Here are 2 fun facts: In order to prevent leaks, they wrote and animated several alternate endings for different suspects. The original plan was for Barney to shoot Mr. Burns. They were even going to write him out of the show for the season because he was in jail. But the show is called "The Simpsons", so the writers felt the shooter had to be a Simpson. They chose Maggie because she was the only Simpson who could not be imprisoned.

so, fun fact! Due to this ending, maggie has become sort of an angel of death in the series. she's shot far more people than mr burns since this episode aired, even taking down the mob when they tried to storm the simpsons house. There's a couple of ACTUAL hints at it being Maggie. It's consistently shown throughout the series Burns is VERY weak, so if he struggles with someone, they must also be weak. The sundial he lands on is SW. This could be Scottish Willie, or Waylon Smithers, possibly other townsfolk but eh. But if you flip it, it's MS, which could be a number of characters. Marge Simpson, Moe Syzlak (I forget how to spell his surname), possibly other characters I've forgotten, OR Maggie Simpson. Combine some other clues like him saying like taking candy from a baby, the 'bottle' crushing the gerbil etc.

This was a very clever analysis. You even pointed out some details of the mystery that I never even picked up on before, such as the analogy between the gerbil and Burns, Burns being so invested in his own booby traps, and Burns being able to recognize his "assailant" on sight. You even came up with possible motives for the dog to shoot Burns, I never would have thought of that idea as a kid. You even clocked that Homer was the episode's fall guy, knowing that a key part of the episode was the emphasis on Burns never remembering who Homer is. Another fun scene that adds to the reveal, is the scene where Mr. Burns and Mr. Smithers indulge themselves with Homer's box of chocolates. As they eat the chocolates they soon see the family photo behind them. Here it's shown that with the obvious exception of Homer, Mr. Burns actually DOES recognize each member of the Simpsons family - including Maggie and the dog. So, when Burns runs into Maggie later, his initial response "Oh, it's you," lines up with what we saw here in this scene.

The fun thing about this mystery is you can solve it both from a Wattsonian and Doylist perspective just using Part 1(both using meta clues for the audience and in-universe clues). Burns was shot with his own gun(implying the killer did not have their own gun), so everyone we see has a gun is eliminated. (Smithers, Barney, Moe, and Mel has a knife. Grandpa, Bart, and Marge are debatable as only one of them can have the gun at once.). Smithers has an alibi(there's a TV in Part 1 that says when his show airs and he says he never misses it and we know the meeting is at 3) and so does Marge. Secondly, it is well established in the show time and time again that Burn's is extremely weak, so the fact he struggled with his assailant means they're either really old, really young, or drunk. This eliminates all the adults(Smithers and Barney are already cleared) and just leaves Grandpa, Bart, Maggie, and the Dog. The Dog does not have thumbs, they are out. And both Grandpa and Bart PROBABLY had access to a gun of their own, which combined with Maggie being at the scene of the crime points only to her. The meta evidence is that Maggie is the only one who stares down Burns in the meeting, her face showed up first in the candy box(right after he talks about taking candy from a baby), she can't be punished so she's safe for the writers to use, and Burns falling on M.S. So whether you want to view it from a meta perspective or even JUST using in-universe evidence, it's solvable from the end of Part 1.

I love that we are considering the dog a legit suspect, nothing actually clears the dog, but then we circle back around to "but the dog is a dog and therefore it's not a suspect." But also, this is all good fun to talk about but of course it is solvable, the writers took great pride in the fact that part 1 does have sufficient amount of clues to logic out the answer. The only reason it wasn't "officially" solved is because the contest was a cross promotion with 1-800-collect, and as it turned out there was less crossover between 1-800-collect customers and Simpsons fans than expected. As an aside, I love the idea of trying to explain this whole thing to a gen alpha kid: "See they had to use 1-800-collect to enter the contest. . . Oh 1-800-collect was one of a number of companies you could make a collect call with . . . Oh a collect call is where you make a long distance call and the person receiving the call pays for it . . . Oh see we used to have to pay more to make a call to a phone that was further away, for some reason . . . Oh our phones used to be tied to a specific location . . . Yeah your phones where just in your house, if you where out and about you couldn't be reached. . . Yeah that part is worse but mostly it's better now. You should go watch Bluey or something. . . Oh you know what. Maybe Bluey could be a suspect. I mean he is a dog but I think he does have opposable thumbs."

@@bbtb05 I will say for the record if you want to be super technical, Lisa can't be fully eliminated as a suspect from a purely Doylist perspective. She's physically weak, doesn't have an alibi, and doesn't have a gun of her own. She's not specifically known to be AT the scene like Maggie was so she's still less likely, but you can't fully rule Lisa out. Of course if you consider any of the meta stuff it's clearly Maggie, but eh

I had forgotten how much fun the 'who killed Mr Burns?' episodes were! You should DEFINITELY try Broadchurch Season 1. It's a UK crime drama, aired in 2013 on ITV in the UK and EVERYONE was trying to work out who killed Danny. Stars David Tennant and Olivis Coleman. It's not weird like Twin Peaks or funny like the Simpsons, but if you wanted to try a drama show it's really excellent.

