We exercise freewill everytime we make contemplated decisions, that are above and beyond instinctive reactive decisions. Planning and consideration, followed by action, seem to be the line between determinism and freewill.

I very much enjoyed the presentation..I would only suggest that the wave function of particles does not collapse because we LOOK at them.. The interaction with other particles causes this..There are no observer DEPENDENT characteristics to matter.. For these reasons there is no entanglement of a live and dead cat. Schrodinger was right to doubt the idea.. DUE TO particle interactions there are virtually no Quantum effects in a cat. An observer will simply DISCOVER if the cat has died or not without the superposition..Thanks.

Agreed, we can explain physics from our perspective however are we not all using our consciousness to be able to explain physics? We can’t really prove anything whilst the only tool we have to use to evaluate anything is something we have yet to prove itself. We are measuring everything using our consciousness which at the moment is the equivalent of using a ruler with no numbers on it, so all we really have is a stick, that we ate presuming we can use as a ruler. I mean no disrespect with this reply, but I just wonder if it’s perhaps physics (and potentially everything else) that exist because of consciousness? At the deepest level, it is a chicken and egg question.

Sure, it's called vivid imagination. Problem is, those particular imaginings don't usually result in anything testable or useful. Penrose and Hameroff, of course, put forward a testable hypothesis in recent years - Orch OR. It was eventually disproven, but it was at least testable. Theirs is the only exception that I'm aware of.

Its normal to feel "weird". Our brain definetly didn't evolve to understand existence, conciousness or the universe. All we acheived is a by-product of language and survivalism.

On the contrary, there's most definitely evidence to suggest consciousness is produced by brains, however it's not necessarily proof. I suspect brains are kind of like a radio, where it doesn't produce consciousness (music), but rather is a device that picks up on various signals based on how it's tuned. Hence non-local 👌

If you look into Out of Body Experiences and Near Death Experiences this gives a compelling insight into how awareness is not limited to brain function. Such as in the Pam Reynolds case and Eben Alexander. I am a dualist and stick by my arguments. I am yet to be convinced by a materialists arguments.

@@Dion_Mustard I don't give much credit to these near death and "died briefly and then came back" experiences having significant meaning. Especially considering that each individual's perception of the experience will vary and will lead to different subjective interpretations. I think you might be confusing semantics because "evidence" of something is not the same as "proof". There could be evidence to suggest something that is not actually true. As I implied above, I don't suspect consciousness is actually produced by the brain either, but there is some evidence to suggest it is so. For example, damaging an area of the brain can change their consciousness, and shutting it down seems to also shut down consciousness. This is very strong evidence! So it's no surprise that this has been the general view. I've heard all manner of claims from "out of body surfers" that contradict each other. While I don't doubt any of their experiences, I'm sure they're perception and interpretation of what's actually happening is off. And for the record, I've had OOB experiences myself, so I do get it.

There's no need to tell me of OOBE because I'm well aware; rather what I'm saying is that conflicting reports of these experiences (there's similarities too) between various people, including myself, shows that people as a collective don't necessarily understand what it is they experienced. There's people coming back talking about galactic civilizations and various different beings and all kinds of weird stuff, and because each person either had an OOBE or at least believe they did, each one believes they know some ultimate truth that the others are wrong about. So I'm not saying it's not an OOBE, I'm just saying some people seem to be getting a little weirded out by the experience. I've had them, I've heard reports of experiences just like mine, but I've also heard weird nonsense. You and I both know there's weirdos out there too, and that some people DO just imagine stuff, so I'm just careful.

We are non-local, our consciousness - I would say Soul _ is non-local, in a state of super-position, or as the Buddhist's say :At One Ment" with all life everywhere, and with the Universe. Yes because you said the body shapes the mind. Actually it is the opposite. Mind / consciousness come first, them materialism. This is the reason scientist cannot directly detect so-called dark energy. Said energy has a vibration, much higher than the vibrations that make up the physical realm. Instruments made out of matter can only detect matter. As an example in the matter realm, a sub-woofer cannot detect and reproduce ultrasonic vibrations. Physics is the study of energy within the matter realm..hence the reason the laws of physics cannot explain what happens beyond the sub-atomic realm...the vibrations are too high. We won't need eyes to see what's in eternity, eternal beings don't need vision that's material world stuff. It's not that consciousness or life can't be defined, it's that it can't be stated in a meme-sized soundbyte. There's no single operation, but a complex system of operations, the detailed descriptions of which would put most normal human beings to sleep reading or listening to them. No matter how many books it sells, simply declaring a thing mysterious and unknowable doesn't make it so. One person's "spooky mysterious unknown" is another persons "next frontier of discovery."

Conciousness is energy

By vedanta tradition, yes. But in reality i suspect you are mislead and put conciousness on a bigger podium than it actually is. I suggest starting with checking the experiments done on patients with "split-brains". Or just notice how your conciousness changes by the interaction with a neuropharmacological substance for example. If conciousness is fundamental as you claim, how it can be so easily altered by a physical interaction of a chemical substance in your, wait for it, brain. Or in other words, changing your brain physically, changes your conciousness and in some cases even shuts it down temporarily. This is well known empiric evidence.

I grant you that conciousness is fundamental to to humans. I mean for us, everything is conciousness in a way, we are convicted to see the universe throught this lens only. But to the universe in general, outside us, again, i think you are mislead. I appreciate the buddhist and the hindu tradition but for other things, not for stating that everything is concious and conciousness is everywhere, just by introspection. Its understandable why people came to that conclusion but the history is absolutely filled with bad ideas that for some time they felt like common sense and undisputable.

You missed the point. You can study all the brain functions you want for a million years and you won't get consciousness from that.

There has been a long history of seemingly separate phenomena being reduced to the known laws of physics as our knowledge is expanded. The motions of the heavenly bodies aren't guided by angels, they are guided by the same spacetime curvature that binds us tiny people to the earth. Disease isn't caused by demons, it is caused by biological functions that can be studied just like our own biology can be studied. String together a few thousand examples of this reductionism playing out through history, and denying it is like saying "yeah, the sun may have risen in the east for the last several millenia, but people who assert that it will do so tomorrow are some sort of religious cult."

Yes! Math is a language, a very, very terse one. Language is about abstraction in several different ways. During the evolution of language the self concept manifested. (How that happened is a different question). The manifestation of the self concept entailed becoming conscious. I mean, it is your self that is conscious, right? What else but a self could possibly be conscious?

Eastern religions were right about the nature of reality long before science came to that conclusions.I listened to a lecture by Dr.Poltorack about the Torah and quantum physics and also about the Zohar

I agreed with you but Torah and Zohar their taboo subjects are only personal God's stuff and Holy Spirits where Quatum Science hardly believe and blatantly rejected that stuff.

John Lawrence Wrong on so many levels. No we don’t know what consciousness is and it is not known for thousands of years. We experience it or even use it, sure, but that is far from knowing how something works and is connected to the rest of the universe. But it surely feels good to simplyfy the problems we face today and smear it on this arrogant idea of yours. Just like the good old dark middle ages.
