode down to Barcelona in December ! However, this is exactly what is putting me off buying an electric car let alone an electric bike. Significantly higher upfront cost then ICE and then high cost to refuel more often. Fine around town, and when charging at home, but pants for doing any distance. The UK charging infrastructure just isnt there yet. UK petrol stations should already be transitioning to electric. Updated thought……We have seen electric cars on the market now from all the major car companies, in fact some have several options. We haven’t seen the Japanese motorcycle manufacturers jumping in yet have we? Why not? It seems to be mainly specialist start up companies, apart from HD of course. Motorcycles maybe just don’t have the physical size to carry long range batteries.

Thanks for showing us the grim reality of trying to tour on an electric motorcycle. We were following your journey as you did it and honestly we were slightly concerned for your safety sleeping on the ground as the bike charged. If you were to properly tour on one of these bikes then the route would be solely based around charge points instead of riding good roads, completely destroying the whole reason you go touring on a motorcycle. I see a channel called Marc Travels is attempting a European tour on his electric bike, sort of interested how he gets on. 🤔

Electricity is only much cheaper than gas if charging at home and commuting or riding within your home sphere (100-ish miles). Long distance riding, like long distance driving an EV, is comparable to gas. But you don't buy these for lower gas prices (that's just a nice side effect). You buy these for performance.
@teapotone
@teapotone 2 года назад
Problem is you can’t utilise that performance when on a long ride as it hammers the battery 🤷‍♂️

@teapotone
@teapotone 2 года назад
Genuinely, you DON’T want to keep a stable speed on electric, you want to be up and down the revs/throttle because a constant throttle is what really drains the battery - particularly a constant high speed of around 65mph and above. This is why dual carriageways and motorways rinse the battery so quickly, yet you can get 250 miles out the Ribelle when riding in towns and cities
@IIARROWS

Been driving fully EV cars for 10 years and this video is spot on! The network is patchy at best, I actually found it less stressful 10 years ago. I enjoy using an EV within one battery charge range, and I can charge at home for 1p/mile……..but longer trips take that different mindset you mention Bruce, and that’s not for everyone. I use numbers and physics daily in my job so constantly reassessing range/efficiency etc is something I enjoy 😬🙄🤣. EV motorbikes I like the idea of but we either need 5x battery density or 10x chargers (and not just on motorways). Can’t see me swapping from the GS to one of these for a few years. Great honest review Bruce. (And finding apps/cards etc on a motorbike seems more of a PITA than a car, and it’s bad then)
@sagalout
@sagalout 2 года назад
I agree with this. I’ve had an EV for 3 years and in a car it generally works ok provided you’re prepared to plan on longer journeys. We’ve used ours for plenty of holidays and it’s been fine, however it is more stressful now than a few years ago as there’s a lot more EVs and it many more chargers! I wouldn’t swap my bike yet though. For me it’s a limitation of packaging. I can only assume that the necessary battery management for proper fast charging takes up a lot of space or weight. If the bike charged at the same speed as the average 100kw car it should only take about 10 mins to charge, but it’s obviously much much slower than the charger can provide

Not only the patchiness of EV charging points and distance per charge.... but am I missing something? Current petrol prices it costs me approx £18 to fill up and I get an average 75 mpg = 180 mile range approx Going by TeapotOne's video that's 3/4 charging points (from £3.30 to £6.??) - say £4.50 per charge = £13.50 or £18.00 .......which means there's little if any cost savings* unless you just use your EV motorcycle from home on every journey. *And that's excluding all the time wasted/stopped waiting for charge.
@sagalout
@sagalout 2 года назад
@@philhunt9297 Yes, that’s about right. Again, not really an issue in a car as you start the day with 200-300 miles so rarely have to charge away from home (assuming you can). If you typically commute or just go for a sub 100 mile Sunday blast on a bike it would be super cheap / almost free but public charging is expensive now

Spot on there Phil, but a comparison on my GS works out differently. I spent around £165 on charging to cover 2,300 miles. I get around 180 miles to a tank on the GS which costs from £32-£40 depending on whether I use 95-98, so let’s go with the cheaper. That means to cover the 2,300 miles I’d need (2300/180) = 13 tanks of fuel at £32 a go, equals £416 Electric - £165 Fuel - £416

More chargers have been installed in Wales and the SW since this trip. More of them are fast DC chargers - but there is still the problem of broken down chargers not being repaired quickly enough. Last year I toured around Ireland on a Zero DSR - many more chargers per square mile.

Meanwhile everage mileage is 60 a day for bikers and everybody whining about their longtrips that they make every 5 years or so .. meanwhile go slower on backroads and you can do up to 350km a day easily on the experia Or charge and do double .. 700km . Or ride faster and do 500km . Thats oke for me !!

A really great review of the practicalities of using an electric bike with today’s woeful infrastructure. EVs used to be cheap to charge but no longer. The ever increasing cost of electricity, particularly to business, ie, public charge points, means it’s now cheaper to fuel an ICE engine.

Quality video! As another viewer mentioned below, this is what we watch RU-vid for! And what an amateur move by Energica to not lend you an Experia. The problem with electric bikes is energy density. Bikes only really work well in the first place because liquid fuels are incredibly energy dense. The batteries we have at the moment - and for the forseable future - simply can't hold enough energy in a small/light enough space to make them a real alternative. Yes you can make ever heavier and bulkier bikes which can cover more miles but thats not the same as adding a slightly larger tank to have the same effect on an ice bike. Electrics are great while they're well within their range and if you don't mind having a much heavier bike than necessary. Electric motors offer a great amount of power for their size and give a level of control I've never found even on the best ice bikes. Batteries to power them just makes them bulky, slow to charge and even from an environmental pov pointless. Bruce top marks for sticking with this but you're one in a million. Most people would have done the first charge stop, realised it was going to be a joke and gone home.
@Bowlin01

Well done Bruce, admire your grit and determination, I think I'd have got bored/ pissed-off and binned it. A really great 'real World' demonstration of electric bike use over longer distances. Of course you'll have to repeat the whole thing on the Experia when you can get one so we can see the difference 😂😅😂
@Surestick88
@Surestick88 2 года назад
The issue with electric motorbikes, urban use aside, is aero and size constraints. Electric cars are useable for long journeys because they have space for more battery capacity, the extra weight isn't as big an issue, and they have a big aero advantage over motorbikes so you have a few hours range by which time you're ready for a restroom break and a snack which, conveniently, takes about the same time as an 80% charge (assuming a newer car with the fastest DC charging). On a bike though... Not so much. I wonder if we'll see a change in bike design to something like the old streamliner bikes or the Akira bike to provide more aero and/or more room for batteries. I guess battery tech will improve to. Interesting times.

Good way to show the shortcomings, and all that is left until it's a reliable and dependable way of travelling longer distances. You sacrificed your butt, and a few brain cells to make us wiser. *bows* Thanks! By the way: When all is said and done, will you sum up the costs, average speed, and total travel time and distance? For a really full comparison, can you, directly afterwards, jump onto the BMW and do the same journey on a petrol driven bike. No? Don't cry! 😜

As someone that drives an EV car, I must say for a very expensive bike, the charge rate is shite. It’s only got a tiny battery. So technically on a Rapid CCS charger that stupid little battery should be over 80% in minutes, not take nearly an hour. Back to the drawing board please Energica and sort out the BMS and DC charge rate. My car goes from 10% to over 80% in a similar time to the bike. The car battery is 44.5 kWh. Top job done Bruce. You are more tolerant and patient than I am. I would’ve thrown that thing in a bush and called a taxi. Keep up the great work.
