Is there anything better than watching a new Ed Pratt video while eating dinner in the tent on a cycletour? Simply amazing! Absolutely love this series!
My guess is a Latvian equivalent of the remains of crannogs… a form of early settlement in Scotland where houses were built above water on stilts to keep the inhabitants safe. They tend to leave such remains behind them, I believe. I came for the unicycling, but the beauty of Latvia has really taken my breath away. Fantastic!
Those rings are more than likely floating islands. They get round because they spin, rub up against the shore and other things. There are a lot of them around the world. Some that have grown to the size they've almost completely taken over the lake they are in. I only know this because I ended up watching a whole documentary about them. On some of the inhabited lakes, those that live there have to tow the islands away from bridges and such so they don't get stuck.
from a science point of view shiny side up, however its likely shiny on both sides, but with shiny side up and foam down, its insulated from the ground and the shiny will reflect heat back up, you dont reflect cold down as its the absence of heat.
hammocker here: when it's cold, shiny side up, but, for condensation reasons in real cold, add a "wicking" layer, and allow the foam and the wicking layer to dry completely between uses. Honestly, most of the time, b, you're better off with a hammock quiltset, would be warmer and take up less space than that pad. weight might be similar. downside to quilts is you have to be more careful not to get it wet, the pad will dry much quicker
Shiny side up in cold weather because it is the insulation side and will reflect your body heat back at you. And since you are suspended in the air and not laying on the ground turning it outside isn't really necessary because the air isn't as cold as the ground wouldbe.
Amazing stuff Ed; this is living at its finest. Adventure, nature, fitness, friends and freedom all via one wheel and a smile on your face. Keep going!
It's probably shiny side up, same as in ski trousers. Love these series. I was in Riga last summer and went at the beach in Jurmala. A bit too crowded for my taste, but loved the country
It's interesting to see the different forest ecosystems. In my neck of the woods it tends to be more coniferous or mixed forests with horsetail where there is a boggy bit
Another great chapter in the series! Even though it seems unlikely I think circles like that can be from volcanic activity, and the sulfer pools you mentioned would be as well. Leaving some inceased probability of this option
What an amazing thing to be doing. Making memories and living life. Remember it's not the journey it's the things that happen along the way. God bless you guys!!!!!
I am pretty sure they aren't doing anything anymore. They are remnants of some old activity on the lake. I think the guess on fishery is so far the likeliest one
I have run on similar bridges, and I can confirm that looks fun for running, especially if bridge has a bouncy give much like a really modern mid 2000's an newer all weather running track it can be fun for running.
@@SylvainOULALAshiny side reflects the infrared back to your body instead of allowing it to radiate out onto the environment. downside to foam pads is they collect condensation from your body. better off with a down quilt, and it should pack down smaller. the pad should be better on the ground if needed, but by far quilts are better in the hammock, and I'm told the top-quilt on it's own is better on the ground than a traditional sleeping bag too
Known you for a couple of years and I watched every video if this series. Suddenly I thought the chance for someone stealing your unicycle is quite slim 😅
There were mallard ducks near the seaweed....ands now I'm trying to think if I've ever seen ducks near the sea before. I'm pretty sure I've only see them near freshwater 🤷♂ (I googled, a lot of results were people being surprised that they'd just seen mallards in the sea :)
I've wondered about this a long time ago but have always forgot to ask. How tall are you, Ed? I figure something like 6'2 because you always seem to make these big wheel unicycles look smaller than you'd think they would.
I was also thinking that it might be algae concentrating around places where nutrients bubble up, and that the comment on the spa seemed to support that concept.
Not to question a guy who's unicycled around the world and can't stand up like you can on a bike, but how do you get on with padded shorts? I found in mtb I get far too soggy and that causes rashes, also the foam spreads weight to areas other than the sit bones and that causes pressure soreness too. In lockdown I ditched the soggy nappy and just wear lycra gym type boxers, after about a month of hardening up the sit bones with regular short rides I could ride 6 hours no issues and no more nappy rash or soreness.
Do you eat protein? Your diet seems very... not carb heavy but just protein light, and this is coming from a normie who doesn't tax their body anywhere near as much.
