Can Lakers Win Early Games While Pacing LeBron, Davis? Plus, Rich Paul Nixed LeBron to Warriors?

The Lakers have a bit of a challenge to start the year. They need to get off to a good start, in part because the second half of the season features some difficult stretches, and they'd really like to avoid having to go full tilt in, say, early February just to make sure they get into the postseason. That wears down the battery of the LeBron James/Anthony Davis duo before the playoffs start, which shrinks the team's ability to advance.
So a little wiggle room would be nice, which they can get from a high-end start to the year.
On the other hand... James and Davis are coming off the Olympics, and A.D. admitted they might need to ease into things a little. What does that mean? Hard to say, but at the least it implies the team will have to moderate what Davis and James are doing early in the season, whether in training camp, or in the first couple of weeks. What kind of impact will that have?
It gets to the tricky nature of this Lakers season, one where every bit of upside needs to be leveraged effectively in order for the team to reach it's maximum potential and have a shot with the most elite teams in the league. So how do the Lakers manage this? Is it really a LeBron/AD question, or something more related to the supporting cast? Rui Hachimura taking another step. Austin Reaves avoiding the slow start that plagued him last year. Dalton Knecht making an impact as a rookie, Max Christie stepping up after signing a new contract, and of course D'Angelo Russell playing like the guy who is hard to trade (because he's playing too well).
Meanwhile, how did a flicker of talks between the Lakers and Warriors around LeBron get shut down?

SEGMENT 2: How much pressure is on the supporting cast?

There's no such thing as pacing yourselves in the West.... Go full throttle as long as you can.... Then let fatigue/injuries towards end of the regular season dictate the handling of stars... By then hopefully, your role players are fully deployed in their roles... and you can win a game or 2 even with your star( stars) resting. If one thing you can take away from the Olympics is that talent deficit is not a be all end all in deciding games. A good scheme, team play almost overcame the massive talent deficit w.r.t Team USA. This is where JJ will earn his pay... How he handles the team in Feb, March... with the playoff seeding on the line....!!

I'm sure people don't want to hear this, but if we want to succeed with this team as built, Austin has to be our 6th man and rui our 7th. We should start dlo max vando bron and AD. Hoping max's 3p% gets better. That way max can help hide dlo's defensive inefficiency. Vando can guard too and hide brons lazy regular season defense. AND max and vando are good rebounders for their positions. To me all that team would need is a legitimate backup big. Which I'm hoping wood would be.

THANK YOU! Finally, someone with good basketball knowledge. This front office is awful, all they literally need to do is get a big! Especially with AD being so injury prone and coming off of the Olympics. How hard could that be? Also the obsession of having AR in the starting lineup has to stop! He plays better as a 6th man off the bench! At this point, I'd rather hire you as our GM!

@@Murali_bala13 they had a top 3 record (league wide) once Ham FINALLY started Rui... LBJ straight up called for more Rui in postgame to the media early last year (he never does that, he's usually passive agressive) ... we need SHOOTING, and JJ is the coach. Vando/Vincent energy off the bench to help Knecht (who can score, and will need help defensively) Lo (no D cuz he plays none is the REAL PROBLEM), we gotta move him for a stretch 5 to provide AD with help while maintaining spacing, my preference is Wendell Carter Jr. ... JJ even said it we need a BIG BRUISING CENTER. Orlando was the worst 3pt shooting team in the league last year, they also have 3 centers making 10+ mil, plus defensive guards in Suggs/KCP. Trade them D Lo/1st for Wendell Carter Jr - it's a win/win for both squads.

It's amusing watching people try to finesse a solution to Lebron being 40 years old and how to work around it. You can't. What did last year show us? LBJ is only able to play defense sporadically. LBJ is still great in short spurts, (Olympics), but has zero chance of carrying a team for 100 games. When LBJ is forced to play 35+ minutes, he isn't effective in the 4th quarter. How many games did LBJ take over a 4th quarter last year and lead us to a tough win? LBJ and AD both were completely healthy last year and that is extremely unlikely to happen again. It's going to be a tough year for Lakers fans. Play in is our ceiling; Lottery is our most likely outcome. JJ and Rob will sadly take the blame when in actuality, having a 40 year old "superstar" never gave us a chance.

This may be a silly question boys but why would the Lakers need to pace their two best and highest paid players? Could this be the problem the last 4 years. The Lakers pace puts them in the 7-10 place than they are behind the 8 ball every year in the playoffs. Seems this is not working, you know the definition of 'Insanity". Just asking, not a hater, just taking a logical look at results over the past 4 to 6 years. I sure hope the wonderful, genius, savvy front office stays out of JJ's way. Rob Pelinka does not know as much as JJ.

With AD, it's theoretically an issue for this specific upcoming season, given how he's coming off Team USA, which could require some recovery to avoid fatigue. Otherwise, I don't really consider this a thing with AD during his time with the Lakers. (Certainly not last season, where he played at an extremely high level on both sides of the ball). With LeBron, however, pacing of some kind is just the persistent reality for a player at his age with that mileage. It happened last year, the season before, and will certainly happen this season. Fact of life. And as I've said many times, this certainly complicates the goal of avoiding the play-in. There's a cause and effect in terms of their seeding. Hopefully, the payoff comes in the form of LeBron having the requisite energy for the playoffs. But it's a tenuous balance. Appreciate you watching. AK
