Can it be saved? Wobbly, weathered, moldy deck restoration

When my wife and I moved into our house a few years ago, we were advised that the deck was too far gone, that it wouldn't be possible to save it. Fast forward a few years, and I still hadn't dealt with it yet. But some research on the web suggested that there might be life in those weathered boards yet. Here's my wife's and my attempt to save our old deck.

I’d like to have a beer or two with you. Back to your video though - unlike some of the other much… longer videos, which had me overthinking, which leads to procrastination - which I’m good at. I watched your short video, and thought 💭 this guys like me, even admits his mistakes. The gist is, ya make feel like I can do this, without breaking the bank and/or my back - thanks 😊

We have 15 years cedar that wasn’t maintained the last 9 years...pretty similar situation. We sand it all and choose oil stain to help to preserve the wood ....some lumber wasn’t in right condition and we just flip it as the other side was in pretty good condition. : )

Thank you very much Piotr on both counts! Hopefully will be publishing more videos than usual for a little bit here... And for the record, the timelapses on this one made my PC want to melt. In one place I had a 4K GoPro clip set to 999, nested it, set that one to 999, and nested it again to speed it up while preserving the sound... 😬 😂

Im happy you chose a darker stain in the end (the red one reminded me very much about "Falu Rödfärg" - a very typical paint here in sweden, not for use on decks tho) and The end result looks good my friend! Thumbs up for both the work you put in and the video you shared!

I’m redoing parts of my deck like you are and your tips are awesome where did you get those brackets for your railings I’m trying to use less wood and more metal because of rot?

I have redone the decks on each of my last 3 homes and cant think of a time when I didn't regret the stain I chose. Every stain seems to make the the wood look orange, red, or yellow. If you try to pick a sealant that is clear so you can get that beautiful natural wet wood look, there is no UV protection and the wood tarnishes extremely quickly. Very frustrating!

Good job . A lot of work. What does the under side look like? All the dirt and chemicals that ran down, in between deck boards. Would be all over joists and on anything stored down there. In summary, 2 story decks are a pain.

Thank you! For the underside, a little paint did get on an outdoor storage chest we have down there, but not too bad otherwise. The paint must be thick enough that it doesn’t drip through like normal stuff might. 🤷‍♂️

All that hard work and I fear that paint's condition now. It never stays on because the water in and out of those wood fibers will never give it a chance.

Solid stains tend to peel like paint, making the next refinishing a real pain. Most go with semi-transparent stain (which doesn't peel) for that reason.

couldn't you just pressure wash the solid stain off with a pressure washer?

@@randyman8984 It's not that simple. If you wash it all off, then you have "paint" chips everywhere. If you don't wash it all off, then the new stain will look like ass b/c it'll be visible where you stained over bare wood vs. existing stain (difference in height). And then both the old stain and new stain will peel eventually, rinse and repeat.

@@randyman8984 I don't know if a paint stripper would work on solid stain, but I do know that paint strippers are hazardous and toxic AF, and using them is an extra step that's not necessary with non-solid stains. Why would you invite the hassle of a solid stain when there's a simpler alternative (non-solid stain)? But it seems like you have your heart set on solid stain, so, good luck.

@@michaelbluejay oh I was asking because on my deck I did a dark solid stain 3 years ago and now it looks like crap and needs to be redone.. I'm trying to figure out how to get it off, big mistake on my end. I've got a pressure washer I'm going to try to remove it . I definitely agree with you, don't use dark stains

Obviously this deck is rough but IMO never pressure wash a deck directly. The timber will expand and split. It's a real fast way to ruin a good deck. You can get attachments for pressure washers that gently scrub the wood. Blasting unsealed timber with over 2000psi of water is a bad idea.

It actually held up pretty well. There were some chips after a couple years but was still solid overall when we sold the house.

We really sweated over whether we should do all the work of adding more spindles and raising/solidifying the railing, but seeing Malcolm jump around on the deck in that video reminded me how good of a choice it was. Now we can all go out there without having to watch him like a hawk and tell him to stay away from the sides. Can just sit and enjoy it. Still love your channel, keep up the good work! Stay safe as well!

What stain did you end up with and how much did it cost you for 2 coats. I wish they made a tan stain or sealer that had good reviews. Reviews are all over the place bud.

That was hard to watch, staining/painting that deck, it looked so nice before. (Everything looks so much nicer on video or pictures, no idea what it looked like in person) You'll probably be redoing the entire deck in about 5 years anyway, so no harm, no foul I guess. Nice work regardless though, you've showed me definitive proof you don't need a 5k psi pressure washer to effectively wash a deck.

Thank you on all counts! It did look pretty weathered and miserable in person; was much more inspiring to look out the patio door later and see something well maintained. And good to hear on the pressure washer! Maybe took longer than a bigger one would have, but this one is tucked away in a tote in a warm place year round, so there’s no gas maintenance or water draining I need to do to leave it in an unheated garage over the winter. No regrets there!

@Andrew Reuter yeah, I'm the world's worst at gas maintenance if it's not something I use weekly. Pressure washer gets the brunt end of that abuse.

To each their own... but this is a perfect example of how people fuck up their decks. I'm a deck restoration professional and I've seen it countless times. You did all that work to get it to raw wood and then you painted your deck with Behr garbage from Home Depot? That stain will chip and peel in 12 months and next time around you won't be able to pressure wash it. You'll have to sand all of that off.it will take forever. Never stain your deck solid. Always use oil based stain. Do a follow up if you don't believe me.

Yep I learned the hard way never to use solid stains or paints on decks. Now I have peeling everywhere. Semi transparent from now on.

What do you recommend, I'm getting ready to start on mine... I believe the last owner used what you described because it is peeling and alot of the deck the stain has completely worn off... if you have a video on RU-vid I would like to check it out so put up your link... thanks much appreciate any help...

@@fredfrost9874 I'd recommend a quality oil based stain. Armstrong Clark makes a good one. You'll have to strip your deck first to get back to raw wood. If your railings are already stained with that solid don't strip them. Will take forever. Give them a good power wash with the white tip and get anything that's flaking off. After it dries grab a palm sander and go over what you can reach. Don't get anal about it. Quick and dirty. Set your alarm for 90 minutes. Anything you can get in that time. Done. Blow it all off or use a hose. After it dries...grab a solid stain for PPG. You're going for a TWO TONE DECK. Look it up. They look great. Stain the railings with a solid color. That was the hard part. For the actual deck look up videos on how to strip decks. If you want the guaranteed way: sand it off with a palm sander. When down to raw wood... apply a coat of oil stain. Beauty of oil based stain is that in two years you can scrub your deck and just put another coat on. Easy peasy. No sanding. No bullshit. Wash. Restain. I have a way of sanding decks that's super fast. Hit me up if you want ndetails
