My two boys started fighting, and drew blood. I ended up separating them. They are in a large C&C cage with a grid between them and they seem to be OK and actually happier now. I never had the problem before with girls!

I've got two scars from piggie bites and I can testify to :DO NOT PUT YOUR HAND NEAR THEM WHEN THEY'RE ANGRY". I was on a iv drip in A&E for an entire week due to infection taking over my body. They only had a FIGHT FIGHT once and it was bad. There was holes in the sides and Jr had his eyelid bite. They're now fine, regularly teeth chatter and rumble strut but they're happy and sleep together. They act like boys do, they have stayed together and I dont like to separate unless its absoulsty necessary.

Remember when Nails was new to you and he was so sad and sick? But he lived to fight another day 😀

I spent so much money on vet bills when I had males. One bit a pig's leg to where he needed staples, I don't think any of their ears were unscarred, multiples abscesses, and a lost eye. The problems came from females nearby. After putting their cages in a different room, they didn't fight as much. I have 3 females now and one is in her own cage next to the other two because she just doesn't get along with them. They seem happy with the current arrangement.

I find that pigs who get along but squabble sometimes do best when you increase the cage size!

I fight with my roommate sometimes too. And though I don’t bite him (perhaps the thought may have crossed my mind a time or two lol) it’s good to have our space. My rabbits, if they all 5 hang out in the same play area together for too long, they’ll start picking on one another. So, I set up play areas in different rooms so there’s enough space for everyone to be out doing what they want without being on top of each other. And OMG Nails, you’re just so adorable!

I love whenever you kiss those piggies and it was so tender when you asked if he was okay. 💗 Thanks for all of your education!

Thank you for sharing this information and video. I have two male piggies, a 3.5 y/o and a 5.5 y/o, that have been together in a pen for months to years. I adopted them about 6 weeks ago and they did well until the past few days. They have fought twice, the second time was longer, rolling around in the pen and my elder piggie ended up with a small cut on his lower eyelid. I separated them for about 18 hours, then put them back in the pen with a divider. They can see each other, chitter together, but not get to each other. I am hoping to keep it like this for another day, and then try again to bring them back together. Your comments and suggestions for wound care and living situations for the piggies are very much appreciated. These are my first piggies, so I am green. God bless you and all the piggies you help!!

We have the perfect pair, Hugo and Luigi, and they both have bitten each other once in different times. Then we had a talk with our exotic vet who has long history with piggies and she told me there is no need for separation yet at least cause I was so confused since clearly Luigi is the boss and that is fine with Hugo and I know them but I was so worried if that is always the case that when they bite they need to be separated and there is no other way. But I am so happy we didn't separate them then and got that tip from our experienced vet as what we should do and actually there haven't been any bites after that. 🥰 And I've never even seen them showing any other aggression towards each other than usually Luigi telling Hugo to go away and sometimes rumblestrutting to Hugo. 🤷🏼‍♀️ So yep, I was pretty confused. 🤨 But I am happy there are people (like you and also like our vet) who knows what they are saying and doing so you can learn more from them when you are in unfamiliar situation! 🤩

