Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel! Today we’ll be looking at the famous „Powerback procedure“, with which pilots use reverse thrust to back out of their gate position.
Powerback is used by aircraft to move backwards on the ground using the power of their engines along with the aircraft's thrust reversal.In Europe, only propeller aircraft tend to use powerbacks as a means of reversing, while in the United States some larger jet aircraft also perform powerbacks.
While many aircraft are physically capable of performing powerbacks, many companies impose restrictions on the practice, mainly due to the risk of FOD (foreign object damage) from debris propelled into the air. This problem is magnified even more with planes having wing-mounted engines, as their proximity to the ground can exacerbate debris ingestion if powerbacks are used. Small metal objects are particularly dangerous as they can be propelled into terminal windows, employees on the ground or even the aircraft itself. Applying the brakes when backing up also has the potential to cause a tailstrike.
During the 1980s, many aircraft with aft-mounted engines, such as DC-9s, Boeing 727s, and MD-80s used powerbacks to reduce the number of ground personnel required. For example, Northwest Airlines' fleet of DC-9 aircraft used powerback operations at certain airports, but discontinued the practice in 2005 citing the need to conserve fuel. KLM also avoids using the procedure for the same reasons, noting that powerbacks cause extra wear on the engines.
In addition, in the United States, restrictions on powerbacks are enforced by the FAA, and the local aviation officials. Only certain gates at certain airports are approved for powerbacks, and are usually placarded as such. Many airlines impose stricter safety procedures for powerbacks, which often include disallowing a powerback under certain environmental conditions, such as rain or snow.[5]
It is sometimes mandatory to powerback for take-off. In Grand Case Airport (official name L'Espérance Airport, French part of Saint-Martin island) the runway can be used only by ATR-42 and ATR-72 after a powerback to get its full length available.
But see more within the video!
Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
Wishing you all the best!

I first encountered "backing out of a gate" on a DC-9 variant when I changed planes in Memphis a few decades ago. I'm sure that CG would be a factor in how the decision would be made, and I'm also sure that most airlines would prefer a tug push out over standing one on its tail. As a former ramp rat for UPS, I was familiar with the usual marshalling signals. The one for "back out of the stall onto the ramp" was new to me at the time, but made perfect sense.

This was a fun one for me, it had me laughing and I feel validated now. I had no idea until today that this was actually approved in some cases, and that all these maneuvers happen in the real world under the right conditions. In my flight simming, I've forgotten to enable pushback add-ons etc. and had to back myself out of the gate with reversers, or do a 3-point turn, or back up to get the full runway length etc. and I felt like I was cheating or doing something unsafe. No longer! :D I can see how it would be the safest option sometimes too.

The video was great, I mention on another video my Father use to work for the OLD Frontier Airlines when they had the 727, 737-100, 200's and they would do powerbacks all the time because of what you said, some of the airports had no Ground Support Equipment, e.g. Scottbluff, Grand Island Nebraska. I always wondered, why don't they continue with this and FINALLY, YOU ANSWERED MY DECADES OLD QUESTION. Makes sense now, primarily FOD.

Only time I've ever experienced this was in the early '90s at Atlanta Hartsfield. MD80. We had no warning and as the engines spooled up quite high at the gate, we passengers started looking around at each other with eyebrows raised. After the plane started rolling back, we recognized what the pilot was doing and grinned at each other. It was really cool!

Sean White I used to live in CT in the 90s and was dating a guy in Ft Lauderdale, FL. I was in graduate school, so I couldn’t move. We took turns flying about every 3 weeks. Usually they were MD-80s. Short flight, about 2.5 hrs. And I could drive to LaGuardia in 45 minutes and zip thru security back then. His brother was a pilot on US Air. More then once he was the pilot. Go figure. So I got to be in the jump seat for part of the flight. Was lots of fun.

Military and military-type cargo aircraft can do it because they can open the rear ramp and have crew members guide them back, and also because their high-wing-mounted engines are less vulnerable to FOD ingestion.

@EleanorPeterson
@EleanorPeterson 4 года назад
Hi, Emilien! Carrying an extra 400kg? Man, that's a LOT - just ask my skinny-fit jeans! :-) Don't forget that in commercial aviation every scrap of mass is counted and costed because it has to be hauled throughout the plane's entire working life. Dozens of years and hundreds of millions of miles... If an airline is worried enough to use tiny hollow plastic drink-stirrers because even plastic teaspoons are considered to be too big and heavy, you can be pretty sure that it wouldn't want an extra 900 lbs per plane cutting into its budget. It could be carrying another 3 or 4 paying passengers per flight! Far cheaper to use a pusher/tractor that gets left behind on the ground. And there'd also be the cost of having another safety-critical system on board to maintain. Service time is down-time, and that's big, big money for any airline. Military aircraft would certainly benefit, though. Money is not a consideration; no ground crew or vehicles would be exposed to hostile actions (such as enemy snipers), and the vastly improved speed of deployment would make it a very good idea indeed. Please note: all of the above is just my humble opinion. I'm not a commercial jet pilot or a professional engineer, just an aviation enthusiast. [Got my PPL on a Cessna 172; licence now sadly lapsed. Sob, sniff...]

@roichir7699
@roichir7699 4 года назад
You burn more fuel during cruise with the additional weight, than you would save on the ground. Count in the additional maintenance cost, as wheels are changed quite often and you need special wheels for that and much more things. It is not cost efficient right now.
@tomstravels520
@tomstravels520 4 года назад
Roichi R fair enough. Didn’t think the motors would weigh that much but then again I don’t know how much power is needed to move a 200 ton jet
@roichir7699
@roichir7699 4 года назад
@@tomstravels520 It is not just the motors. You have the electronics for them, the power supply and more. And there is the usual snowball effect in aviation, as a rule of thumb, for every kilogram you add, you need four kilograms to support it. And fuel for all five of them.

Airforceproud95 had a video of him doing a powerback because he was on one of the realism servers and they didn't provide him a pushback truck. He got so much flack for his "Russian flight technique." Or course, he was cleared for pushback, but they didn't say powerback. Don't remember what he was flying. May have been a 747. All I remembered was it was FedEx livery and they were flying inbound to the Memphis Fedex hub.

Hello Captain Joe, thanks a lot for all the wonderful episodes that you have been bringing to people, they are very educative and informative at the same time. I just want you to explain to me specifically in a plain language if a plane has a reverse gear or not and if it is the reverse thrust that is used for the power back operation. Thanks and I believe that you will use your expertise to explain this to me.

Hi Captain Joe, I've been a fan for a long time but I've always been wondering, what are your most intense moments from your aviation career thus far? Like, have you ever had failures on an aircraft, or flew through a heavy storm, last second go-arounds, etc? And how did you deal with them if you have any?

Hi "Captain" Joe, been wanting to ask you this for a long time, ever since I first saw your video years ago. Why do you call yourself "Captain" Joe, since the stripes denote you are a First Officer (three stripes vs four)? Isn't that misleading? Do please take this as a sincere and curious query, not a hate comment. I LOVE all your videos, and you have a great personality, and I enjoy your humor too. I have learnt a lot about aviation thanks to you.

I used powerback whenever I needed with C-130s and T-27s. Besides being careful not to hit obstacles, the important trick when braking backwards is not braking at all, but putting the propeller(s) in positive angle and having it(them) doing the job. When the backward movement ceases and the aircraft hints at starting forward motion, then you apply the brakes.
