Can Porcupines Shoot Their Quills?

One of the big misconceptions about porcupines is that they can shoot their quills. Let’s take a closer look at the different sizes and shapes of African Crested Porcupine quills and see just how well they can fly, and if they will work as darts…a question I get from time to time!

Thanks for this. I get tired of the dog vs porcupine videos on YT. "My heckin' good pupurino was just minding his own business when this evil porcupine showed up and shot my boy's mouth full of quills. I shot the porcupine so it will never attack an innocent dog again!" No, your dog found a porcupine and tried to kill it and got a mouthful of quills. If you kept your dog contained (in a building or a kennel or pen) this would not happen. The worst is when people are hiking in a park or nature preserve and they have their dog off leash. If your dog tries to kill everything that moves and you can't or wont stop it, don't bring it on nature hikes.

Thanks Rachel and family for this interesting video...👍👍 Now I know, Porqupine quills are only good for protecting Porqupines and popping balloons.😄 On a more serious note, Weren't they use for writing by dipping them in ink?? All the best.

Lol, glad you discovered the proper uses for quills!!! Great question about the pen. I know they are called quill pens, but I believe they were actually primarily made from feathers. The lower shaft of a feather is referred to as a quill; thus, a quill pen. I am not sure about the history of actually using a porcupine quill as a pen, but it can certainly be done, as I see some are available on Etsy!

If they can shoot then they can be a really dangerous pet especially if shot and aimed at eye, even at skin if penetrated deep.
@AdventurousHeartRachelNagle
Yes, good thing it is a myth that porcupines can shoot their quills. You still must of course be careful and mindful of their sharp quills, but at least they can’t actually shoot them!
