How fast are amateur cyclists compared to WorldTour pros, and is it possible to keep up with the world’s best riders with a little helping hand in the form of a motorbike to draft behind? Ollie went to the UAE Tour, where he rode the stage 2 team time trial route ahead of the pros. Was he able to keep up with the world’s best, and if not, how much faster are they than our own amateur?!

Hi Team, Excellent content from the UAE Tour, I really enjoyed it. I have a crazy ultra-cycling challenge idea for Ollie, Mallorca 312, Tour du Mont Blanc & Tour des Stations, all in the 2023 season. I would go so far as to even double dare him.... It could be some cool content...

Ollie may have been behind a motorcycle, but from the camera shots, I doesn’t look like he was really close enough most of the ride to make the best of it. Not necessarily his fault, but between that and the lack of TT bike and gear, it’s a seriously solid result.

Just started watching but I’m already so excited. Maximum respect to Ollie for having the sheer courage to put himself up against pretty much the entire pro peloton. Even just doing it to see what’s it like takes or because you know others will get a laugh out of it takes courage. I’m appearing on stage in a ballet at the age of 47 (and current weight of 94kg) in May for similar reasons. The prospect appalls me but I feel the comedic value is too high to reject it. To make it even better, I’m a western male teacher in a Japanese girls’ school. It’s gonna be seamless. Seamless!

Hang on.... the pro's average power was 394w. Ollie's was 281w according to Strava. Surely the pro's average power was 40% higher, not the "almost 25%" Ollie claimed?

In a normal amateur Time Trial, the riders start time is determined by when they registered. You always hope that there are a few riders that start a few minutes before you, are slower than you, so you can pass them. You also hope that there isn't any Category 1 rider starting right behind you. Getting passed a mile or two after you start is a big kick in the ego, and can cause you to end up with a slower time, because you feel defeated.

You forgot to mention the team aspect. Mates cheering each other on, coordinating drafting positions, etc. This is a major motivation factor that is challenging to recreate when by yourself. That road looks like something straight out of Mario Cart.

The biggest thing I've noticed even from the 80's, top amateur vs Pro rider is endurance. Anything over 2 hours the pro will win! Give both the same bike.

Well Ollie, considering that you did not have a team riding with you, your bike is just a stock bike compared to what they ride, you don’t ride as much as they do and don’t have the same handling skills, and yet they only managed to pull away two and a half minutes… it is not too bad really. I think it speaks volumes of the great shape you are in. Yes that is a lifetime difference in pro terms. But in simple mortal terms it’s not bad at all!

I know how fast the pros were compared to me. I did my time trailing in the mid-1990's and my PB for the U18R course was 1:04 it's a 25 mile TT with small undulations and you always have a cross wind. A few years earlier Chris Boardman won the 25 mile 1991 national championship on the U18R course in 48 minutes something. And that was the end of my dreams.