My boys got into a fight about 4 months ago. Fred definitely seems to enjoy bothering his brother Fritz but prior to that they lived pretty well together. They did argue over dominance several times within the 9 months that I had them, but I always paid attention and it was never aggressive. The only thing I thought was weird was that for some reason Fred always mounts Fritz from the face. That was ultimately the problem. I'm assuming while Fred did that, Fritz bit him. I couldn't tell then, but Fritz did bite Fred on the private part. I took him to the hospital and after staying over for a night and some meds and syringe feeding for a week Fred was back to normal without any stitches needed. I immediately separated them, and tried to do some neutral territory meetings during feeding time after Fred was feeling better. Those went fine other than Fred would eventually start trying to mount Fritz and I would get nervous. I tried the 3rd cage with the divider, but when they were that close Fred would constantly chew on and pull at the cage. It never looked aggressive, he would just sniff around and try to figure out a way to his brother. I was concerned about his teeth so I had to stop that set up. The best set up that I have found for them is 2 cages each set next to each other with cardboard in between all but a small section of the cages where they can still actually see each other. This is the best way for me to keep Fred from chewing and pulling on the cage often. That being said, since this happened about every week or 2 I switch my guinea pigs from their set of cages. I started this initially after Fred healed and before I put them together because I wanted them to stay familiar with each other's scents. I know Fred still wants to be with Fritz because if I get busy and wait too long to switch my boys Fred starts getting more antsy and bits on the cage. Once I switch them he calms down almost immediately, and I tend to see him laying down wherever Fritz spent a lot of time. Up until a couple weeks ago I wasn't sure if Fritz really cared either way, or if it was better to keep them apart so that Fred wasn't always annoying Fritz. I had a hid set up with an open 2nd level. I didn't realize that if they went on the 2nd level and stood they were tall enough to get over the cage because neither had ever tried before. I was watching TV in my living room and out of the corner of my eye, I see white, brown, white, brown. I actually look at the cage closest to me and sure enough white, brown, white, brown. They were chasing each other and weeking. My guess is that Frits climbed up to the 2nd floor of the hide and realized he could get over the cage. I had just switched them so this was the first time that Fritz had been on that side with that set up. I let them go for a little and then sure enough Fred mounted Fritz from the face. Fritz got away and they started chasing each other around the cage again. When I got a chance I directed Fred to the part of his set of cages that Fritz wasn't in and closed it. Then I rearranged the other set of cages so that Fritz couldn't do it again and put him back. I really do want to put them together, and I think they want to be together. I am nervous about what will happen when I'm not home or even when I am home. I was in the house when Fred got bit. I tried your basic blood clotter for nails, but when it wouldn't stop, that was when I got scared. It turned out obviously that I just didn't put it where the actual wound was, but because of that we took him to the emergency vet hospital. On top of that we had to go to 2 separate places before we got to a place that would and could actually treat him. Of course this happened around 10p so my options were limited. Really the entire situation was fairly traumatic. I guess I want to know, am I being overly cautious because of my feelings? Do you guys think they can and want to go back to each other? How should I go about trying to get them back together? Or is there anything else I can do to rebuild that bond? Like I said before I only had my boys for about 9 months when this happened. In the time that I had them they argued over dominance 3-4 times. I did get them from a coworker who could no longer take care of them. As far as I understand she had them from the time they were a few months old and never had any issues. When I got them, they were about 2 years old. I don't know how often they argued over dominance prior to me getting them. My coworker ended up being allergic to them and did not spend much time handling them due to that. I was just thinking as I was typing this out. Is it possible that this was just an age issue and they may grow out of it? Should I possibly approach this like a new bonding experience to see if that helps? I am a first time guinea pig owner, but I made sure to do tons of research. Shout out to you Scotty. I learned so much so fast in the weeks before I got my guinea pigs. I felt so prepared, and after a year of working with them, Fritz is completely comfortable being handled. Fred let's me cut most of his toe nails in 1 go and even got comfortable with me holding him again within 3 weeks of his injury and me being required to syringe feed him, which Fred was definitely over with after about 2 days. I have seen such growth in their trust of me and even their willingness to move about the cage when others are over. My mom and I even joke now that they will sometimes just practice their scurrying when we walk by because it is clear that they are not putting in the effort to really run like they do when they are scared or surprised. Thank you Scotty for all your help, and thank you guys for taking the time to read about my situation and help if u can!

I’ve to keep my boys apart cause from day one when they were able to get along to where they could be in the same cage but my one boy doesn’t really like the other one even if the other ones looking in at him from outside his cage he will teeth chattering at him. My first set when I was in highschool my girls were the perfect pair on day one when we got them then.

All 4 of my boys are side by side when we adopted them from shelter they were surrendered as a single pig and never got along with others. 2 of my girls are side by side for the same reason but the other 2 girls just turning a yr old this month are together in a Midwest and had moments but then see them sleeping together in a dome. They would be lost without each other

A year ago, I received two Guinea pigs as a gift . It was an American Shorthair brother and sister. I learned that they can't be kept together. I settled them separately. They whistled and bit the cages. I found people on the Internet who don't want their Guinea pigs and got them two Abyssinian babies. the girls got along well, and the boys started fighting. My vet recommended neutred them. But they still fought. Then I put brothers with their sisters. They were very happy. It was very touching. We are all very happy now. Hi from Israel, Scotty!

My girls were bonded and had a third piggie that was the buffer that the bossy piggie loved following because they grew up together. The third and lowest piggy was always bosses around but once the buffer piggie passed away, I had to separate them because the bossy piggie immediately starts ripping the other pigs’ hair out and constantly dominates her in every way. I’m too worried that she’s being bullied and not just dominated. The submissive piggy was a rescue and already had a tough life before we helped her and she loves being separated by a cage middle. Guess I will keep them separated.

