As a wrestler in the 70's/early 80's, I learned that there two types of being in shape. There is just being in shape and there is being in wrestling shape. The two are worlds apart. As a senior in HS, I looked forward to the end of practices when we would totally exhaust the underclassmen with leading of the grass drills; especially the standing squat thrusts where we would "hit it"(squat thrust) over and over again until WE got tired and most of the underclassmen were toast afterwards. Back then, we were able to wrestle in sweat suits during practices. Even the Army Basic Training I did in '82 had nothing on our wrestling practices/grass drills when it came to physical training. It takes a certain type of mentality to be a wrestler. You have to have that "animal" instinct and not be afraid of getting hurt, hurting someone (but not try to injure them) or going beyond what you thought was your limit. One of my favorite things to do other than wrestle at practice was to climb the wall(peg board) in the gym and rope climbing with just the arms.
@@beau.bartlett before they try a Penn State workout, you may want to suggest to them (for their sake) to go to a local HS and try one of their wrestling workouts first. If (and that is a big if) they make it thru one of the HS workouts, then they can take the big leap into trying to do a Penn State workout...😎.
@@amck72 If you have the opportunity and are able to do it, the best hand grip strength that I did (made my grip like a vice grip) was to catch chickens in a modern barn (200,000 chickens) for about 3 hours straight a night. You catch 4 in one hand and 3 in another and hand them up or down to truckers to put in cages. You do this for a summer and you will have the strength of a vice grip that nobody can break that grip. I did that my junior and Sr. year of HS. You will also get very strong legs, back and forearms and also build up your lung (wind) endurance. You can't be afraid of pain because the chickens will scratch you and make you bleed while you are carrying them to the trucks. Here is just a little example of what I'm talking about. If you really want to take it to the next level, catch double hands (7 chickens in each hand) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gV76qn3te_Q.html
@jcool9647 As a judo green belt and Kyokushin karate green belt, I realized going into varsity wrestling shape was actually very similar to the drills and training we used to do in judo and karate a lot for conditioning in between tournaments. I had the most fun at my judo tournaments. I did pretty good at those. More than I can say for the karate and wrestling tournaments. I think I was just built better fit for judo and karate, and long distance running, more than just wrestling. Don't get it wrong, I love watching guys high level go at it, it's entertaining and wild to watch how fast they are in person, but I still prefer judo and karate.
Beau, I need to preface this by saying you are a good human, always smiling fun kid….But if you want to have a chance at winning it all this year, you need to get MORE AGGRESSIVE….A controlled mean….At Senior Nationals you were shooting from a mile out, and advertising your shot, at Oregon State you should have drubbed that kid. Stop giving your opponent too much credit….Start going after these kids….get mean, stop waiting for a scramble situation.
@@triadknightswrestling1660Yeah really. Either you're TOO young or TOO old to get married. There's never a time NOT too young to do something if you're old enough. Also, I didn't know he was only 2 years younger than me. That makes me feel not so accomplished. My only complaint with Bartlett is that he doesn't go at Real Woods hard enough. He's too cautious and so always loses by a point or two because of that.
Watch u wrestle….lol My point was, make a LONGER video, AND be more aggressive at wrestling. I love the fact ur always upbeat, always smiling and laughing….U two look great together. Spent 60 years in State College, just moved to where it’s warmer….im recovering from a vax injury….i had 2 blood clots pump thru my heart. I’m the most hardcore PSU Wrestling fan there is, and typically listen to Byers while watching as many on TV as I can. I watch a lot of podcasts too….Hate that Pyles is such an Iowa Homer….lol. Have fun at the ALL STAR event tomorro night. 👍👍
