The whole point of the sword causing "more pain" is that the blade can basically tear the flesh and organs out of demons because the serrated parts act like hooks. It requires more strength to pull it out, yes, but then again inosuke is jacked as freak so that probably helps. Also, demons can feel pain, it just won't kill them.
For real. Like with he way Inosuke grew up in combo with how utterly ripped he is, I strangely dont think that the extra effort makes much of a difference for him… in fact it may urge him to work harder.
@@S.A.F.T.I Not true at all. Breathing extract more power from your muscles, if you don't have enough muscle mass, you won't be able to use your technique properly and will end up hurting yourself badly.
I did say largely, having greater muscle mass *helps* but it isn't a necessity. Tanjirou can still use his (I can never remember which is which fire or flame?) Flame breathing, he just can't use it for long. Slayers can still move at superhuman speed and cut boulders in half like they're made of butter. The point I wanted to make is that Inosuke wouldn't have trouble pulling his blades out of a Demon even on the off chance he was stupid enough to try a thrust attack.
Yeah, the serrations are meant to simulate the fangs and claws of a beast(part of why his breathing style is called Beast Breathing and all but one of his forms are call fangs) and rip and tear at the target. They're not meant to slice through cleanly like mos other swords, just like how Shinobu's sword is designed more for piercing rather than slashing.
people do confuse smart with intelligence though. Inosuke is like goku if you think about it too, both are extremely smart when it comes to combat, but really dumb when it comes to anything else
@@akaza2905 not really no, his technique doesn't have the finesse the other techniques have, but it has a brutality that the others don't, not to mention that one of his breathing techniques is a goddamned radar
The point of Inosuke’s swords being serrated is so that there is more potential damage caused on the way out of a pierce attack, and for more damage wrenching his blades out of an opponent. It also leaves a more uneven tear in the skin when a slash misses, thus making it harder to heal
@@houseofaction Its not about demons really,Inosuke is just used to that stuff because he doesnt fight only demons(atleast before he joined Tanjiro party and even after that its just force of habit)
Not to mention that serrated edges cause incredibly heavy bleeding from even shallow cuts I know from experience Cutting a bagel gone wrong Went through no less than 3 bandages
Inosuke serrated blade is actually incredibly useful, while it takes more force to pull it out after piercing, that's to the weapons benefit and there's a long history of weapons that effectively grab onto you once inside. The idea is that even if you get away with a weapon like that in you, eventually you'll have to pull it out, and by grabbing onto flesh and organs it's essentially impossible to pull it out without doing far more severe, and likely far more fatal damage to your body.
It is completely stupid to have serrated katana it breaks insanely easy it bends suoer easy it can get stuck inside anything light blade like katana is prone to getting stuck inside harder materials and inosukes strength will only help to break it or bemd it even easier

I can see why Inosuke would say his swords cause more pain. Imagine having those swords go through you (if you were Inosuke's enemy mind you). Instead of going through smoothly like a regular katana. It would cut you up as it slid through his you. I certainly would rather be run through by a regular katana. Inosuke's swords don't just slice, they tear and shred.

They actually mention this in the anime, during the battle with akaza, when inosuke tries to hit akaza, he tries to pierce him During the entertainment district arc, when he hits daki, she acknowledges the weaknesses that you mention (you can't cut my head off, not with these beat up blades) but instead inosuke uses them as saws
Inosuke’s fighting style is based on how he grew up. Wild, unconventional, savage, intuitive and animalistic. It’s called beast breathing for a reason because the hacking, slashing, and sawing are all about eviscerating his adversaries as much as possible.
The reason why Insouke likes putting "holes" in his katanas is because he prefers ripping and tearing instead of slicing, this was actually pointed about by him when Tanjiro and him first met. Edit: and he also uses them as saws, thanks for telling me in the replies. Another edit: oh and thanks for the 1.4k likes lads
Makes sense in a way. His attacks were pointed out as being physically low, akin to fighting an animal. Boars can't slice through meat the same way a sword does, it's more like tearing and slashing just like his blade
@@darthviriditas7669 well it's more of an impale, and gorging out type of attack for boars. Probably some crushing as well. His blades are more like jagged teeth then tusks.