Oh my baby Nails!! Piggie Smalls is a naughty boy. This is a tough call, the fact that they'll lay together and eat together yet have fights with biting... I don't know, I think I'd rather seperate them, seems like to much stress on them, like walking in eggshells all the time. p.s. seeing Nails all big and fluffy and happy really makes me get the warm & fuzzies

Yeah. I don't have harmony within my pair and I constantly worry for them(as of now I haven't seen any fighting, only scuffles here and there. The sad thing is that one is territorial and the other is scared of him). People keep telling me that as long as they don't fight they're okay, but I sometimes wonder since they're not in harmony with one another if its best just to divide them

Sadly, two of my boy piggies’ ears were torn in half. Brownie, the third youngest but largest piggy’s ears both were torn in half maybe by biting. Sprinkles, the twin to a girl second oldest but small’s one ear was also bitten in half. Mousse-Merengue, the second youngest is possibly the one who did this. Most likely, the boys’ ears won’t heal.

8:20 that’s exactly what happened to mine! They used to groom eachother and love eachother and were brothers from pet store too (I rescued all my others but couldn’t help myself as the cages were filthy there) but after a few months they broke skin and fought so I separated a C&C now they lay next to eachother on the other side of the cage! They won’t let me cover with a towel either they’ll burrow to see eachother again! But they just can’t be together without fighting. I feel bad having them separate and have thought about trying one of them with my herd of 3 boys but I just don’t know. The funny thing is the two boys are Frodo and Sam and it’s as if the ring of power ruined there friendship like when it happened for a bit in the movie 😂 part of me hopes they’ll be okay again since I had 2 baby boys fight for the same reason before and broke skin a few times now they’re inseparable again like that other story you told about your piggies. Ones the big chubby bully and ones the shy slim plump boy haha!

Thank you so much for this video!! I have 2 boys (recently neutered) and 3 girls in the same cage (after surgery of course). It’s mom, dad, and kids (had an oops moment) Their cage used to be smaller but they got along fine. Recently I moved them to a spare bedroom so they can have the whole floor space and my 2 boys have been fighting nonstop. Had to separate the boys because the son bit the dads ear and there’s a big chunk missing now as well as bite marks on dads rear end. Since the separation everything has been peaceful, I even have them set up side by side, but I was really thriving for that “harmonious” herd. Feel bad that it took getting them neutered to figure out it doesn’t always work out that way. Expensive lesson for me and my boy 😬😭 If anyone has any extra advice to share it’s all appreciated!

Our two boys were from the same litter and hav been living together for over 14 months, now all of a sudden they are constantly rumbling and humping each other, not sure what is going on, one of them must have gotten bitten and ended up with a lump under their chin, took them to the vet and he is on antibiotics to get rid of that, but its not really working that well so I guess it will probably have to be lanced and extract unfortunately. I have rearranged the cage to ensure all piggies have access to everything without going close to the other, hoping that will help…

My boars were living together for over three weeks, all fine.. Then I woke up with a long long teeth chattering, I got scared and separated them bc I needed to leave them alone. Now I'm a little scared to put them together again or just split the cage in half.

My boys sometimes squabble with each other and theirs rumble strutting but they have never bit one another. Seems more of an argument.

I have 2 guys piggies that are one year old each. Her name is princess and the male is gizmo. They have gotten into fights 3 times and he has injured her near her neck and front part of body. I have separated them. I am not sure if I can ever feel safe putting them back in the same cage. this just happened to me today on Sunday 21/5/23. A few days ago i noticed fighting and today was the last straw and today the third fight happened. She has been injured. I have put them in separate rooms for her safety as my priority and now as im not going to put her safety at risk and not put either of them in a dangerous situation where he can injure her 2 more times. I'm going to keep them seperated for a while. But am very sad because I love her so much and I never wanted her to get hurt. I have not owned guinea pigs in a very long time . I've had them for just a bit longer than 3 weeks. I really hope she is alright she seems quite lonely now that they have been seperated. So i cuddle her during the day and comfort her. she also has mange and mites like gizmo does and maybe need to see the vet in a months time if things don't improve in a few weeks time. I am concerned for her as she is sick and he is sick. I have already spent $161.20 on the vet. It was $65.00 each for the 2 guinea pigs consultation there is no bargain deal where I can get 2 looked at for same price. I paid $65.00 for the 2 for the consultation. The cream for the mange and mites was $32.00 The vet said bring them back in a month if things don't improve and she checked their heart rates. The lady said its just luck of the draw if they get it and that its common in guinea pigs to get mange and mites. I truly am quite sad about this as I am on the disability support pension and it is getting costly. I don't know how I'm going to afford to pay another vet bill in a month's time as I am already on a tight budget and struggling with Money at the moment. The money i had came out of my savings and now it is all gone thanks to the cost of the vet which is extremely ridiculous they are not even the size of cats and dogs and the vet is charging me an arm and a leg to get them fixed up and looked at. I am keeping them as my pets but I really hope I find a way to afford the best vet bill as I'm deeply struggling and all my savings are gone now. So yeah.😢😮

I keep a bottle of saline solution for cleaning contact lenses and it works really well for flushing booboos. Only had to do it once, but it works really well!

