I do recall advice my grandad gave me, a mechanic and workshop foreman for over 40 years, 1. Never rev up an engine and then shut it off. 2. Leave an engine to idle for a few seconds or up to a minute (longer if towing or doing heave work loads) before shutting off (saves the turbo and prevents oil starvation, also settles down high temperatures) 3. On an automatic, put into neutral, then put on the hand brake (parking brake for our USA chums) and then put into park. (Stops loading and strain on the transmission)

On my Toyota you can actually just buy the boots so you don't have to replace the whole coil. One of mine was pretty brittle so when I pulled off the boot a chunk of plastic from the coil broke off. I just plastic welded it back together because I was too cheap to buy a new coil and it works fine.

This reminds me of the proctigist surgeon who decided he wanted a new trade, so he decided to become a mechanic, the instructor gives him a test, When he was done with the car he gets in and starts it up, it runs perfectly, the instructor said he passed the test, but he was super impressed that he rebuilt the motor through the tailpipe.

Learned a trick when I worked at Nissan. Through that gap in the intake the coil will come out as a whole. Spin it around so the connector part faces the back and it’ll come out. It’s tight for sure but it’ll make it.

I was thinking that taking the air intake would be easier but after reading a few comments it sounds like it's more of pain in the ass to remove the air intake just for the coils.

When the "book" or someone says it has to be done this way my brain immediately begins to question the logic. Just because it's challenging doesn't mean you can't and a good challenge is way more satisfying when accomplished. Do not forget to have yourself (family unit also) a great new year 👊

When I were a 'prentice back in te day training in a big company, there was the way they taught total idiots to do the job, that was foolproof, and needed to be. And there were all the 'guidance of wise men' understanding that enabled one to do it faster if one knew how. Disassembling/reassembling those coils is for wise men only.
@CouchMan88
@CouchMan88 Год назад
Same on my 99 Sienna. Book says you have to pull the intake manifold. I did it without it. Definitely tight but I think there is more room than on this car. If you are doing the plugs it is more difficult because you have to get an extension to fit. Luckily Toyota put the coils on the front three cylinders and just runs a wire to the rear so coil replacement is super easy.

Obviously I like your video's... I keep watching them. 🙂 Your comment about billable hours reminded me of thoughts I've had. I work in a CNC Lathe shop. For 5 years I was the estimator. To make it simple it's time on our machines (the type of CNC determines the cost per hour) + Material + Any outside ops + Markup = Price to charge the customer. Obviously our intent is to be competitive yet make a reasonable profit. Trying to prove that our price is real turns out to be a fools errand (though I hear people think it can be done). Time on the machine is important... it's how we schedule for several weeks of production and not over-promise / under-deliver. But the actual cost of that time has so many possible variables it's not possible to account for all. You would literally have to add the cost of trying to know to the cost of the job and you will always have a moving error rate. In the end how you charge needs to accomplish a few things. Be competitive enough to get work. Get paid enough to cover the cost and earn enough profit to make it all worthwhile and to re-invest in the company. If you create a pricing system that can accomplish that then that's a pretty decent system. Too many times I watch people spend time worrying how "accurate" their pricing system is and chase weird avenues that are fruitless, have variation they don't know about, and they fiddle around thinking they can fix it when usually they simply make it more complex without any improvement or they make it worse.
@steann1

.. and you also have to add in the cost of the person who is costing the job.. .. headache..😵‍💫

Actually, you could get a new coil to fire through the boot as well, because it will seek the closest possible path to ground and when it is disconnected from the plug it will go through the boot to the head. Also you said the plugs were new, but you didn't check them for gap- a plug with too much gap will also force the spark to find a different path to ground. ( Don't rely on the skill of a previous mechanic). But, if the customer is OK with all new coils, then it is a good insurance against future problems.
@sparksalot4950

@oldschool1993

Well, I've learnt something today, with those coils coming apart like that. I know that we don't have the touchy feely feedback of feeling them click back together for that proper connection. As a former 4wder, when I see you fit those first 2 clamps on the exhaust, straight away I could see that they could get damaged by hanging lower than the muffler in an off road adventure, instead of clamping them on from the side as with the 3rd clamp. I wouldn't know if this jeep goes off road at all, but that is how I think if I'm fitting parts.

I truly don’t understand why Nissan made most of their VQ-series V6 hard to work on. Toyota is known for doing this to their V6 engines well with the intake manifold covering one cylinder bank. Why is Honda the only one of them that don’t design their intake manifold like this?

Their partnership with Renault. Ever worked on a Renault? It's like taking up gynaecology! So much of that Nissan stinks of French.

Guess? Because engineers don't have to work on what they design.

When it comes to firing the parts cannon, call me a battleship. If that Nissan intake is coming off, all spark plugs and ignition coils are going to be replaced! Parts are cheap, my time is expensive.