It may seem confusing at first but inosuke has an interesting point with serrating the edge. It may be harder to take out after piercing but as you take it out, it does more damage because it rips up the insides. Also the serrated edge has a slightly rougher slice on purpose because while clean cuts go deeper, rough cuts make things much more painful and harder to heal, not to mention that inosuke grew up by himself in the wild so he wasn't just fighting demons who feel no pain with the katanas
Actually I think that it is useful that his blades get stuck inside of flash, because his 7th fang (forgot the name) is him throwing both swords into the enemy, and if they were normal katana, they would just maybe slide in and fall out easily
For the piercing attacks, keep in mind that the martial artist used his hand to pull the sword free from the watermelon. Inosuke is usually holding two swords, so his hands aren't really an option for anything other than swordplay. They're also fighting beings who probably won't die from wounds that would normally be lethal to humans, so by piercing a demon with his swords I think of it as more of a grapple. While he has a demon locked down for a moment, he could just use his foot to kick the demon away which would pry the swords free while also dealing some damage. Locking down a demon by piercing them also puts them at a disadvantage if other demon slayers are around to follow up, so the demon would likely want to free themselves and get some distance from Inosuke if they can, dealing damage in yet another way. Plus with two swords and Inosuke's brute strength, pulling the swords free or using them at the same time to create a sawing action is probably effortless. So I think Inosuke's swords are effective tools for butchering opponents that can quickly regenerate, as it momentarily takes away the demon's ability to defend their neck.
Another problem I would see with Inosuke's swords is that they would be more prone to breaking. All the indents will concentrate stresses at the corners, and since he makes them by breaking the blade with a rock there might already be cracks there.
Pretty fun to watch! Watermelons aren't hard to cut through even with relatively dull blades so I'm not sure they're a great test medium, but who doesn't like to watch things getting cut with swords?
@@cmc1517 I think a tatami mat by itself would have been fine. Apparently these swords are made of 1060, so if they were good enough to cut through tatami I think I'd be sold.
Inosuke's also used his swords to "saw through" things that were too soft or too hard to cut with a normal sword, much like when Daki turned her neck into fabric to try avoiding getting decapitated.
The First Fang of Beast Breathing is literally called “Pierce” and it’s a stab with both swords, so you’d hope it comes out and goes in easily, though it probably would cause more pain I guess it’s open for a part two, all you need are volunteers
It doesnt come out easily, unfortunately watermelon doesnt have a ribcage to test it but if that was a human u would see more than just blood come out of the body. Not to mention it would damage your katana but hey! Thats fuckn inosuke and that sword is not a regular sword so nothing to worry about
@@alijalalzadeh745 the main benefit would be when pulling it out, there is no rome for doubt that whatever you put it in won't recover, however that's not very against demons who can only die by having there head slices off
@@neo8039 which doesn’t matter for demons cuz they’ll just heal anyway so causing more dmg doesn’t do much especially against upper moons or people in that tier
Brothers, Inosuke had been living in the forest, so, demons aren't the only thing he was fighting against. It's possible that he made the blade that way because when fighting against an animal, he found it more effective. Therefore, he thinks that the same goes for the demons.
I think it's important to note that demon slayers use breathing techniques that make them almost as strong as demons. That means inosuke would more than likely have zero issue with any downfalls of his swords, & all the fun
Serrated blades will be hard to pull out but It will mess someone up going in and coming out so there will be more damage. It’s probably not the best for fast paced combat but it might be worth a shot if the targets can’t really fight back while you are pulling the blade out.
Inosuke says uses his sword for “more pain” because of the way the blade works like a saw. It’ll hurt more instead of just slicing. He incorporates pulling towards and from his opponent when piercing, as seen in his Sixth Fang.