My boy got a plug bite on his back and his ear bit through….I separated them and little buddy was healed in a week. I cleaned wounds daily and put neo on it

I have 2 boys one 21/2 yrs the other about 1 yr ,I tried putting them together but it didn’t go well I put a divider in between Midwest cage for now & they are doing good and will eat next to each other by the divider & even lie down next to each other from the divider but put them together & yikes 😬 but if u didn’t know & saw them right next to each other you would think they get along great.

I use bactine on my goats ears when they get infected from their tags. This only happens when they first get them, but this year I didn't have any problems with it

My Guinea pigs are in a different cage one is on top and the other is on the bottom but the reason is cuz we went on a trip so they where separated and when we up them back together they fought and pulled fur off of each other but we had to put one on the bottom cuz they would chatter their teeth and bite the change when they where right next to each other

Hey everyone, just some ideas during this Covid virus. I took birdseed and threw it in some dirt and let it grow for a bit and then cut it and let it dry. Some hay! Foraging is great too. Scott & Saskia have great vids on that. Also tractor supply has timothy hay cubes that’ll keep you going for a good while. They are wrapped in green and about $20. It’s compressed so there is a lot. Keeping veg like 🥕& celery can be kept in water in the fridge. Just a few suggestions since I’m homebound. Aw poor bois! Glad they are getting better.

I have a trio I had to separate. Spencer is 3, Benson is 2 and Elliot is 7 months. Elliot is in puberty and had a falling out with Benny. I tried to rebond them but it didnt work. They teeth chatter and hair raises as soon as they see each other now. I just adopted a submissive 5 year old to bond with my 7 month old. They are currently staying next to each other with a divorce. No aggressive behavior from either. Introducing them on Monday. Fingers crossed!!

I have three males, two are OBSESSED but the oldest doesnt get along with them, they were fine as babies but as they grew, more fights would occur so I Had to separate my babies… I did the mistake of putting my hand out & got bit very deeply ,… i kept it clean never got infection but kept them separated because I didn’t want it to happen to my babies. I tried to re group them a month later with a huge veggie pile and immediately they started to chatter… not good. what can I do? They start chattering immediately as soon as they see or even SMELL him now. I think him biting me made my babies go into overprotective mode …

My guinea pig boys live directly next to each other in separate midwest cages. Orville is thriving in his own territory, but Wilbur is discontent. Wilbur is gnawing on the bars of the cage on the side that touches his brother's cage multiple times a day regardless of if Orville is over there to watch him or not. He has toys, things to chew on, and places to hide, everything identical to his brother, but for some reason he wont stop chewing on the bars. They will lay down on either side of the shared bars and just chill several times a day, Orville will walk over and watch Wilbur rumble-strut for a long while, they will talk to each other occasionally, but if I put them together (even on neutral territory), it's an instant physical fight. Is there a way I can help ease Wilbur's anxiety so he's not chewing on the bars? I've tried every anxiety technique I can find online and nothing has worked. I don't want him ingesting the paint. Please help! Thank you.

My 2 year old Shawn bit my 7 month old brownie right on the nose, they’re both boys brownie is pretty new. I really want them to get along but they can’t even look at each other without teeth chattering :(

Like all animals that live in packs herds or flocks, there will be occasional fighting to assert dominance and maintain order amongst each other. It's perfectly normal. Of course, if your pigs hate each other and are fighting constantly, then yes they should be separated.

Learned the hard way not to separate two guinea pigs with your bare hands. The antibiotics and tetanus vaccine is the least of it. My boy, Hector, damaged a nerve in my finger and now I can't stretch it without intense nerve pain :(

What if the girls do start showing teeth and facing off? Zoey had surgery so they have bee separated because Chloe tends to be a bully with food. Today I gave them floor time together and they were chattering and jumping at each other and showing teeth :( I took Zoey out before any bites happened since she is still recovering.

I bought 2 female guinea pigs about a month ago (they are about 3 months old) and everything was perfect till today. Today they got in a fight, real fight. Fur is flying around, lip is split in a half, neck is bleeding. The cage is big enough, will be even bigger than recommended in a few days. Not sure why this happened and for how long it will be happening....

I have 2 brothers who fight occasionally, I was recommended F10 ointment by our vet ages ago so always keep some on hand (I use it on our Cats too) really easy to use even when a bite has got a bit yucky. Clean it up and smear some on. We're in the UK, so I don't know if its available anywhere else, I'd assume in Europe at least?
