I'd rather wait an extra year or two and miss out on some opportunities... So much time is spent training a nice horse to a high level it is a shame when they are being retired at 6-7-8 years old. I'd much rather start then at 4-5-6 and see them sound into their 20's!

Reining is supposed to be the most demanding on horses after racing. Not a fan of it. Maybe I have got a wrong impression of reining. I hate the low heads and dead dog look. Also quite a few stories of abuse.@@TheCleverCowgirl

It's also a sport that starts horses too young, too fast (The Futurity) and breaks them down by 7 or 8 years old. Good for you for taking your time. I remember yearlings being run into walls to teach them to stop. Yearlings!!! If she grows into that butt, she is so croupe high now, she could hit 15+ hands and I think you said she had Trakehner in her. Those horses don't reach full height until 4 or 5 years old. And yes, I have done reining and dressage into upper levels and found the dressage work was wonderful for the reiners. Dressage horses are taught to move off the outside rein so the turning was never difficult. Have fun!
@joecunningham9501
@joecunningham9501 3 месяца назад
horses are not run into a wall to get them to stop, they're run up close to a wall in order to get them making a long run down and not anticipating a stop. The futurities di not break a horse down by the time they are 7 or 8either. We have several horses (one did reining and cow horse futurities in the same year) and they have remained sound and are now in their senior years. and there are a lot of horses in reining and cow horse that reach 15 hands although many don't. If the mare has trakehner in her it will not help her being a top level reiner and since her rider gets paid for training she will have to compete with open riders who have won millions doing this. It's a nice dream but with the riding the mare will miss following her schedule she will not be broke enough to compete successfully. I'll probably be flamed for this message but you have to be real and see what the experience level will add to the other horses abilities compared to this filly

I watched Scarlett halter training sessions. I used to work with rescue dogs, most in the worst shape or behaviors . One lesson I learned was that being able to see them in the end result was a gift that not everyone has, and you have it. You can see this in Scarlett bc it is there, I see it too. I have no doubt that the two of you together will make this happen.

I find it heartbreaking that so many 'prospects' are broken in body and mind before even reaching maturity. Their bodies are ruined by the process and they are used, abused, pushed beyond the pale into unnatural behaviour and then dumped in the slaughter pipeline and we ALL KNOW yet it continues and these 'trainers' gain and profit. You need to be realistic. CC cannot continue to collect horses without re-homing some of them, and she already has some that will never be able to be successfully re-homed. Once she has successfully re-habbed a horse and positioned it for a good home, she may choose to let it go once the right home is offered - to free up some space and time so she can adopt more horses that need her help.
@ronallen6578
@ronallen6578 3 месяца назад
@@jasperstarr6804 Do you actually believe a viewer is going to tell or suggest to CC what to do?? A suggestion is just that. I started watching her when she first got Scarlett and did her 30 day training. I have nothing invested besides a few donations to offset some costs. I personally mean nothing as do my comments OR wishes. CC is a smart business woman and she will do what's best for ALL of her animals. I'm dumb, but I'm not stupid.

@TheCleverCowgirl
@TheCleverCowgirl 9 месяцев назад
It really depends on the trainer and their level of horsemanship. If they are doing right by the horse and letting them have time off for minor injuries the horses last much longer. But if they are being pushed through injuries to show at some of the big money events they will have a much shorter career. It is a sad reality in many horse sports where money is the motivating factor :(

Too early to tell what disciplines she will excel at, but I think it will become clearer once you progress with her training. Love that you are open to whatever areas of training and future THAT MIGHT SUIT HER. It may be that her coming from a wild background can also have some advantages if nurtured properly. Your doing a great job with her thus far, and she seems to be pretty attached to you, which will go a long way in her training. I also love the fact that you allow her to grow and mature physically and mentally. In my opinion, some of these horses are started too intense and too early based based on where a 2 year old is growth/maturity wise. The risk of injury goes way up when started before they are matured properly.

The reality is that she has not had a living daylights blasted out of her like a lot of her opposition. Given that they start youngsters earlier than even a thoroughbred training would do. You have to wonder how much hammer she has not had to take. Also she has been through the sales ring and through an auction house which has given her some education she’s been gathered from wild HEARD and that’s been a pretty stressful situation. Let’s face it she’s got more underneath her than you give her credit for and you give yourself credit for. She might cost you $25, but I would suspect if she does well you’ll end up getting an offer for her considerably more than that . Also, if she does manage to do well in the show ring then potentially she could be a decent broodmares prospect for somebody looking to bring in a bit more durability into the bloodlines and some fresh genetics.

Well, I was just typing it into the comments when you said it. Typically, it's just easier for the smaller frame horses to do those maneuvers. Compact body mass, easier to adjust position on a dime. I think Scarlet would be an amazing cow horse. She'll have the height to really be above a herd. And for driving cattle, she'd be back on the plains, where she's from....

I have a family member that competes nationally in NRHA competition. How fun. I hope you do well.

Good luck with your plan. I can’t wait to follow her progress! She has such a scopey stride I think she could be a three day eventer. Maybe an upper level Pony Club horse. I’ve known several mustangs that have been awesome Pony Club horses.

I think so too! If she gets as big as I think she might get she will be a pretty silly looking reiner :)

Oh, this is so funny, I'm also doing something similar, I am training my $175 shelter Malinois Maxine to compete as a "blue dog" (a blue dog is a spayed, neutered, unpapered or a mixed breed) for her Brevet (beginning level) in French Ring dog sports. Hopefully we will compete this fall but realistically I will have to push the time forward one year to 2025. Usually, ring sport handlers compete with papered Malinois with huge price tags and paid coaches, trainers or both. I understand your drive and I hope you achieve your dream. PS. Check into Matt Mills, he loves an underdog. Look at the story of the horse Blue Thunder on his channel.

All my life I have believed that every horse is good for something. The mark of a good trainer is being able to find that thing and make the horse excel in it, whatever it is. I have a very blue collar attitude toward horsemanship. I like basic utility over pampered hothouse flowers. If she has talent in working cattle, that is a useful skill.

A lot depends on her confirmation at age three, doesn’t it? Right now she’s looking pretty good for a reining prospect.