Actually, demons do feel something when hit or when they get their neck sliced based on the kind of technique. There was an extra panel in one manga that shows the reaction of demons that died from a hashira and the main 3 characters. For example, Water style form depends. Like when Giyu uses dead calm, the pain is like a cold flow of water, calm. And that goes for every form.
Now that you mention it they definitely feel pain because Tanjiro has the "gentle rain after the drought" or whatever it's called to kill them painlessly
@@ShuraEssays to add up to this. Yeah Demons do feel pain but demon slayers like to inflict said pain as a reflection of their inner pain. As explained by the hashiras and ex hashiras. Initially all styles had several postures and attacks for getting a different result when dealing with demons. Some were about doing precise cuts, others to inflict as much pain on the target as possible and then some "weird" styles had painless deaths. Unfortunately since Demons don't care about the pain their victims feel and some even enjoy that pain, fear, agony and such as according to them "makes meat taste tastier", all the other styles gave up on the "painless death" moves as the demon corps agree that Demons will never care for their human victims so why they should care for those monsters? Only water kept their painless death move because most practitioners of said style have a special posture/relationship on Demons. And they know that while weird and exceedingly rare, there are Demons who aren't evil and that accept the freedom of death when their time come so for those weird rare cases "gentle rain after the drought" was kept. If I recall on the the extra panels of the village arc. Only Love breathing is the other style that keeps a gentle death move and Shinobu if she deems a demon worth killing with a quick death poison. Other than that, no other style kept their gentle death moves by the time of Tanjiro's story. Edit 1: Also almost at the end if my memory recalls it correctly, it was explained that when Demons first came into existence, Muzan was the only real exception to the rule as many Demons did not look or own such wretched appearances or demon arts. That started to happened when Demons got stronger, started to develop/evolution and kept living for centuries. So maybe the stress of progressively fighting such ungodly creatures with the pass of time, also aided the notion that "gentle deaths" were not required if in time Demons got more and more hideous as the pile of corpses started to stack up.
The reason why the delayed blade is harder to pull out is because there meant to tear up a person's internal organs when you stab them and pull the blade out. However, some innards might catch might snag on the blade, causing it to become stuck.
I would suggest redoing the tests with a pig carcus like they do in forged in fire. Or at least a close substitute to better get a feel against an actual body with bones. The thing with actual serrations is that they're designed to get through tougher cuts. Extreme serrations will do the same, but open the potential for bleeding even more because of the jagged wound it'll create. A watermelon just doesn't give enough of a fight back to really show what serrations can do.
Katana weren't really designed as a piercing blade, though. If you look at Japanese armor designs they are intended to block slashing blows rather than piercing attacks. Instead Inoske's swords remind me a lot of European sword breaker designs--the idea is to get your opponents blade caught in the jagged ridges of the blade--then snap it off. Not sure if breaking his blade with rocks would really help with that tho...
3:08 it does have a problem with taking it out but in the middle of tryna kill somebody you have to have the adrenaline and anger to help you pull it out like inosuke does. Not to mention when you stab it in like that the more you try to pull out the more it can hurt the person's insides.
Thank you other commentary minions. You've allowed me to practice my inner Lord Inosuke to perfection! And for some reason, THAT REALLY PISSES ME OFF!!!!!!!
I think it makes sense that Inosuke's sword is serrated is because of his breathing and fighting style, and in one of the Beast Breathing Fangs he actually uses his sword like a saw
It’s purpose is for fighting demons and it’s meant to be used as a saw since stronger demons have really tough necks but it can also slice which makes it perfect for removing demons heads.
Actually, piercing with inosuke's blade is more efficient. Well yes, it's hard to take out but it just gives him a advantage on gripping demons and if he pierces a demon then it'll do more damage
It should be noted that melons are not the greatest comparison to human skulls, as they are far softer and less dense, making it easier to cut and peirce.
I always imagined that inosuke’s swords were more like “flint-napped” weapons. Basically, like when obsidian shards were hit with rocks to create arrowheads or knives.