If you want another Twin Peaks style full series, the best bet is Gravity Falls. It has two big mystery's set out from episode 1 that last most of the series. "Who wrote the mysterious Journals?" and "What do the symbols at the start of every episode mean?" There are also two smaller mysteries to keep track of, "What's Going on With Gravity Falls and it's citizens?"(There are various smaller mysteries and reveals, almost everyone is hiding SOMETHING), and "Where are the other two journals?"(The mysterious journal our main character has is labeled Number 3. Where are Number 1 and 2?) which are revealed throughout the show.

Oooh that's a really good one, because the fandom did almost guess the big twist well in advance, but this was multiple people working together having years to figure it out. How someone would stand up with just one watch through (especially if they have to figure out the ciphers themselves) would be very interesting. And the fandom missed a very big part of the twist.

If the original series of "Dallas" is still available anywhere, the whole "Who Shot J.R.?" thing was so iconic that I'd honestly recommend reading the Wikipedia entry after you watch it if you decide to do that, because the buzz around it was wild. It was a massive, worldwide pop culture moment that I don't think is even possible anymore, and it's really fascinating to me. J.R. is shot in the season 3 finale, "A House Divided," and the killer is revealed in season 4, episode 4, "Who Done It."

A clue that's often overlooked is that in the first episode we see mr.Burns is really really weak, but at the end of the episode we hear an actual struggle for a few seconds before he's shot So that means the shooter was weak enough for Burns to be able to struggle a few seconds, therefore it can't be an adult

Surprised you got so much out of it, one theory that it was supposed to be Homer originally, because at the end of the episode you see Homer dressed as Krusty, looking exactly the same as he did in the Clown College episode, could have been an animation error, could have been a red herring, could have been that Homer was going to frame Krusty. There's even a joke in a waaay later episode where Homer just blurts out "if I get caught I'm pinning it on the baby, like the time I shot Mr. Burns!"

Suggestion for ‘can I solve ___ before the reveal’: Can I solve Danganronpa before the reveal? It’s about a murder mystery escape room game where 15 students are trapped in a building and they have to kill in order to escape. There are 5 different murder cases in each chapter, and a grand reveal to who is the mastermind of the game. If you do this, I want to see you try to figure out who is the victim, who is the killer of that victim and ultimately, who is the mastermind. All before they are all revealed. I’ll be surprised if you get the first killer wrong.

I'm a huge fan of the show, but I was only a toddler when this came out, so I never got an opportunity to solve this mystery (I already knew the answer through social osmosis when I did finally watch these episodes). My recommendation is *_Veronica Mars._* Every season has one big mystery, so you'd have material for five videos (there are 3 original seasons + a movie + a revival they did on Hulu).

@@ilexdiapason As a brit, something I actually noticed when I went to America and saw the simpsons was that there were small parts that were cut out. Upon further research I discovered that although the simpsons was made in America, and for American audiences, certain TV stations in America choose to prioritise ad time over show running time, meaning they were cutting additional sections out of simpsons episodes. So what blows my mind is that I may have seen parts from Simpsons episodes that Americans haven't, just because UK show running times allow for more content.
@dngillikin
@dngillikin 5 месяцев назад
We saw those missing bits during the episodes' first airings. The editing to make room for more ad time happens for reruns usually a few years later. The time given over to advertising has slowly grown over the decades. In the late sixties, we got between 50-52 minutes of program per hour. In the late seventies to about the mid eighties, we were down to around 49 minutes an hour. Then down to 45 minutes for much of the nineties. Then down to 43 in the 2000's. Nowadays we're down to around 40-42 minutes of program per hour.
@PositiveVibes94
@PositiveVibes94 5 месяцев назад
@@dngillikin it's so wild, here in the UK, we generally have 1 ad break of around 3 minutes out of every 30 minute timeslot. 1 episode of the Simpsons would be around 22 minutes, plus 3 minutes of ads in the middle, which leaves a 2 and a half minute gap on either side for bumps and explaining what's up next etc. Going to America in 2017 was wild, seeing adverts what felt like every 5 minutes. This was so much fun!! Even if I knew the reveal from the beginning of the video, I was enjoying your theories because you really did get very close to the solution, especially with the "Burns gets shot by his own actions" and "the dog did it", becaude both are technically correct. Remember, the dog was there with Maggie when it happened. We know they both hate Burns for what he's done (during the towns meeting we see a second of Maggie looking quite angry), so I wouldn't be surprised if it was at first intended for the incident to be a collaboration between Maggie and the dog, but they probably cut incinuating such a thing for time constraints. Edit: That being said, I'm surprised you didn't have an immediate realization after you said "Whoever he's talking to, does not talk". I was like: EXACTLY!
