Team tournaments with bigger prize pools will never work. As soon as something like this gets announced there will be one giga team that no one could ever beat, like, vaxei, criller, maliszewski, mrekk or something. The same team would win every single tournament for years with no competition. Unlike CSGO or League there isn't a possibility to come up with some game plan that can shift a game, you're just gonna get giga fucked
I never truly thought osu could become an esport. Sure, it's interesting with it's tournament scene, but it wouldn't be as fun to watch as an esport as much as other popular esports like counter strike. There's no gameplay strategy involved in osu!. There's nothing you can do in a match to throw off or confuse your opponent or take them by surprise. Every official esport that I know of, DOES have this. Strategy is what osu is missing, and that's why it likely won't ever be an esport.
While the tournament systems in osu! has flaws, they can easily fix them and some of the things you said would be a good addition. Like having sponsors for OWC or something along the lines of that. Also 5:44 based take.
Great video. I fully agree that the unintuitive difficulty of tournament play to those unfamiliar(and even a lot of ppl familiar) with the game, alongside the extremely long tournament duration hurts the esport side of the game. Honestly the roundtable and the tourney MoistCritical hosts where the tournament lasts a week or 2 would be the best way to host it but the low prizepool, how big the brackets are and how long sets can last is a huge barrier to overcome. From my 1 time experience doing a non serious tourney, real life and timezones was real hard even with the fact that my team was in nearly the same time zone.
i think if osu tournaments are going to be taken seriously, there needs to be a rise in money pools. grinding tournament after tournament is just not feasible as a source of income for players compared to having a whole season to prepare for one tournament that's really large. Or a lot of small invite tournaments orgs somehow get enough money to pay for a player's appearance regardless of performance and for placement ofc. i don't know if we have the playerbase to do that rn lol
I think when you talked about the difference where in other esports you interact with the other player in the game like fighting games or shooters is the biggest reason it's hard to become a popular esport. I think it's just generally more entertaining to watch when there is interaction because it allows for hype outplay moments and such. In osu you don't really "outplay" your opponent in like some unexpected way, you just play better and win. That's my take on why it's hard to become a big esport atleast, because it definitely has the skill ceiling and skill based play that is required for esports
I'd like to say that from a new player perspective or someone who wants to get into tourney in osu, registration are still way too obscure, like there is a "tournament" tabs but you need to click on the forum one, searching for a tourney in your skill range can be hell if you're not 5 digit and much more. So there are still some dumb barrier. Though it's not as bad as closed esport like league of legends who is really really dumb. overall if game like trackmania can do it and have big tourney, it's obvious that one of the most popular rythm game will one day attract team and so on. Only time and exposure is needed.
Since theres no interacting with the other person, its more of a competition like with speedrunning than a proper game where you play against people, it probably wont ever be an esport. At least not one thats popular. You dont against your opponent, you play with your opponent in osu.
nice vid. We can hope, but at the end of the day copyright, the really weird people in the community (both pedos and the needless toxicity), and the kinda boring viewing nature of the game drag it down, to the point where I think it will never become a proper esport. Also esports are dying so like heavy doubt anything is gonna happen.
As much as id like to see it OSU has so much stacked against as to why it would be a terrible esports venture the most i could see is just community driven things like how cod was back in the day
i think if osu really gonna be an eSport, it'll be all mode tourney. so in one team there'll be a standard, mania, taiko, and ctb player. so in a match it'll be 2 team, 4 player, 4 mode. idk, it's just a personal opinion. some people might already tried this format or not at all.
you talked about league of legends that a portion of the esport watchers didn't even play the game but that portion is a small one in my opinion and a bigger number of people are those who already played the game and now just wanna watch it(applies to other games as well but MOBAs are way more complex). Also the reason all the other game are way more popular is that they are a mix of mechanical and tactical skill while osu! is purely mechanical and that is not so entertaining to watch. a good comparison to osu! in real life would be golf both are fun when you play them but both are boring to watch.
annaki was very toxic, he had an tournament we was participating, and he loses to my team, later when my team tried to join his tournament, he just ignored us
most sports irl are mainly athleticism based no? Not reaction times, if you mean they are similar because athleticism at the top level is largely genetics based and reaction time is almost purely genetics based then I'd agree. But I think the most sport like esport is definitely simulation racers, since that's literally the same thing as F1 just no G forces. Other than simulation games it's hard to find one who is most similar I think