The thing about the serrated katana is the only time I’ve heard of something similar is a serrated long sword, which the nobility of Europe would make specialized swords which were serrated, so that when someone would try to grab the sword to stop a swing (happened a lot more than you think) it would cut his hand. Unfortunately this would deny the user the ability of the murder stroke.
Keep in mind, against a melon, his swords might cut through but when there is clothing involved, things will go very differently. Heck, even sharpened plastic swords will cut through melons but against any bit of fabric, they might not cut through.
The problem is you’re using it as a katana. Use it as a saw, axe, and a one-segment whip all at the same time and it shreds like at 2:01. The extra piece could be the difference in tearing a demon apart
I feel like the issue would come with the hardening of the sword. Getting rid of the harder parts makes the sword way more flexible and could lead to the sword cutting wrong and getting damaged.
ive wondered that too, it would take ALOT of skill to slice through somthing with a blade like that so Inosuke is always at a disadvantage. While yes he does have beast breathing the main source of in comes from the blade itself breathing techniques are really just somthing to make the sword more durible and sharper.
The reasoning for the divets isn’t just because of making, “more pain,” but also because you’re not meant to pull the blade out. You’re meant to rip his blades out, or saw your way out. Inosuke has so much strength neither would be an issue for him.
While the sword can cut through a watermelon if it were trying to slice trough bone or even cloths it would get stuck and you'd most likely get disarmed.
No... he actually explains that his sword are like that because like a beast claws, they are meant to shred and tear. Which goes perfectly well with his beast breathing technique.
His swords are meant to do damage, along with his crazy strength they are better. Just harder to master. IRL a seraded blade would do more damage just less hasty
1:40 BOY WHAT ARE YOU DOING!? NEVER CUT TOWARDS THE FORWARD LEG!!! Anybody watching the video. Never cut towards the forward leg, it is preached against in the swordsmanship of Japan and Europe.
It is impractical not to mention could potentially damage the overall strength and integrity of the blade. It's like taking pillars from the base of a skyscraper and hoping those don't cause a complete collapse. Especially because in the actual manga he makes the serrations crudely via rock and it isn't forged that way. So Inosuke's swords are fundamentally inferior to a normal katana both for their strength and cutting ability. The glaring flaw about this mach test here is that the areas between the serrations should not have sharpened edges, as it does not in the manga. Therefore Inosuke's swords only have a cutting edge on 60% of the blade surface making them a vastly inferior cutter in reality whereas in this test they have a sharpened edge even in the gaps where voids should be. His blades are closer to a medieval sword breaker than a barbed katana. Though ultimately it is fictional and anime bullshit has no limitations lol. The real reason a serrated blade is hard to remove from a piercing attack is that it gets latched onto hard bones. It doesn't matter how strong or wild you are, trying to break a bone by pulling on it with an already structurally compromised blade will leave you with nothing but a hilt and a really mad demon.
If you think of it like a saw or a mining grinder, you begin to see the effects of notches. With serrated edges, you can saw through your target with the nitches actually digging into the target. Same with the stabbing, sorta. When the larger areas are cut by the outward jutting areas, the inward areas do not actually have to be cut seemingly saving you a little bit of the force you'd use in the piercing motion.
Two things. 1: when it comes to demons, you don't wanna be gentle with them. Serrations don't cut, they RIP AND TEAR until there is nothing left. And 2: anyone else have trouble matching the voice to the mustache? They both sounded 10 years younger than I expected.
Inosuke’s blade is serrated for a reason, it’s for his breathing style, the blades are supposed to represent fangs. A good thing that shows the swords use is in the Entertainment District Arc when he uses 9th fang to chop off Daki’s head.
I'm pretty sure demons do feel pain did you hear how rui's family reacted when he slashed or ripped them like when he ripped his sisters face off that scream sounded perty painful
Also, I think serrated blades were used to break other swords as the opposing blade would get trapped and snap in the serrations, not used in the anime, but a cool concept
