The questions of the interviewer are quite poignant and Dr. Polkinghorne's answers are greatly helpful. I like to hear how he correlates science with theology in such a way that they are actually in dialogue rather than contradiction.
It was a long journey until I came across interviews with Mr Polkinghome today. I have been missing him. I have been thinking that evolution is helpful in understanding that suffering is part of a packaged deal, and that God s engagement with time in the Old and New covenant is in some kind of harmony with evolution and its ramifications in the world explanations. What he says about God s knowledge about the unfolding reality of this world is reminiscent of my readings from Romano Guardini, author of The Lord, and of The wisdom of Psalms. There were two lines of prophesies about Jesus: he is accepted as king and Messiah or he is rejected.
God sent a flood to recreate the world, I wonder if the universe should someday meet a similar fate. Is the flood foreshadowing of the big crunch, the big freeze, the big rip, some form of "destruction" of the universe which should serve to remake it? It's a theme I've been hearing a lot lately, that the physical Universe won't be destroyed and we won't spend eternity as metaphysical entities, rather we will be resurrected as physical entities... It's always been a hard point for me to reconcile, to accept.

I would love to hear his personal testimony as to why he became a Christian. An otherwise rational person. He refers to experiential evidence. I wonder how hew new that his senses weren't fooling him.
It is perfectly rational to believe something one has experience of. If we adopted a position of scepticism to our perceptions and experiences then we wouldn’t have warrant for so many of our beliefs we wouldn’t be able to get on; and thus it is reasonable to rest our beliefs on our experiences and perception because of the costs of not doing so. So his beliefs are rational even if you disapprove.
@@EVSmith-by9no only we know that our perception is imperfect. We are prone to imagine agency where none exists. That is what we do know about the human mind so we need to be aware of its limitations and be sure that we have objective not subjective evidence for the things we choose to believe in.

And in any case, being aware of the fact that we are prone to detecting regularities, patterns, meanings, etc., does not mean that such things don't exist. It's called the genetic fallacy, I think, wherein we mistake providing an explanation of something's origins with a proof against its truthfulness. Accepting as rational warrant only objective evidence for the things we choose to believe in is too high a bar for beliefs and knowledge. If we only accepted objective evidence for warrants for belief then we could never believe anything about our own, or other's, interior lives, i.e. emotions, thoughts, memories, and so on. We could never believe in things that only we saw, or that haven't repeated a sufficient number of times. In fact, due to the nature of scientific method, which relies heavily on interpretation of facts, your bar might even be raised too high for a great many scientific theories. We might end up only able to believe logical truths. As I say, this is too great a cost for warrants for beliefs, and it is therefore perfectly reasonable hence rational, to warrant beliefs based upon subjective experience.

In the vast majority and almost close if not actually 100% of the time things attributed to pixies, fairies, the banshee, ghosts, witches, daemons, angels, Lord Vishnu, Allah, Yahweh, Thor or Zeus among countless other imagined agencies have never been proven to be due to those things. I’m not saying 100% with certainty but why know that we humans are wrong about the vast majority of examples imagined agency. We are preprogrammed as a survival instinct.
