To find out I put almost 8 flasks (640lbs) in a reinforced plastic tub and step in. Help me make videos by donating here: / codyslab Follow me on Facebook: / codydonreeder SubReddit: / codyslab
......*Thinks slowly to self* ..... ..... .... .... OH, I GET IT! ....... That makes sense! Since mars is closer to the sun than mercury is in the solar system, so a man would walk on mars on a space mission before .... wait a second, there's something else going on here ....
It's like, consciously I know how dense mercury is being metal. It cognitively makes perfect sense that a tub of the stuff would be extremely heavy. Actually physically seeing it, my brain doesn't accept it. It looks like I should be able to grab that tub and lug it around with a little effort.
@@jupiter_ios Why imagine a liquid as a solid if it's not a solid? Is that really the best way for us to understand things -- by pretending those things are not what they really are -- instead of just training our brains to be better at understanding the things in the world around us as they _actually_ are?
@@davecarsley8773 in the sun from some angles it just looks like water and you can imagine that thing is heavy but not unliftable like a massive steel block that size.
It's not really the density that causes it. Mercury is extremely cohesive and less adhesive than water, that's why it can clump together to create those big droplets and generally doesn't stick to surfaces. Water "sticks" more easily to another material and makes less big droplets which will end up in the porous structure of a paper towel. On top of that water also sticks to paper towels because of the cellulose fibers, which it will cling to even more.
The first chinese emperor had a model of a china map in his grave. The rivers in there were filled with liquid mercury. I would say that some of the builders of this funeral chamber already put a footprint in it more than 2000 years ago ;)
@@jamesvogt4739 A 4channer uploaded a photo anonymously to the site showcasing his feet in a plastic bin of mercury with the statement: "This is the mercury you drink at Burger King." *Admittedly, he had boots on. But thats even worse.*
You could skim on the surface. Man, that would be WEIRD. There should totally be a carnival event where you put on hazmat suits and play in a mercury pool.
Man, your brilliant insanity never fails to shock and inspire. I am more politically and culturally minded as a student of history, literature and human behavior but you are the other side of my coin. What I paint with words you cover over on the same canvas with the wisdom of concrete science which challenges me to paint more and teaches me to forget myself within the process because the work is for the work and it necessitates it's own need to be. Thanks for that, you perhaps have no idea of how not alone it makes me feel.
I like how all the safety police are fixated on the mercury and only like one guy seems concerned about the much more urgent hazard of falling on his face.
Nah it was more of a joke. However you can search on Wikipedia for gas toxicity of metal mercury (when oxydized it releases few amounts of mercury that goes in air and when you breath it, it goes to lungs, becomes another chemical form of mercury which is neurotoxic), and about the ridiculously low amount of mercury required to get intoxicated. He's totally responsive of his own life but I would certainly stay very far away from this mercury bath :p
Actually it evaporates at room temperature. If he does what he did in this video twice in a lifetime, I believe it's quite OK, especially being outside (well ventilated area, I guess :p)
Dude that is badass this had put some many applications to things in my process thinking build something super creative with all these principles of chemistry and physics I can't wait to be rich enough to have my own lab
Richard's World Traveler i think he did for real. Hes probably too smart to send the application, which would agree with as its mostly braking bs records, and making cheap entertainment.
I've been subbed to you for years and just read your comment on that Joel Hacker video about the anvil floating on murcury video. That's so sad, man. Keep those copyright claims going! We love you!
i think the best thing about this video was the last few minutes, seeing him clean up everything, so methodical, careful, ensuring everything was clean and clear and properly handled. Respect man. thats why everyone loves you and you got your channel back i only wish good things for you in the future. we need more people like you around
Man your videos are awesome what I would do just to hang out with you for a day I would learn so much thank you for sharing keep up the good work I will be looking forward to your next video God bless
The part where you show how you NOT waste the mercury and clean up is actually the most educational part in your video, especially considered that the major audience is the small ones --- liked and subscribed ---
I would really like to see if you could walk across a kitty pool or something of that nature. The question I have with this is "how can one redistribute their mass so that they don't fall over" and other questions of that nature. I'm sure its very possible to walk across quicksilver, but weight, gravity, and density seem like they're all combining factors to this.
If your boots/shoes had a large enough surface area on the bottom you could probably walk on top of a pool of mercury. Kind of like snowshoes. Great video!
Cody, have you ever thought about making cheese? I don't know if you have direct access to milk but it may be cool to make some classic European cheeses?
My dad had a friend who worked at an electroplating shop. They had a small drum, maybe 20 gallon size, of mercury. The challenge was to put your whole arm in and touch the bottom. Always fun to watch people try it for the first time.
@@josephcote6120 I had a friend of mine who's dad used to work in a refinery. He now has Alzheimer's disease and fids. Doctors have said that it's due to exposure to heavy metals. He passed away 3 weeks ago..
@@Sanjay_ar1 he's not talking about refining it, he's talking about elemental mercury, which in itself is largely ok to touch bare handed (as shown in this video when cody sticks his foot in it)
You need to take the time and make a 5-10 minute video on the science of mercury. That way, you can link it at the start of every video that contains it so people quite wierding out all concerned. If that video exists already, I don't remember seeing it.
This is pretty cool but i do wonder if this would be as effective without the boots. Still better safe than sorry with an open wound in the mix! Cool video!

That's pretty wild, man! Some day, you'll have a whole pool or hottub full of the stuff. Even one of those watering troughs, properly reinforced would be pretty rad
7:25 That's a common misconception with water in swimming pools because know humans can be buoyant enough to actually float. There's no way to naturally stabilize the pressure because gravity (your body weight) will *ALWAYS* be more dominant than every other existing force
Fake ass not real jesus. The guy that never existed. Cody is way better than jesus because he is trying to educate people on real stuff. He isn't a fake dude making fake claims through a shitty false book :)
Somebody didn't watch the blood test result video. The only brave part of this is the chance of losing balance. Touching mercury is not remotely the same as eating things that have _compounds_ of mercury in them, like all the fish some "healthy" people may be eating too much of. Sodium makes explosive fire in contact with _water._ Chlorine is poisonous. _Sodium chloride_ is a vital part of our physiology in proper doses, and makes fried potatoes taste better.
Dude you are super badass well done sir well done. Came here after thinking about the tombs under pyramids found to have pools of liquid mercury inside. 👌🏻 fascinating
