The salt isn't exactly drawing the water out. It's breaking down the cellular structure of the pumpkins, which releases water, but also makes the tissues softer. If you really want a pumpkin to last, resin or not, you should freeze dry one.
@thewiseturtle

A few tips to improve your results next year: -carve the insides to make a thinner pumpkin skin -pumpkin buttholes -use cloth or mesh to cover the holes to keep salt in while letting water drain -blow a balloon inside the pumpkin to fill 90% of the cavity, then fill with salt/silica -change out the salt/silica daily -dont cover
@cferracini
@cferracini 2 года назад
or... 1) remove pumpkin insides. 2) do NOT carve a face, leave it with only the hole on top. fill inside of the pumpkin with uncooked dry beans. 3) put inside a dehydrator (costs about $150 so I think it can be cheaper than getting bags of salt and silica in the long run, plus other cool experiments). 4) your choice of resin first and (remove beans) carve later (resin inside) or the opposite.
@raraavis7782
@raraavis7782 2 года назад
Or why not put the carved out pumpkin in front of a fan heater on low heat. That would work just as well as a dehydrator for a large object like this and who doesn't have one of those at home (or you can buy a used one for a couple bucks). I would at least partly dry them this way, before employing salt or silica.
@SashaSRenee
@SashaSRenee 2 года назад
I would suggest putting them in upside down so it can drain through the large whole in the top (with the cloth/mesh covering the whole, of course). It would be much more efficient at draining and there would be no spots that have stagnant liquid on it. I would also use a bucket with a drainage spout instead of a bag and maybe have a thick layer at the bottom of clay beads, rocks, etc to create a drainage layer (like for plants or bioactive reptile enclosures) in case the spout outflow isn't enough to prevent pooling.

also putting it on a riser in the bad of salt/silica, so that any moisture pooling at the bottom doesn't touch the pumpkin

When I was young my school class did a cool project while learning about ancient egypt where we were split into groups and mummified raw mini roasting chickens! I remember it really well 'cus it was so neat. I think I can give some tips for your try next year! 1) Use smaller pumpkins. 2) Plan for it to take at LEAST a month to dry them out, if not two or three since pumpkins have a lot of water. 3) Grain salt will work much better, and mixing the silica beads in with the salt would probably help too! 4) You need to fully replace all the salt every day at first, then less as time goes on as there's less moisture. 5) The salt on the outside needs to be held close to the pumpkin, and you DEFINITELY don't want to be using plastic cus it traps the moisture. Try using a bag made of burlap or cheesecloth or something similar that's only big enough to give you an inch or so all around the pumpkin to put the salt. 6) Absolutely expect shrinkage and adjust the size of the bag as needed to keep the space a close fit. 7) Since pumpkins don't have internal structure to help it hold its shape, you may want to create a sort of armature cage on the inside of them to help. Maybe thin strips of wood like bamboo or something?

I actually tried this a few years back, I salted it daily and wiped up the juices as they collected, but it still ended up molding over. Side note, gourds have been dehydrated into containers for years, and when researching it they advice to keep them in a cold dry place with good air flow, heat actually encourages mold growth, my rooms actually a fairly good place for that, but I also have a bad habit of just constantly burning candles in them. Yeah next year, don't carve them, put them in the room with the dehumidifier, turn down the temp place it on a grate so there's air flow under it, and then put a hole in the base and place it over a drip tray, which you should drain daily, and may be put a fan on in front of it, and then when it's hard and the seeds shake free inside carefully cut out the face.

I learned how to mummify things in high school and the moment I saw the salt and the bags my mind went, "Oh, NO!" You really can't mummify in an enclosed environment, it doesn't allow the moisture out at all and you're just making soup in a bag. I did my projects in plastic bins and I ended up with a similar issue. When I moved on to doing commissioned work, I got myself a setup that kept the air circulating at specific temperature and humidity levels. Next year try it again, but make an enclosed chamber with salt AND a dehumidifier that has continuous drainage capabilities, and add more salt as it depletes. Also perhaps try zeolite as a desiccant.

I think the ideal would have been to place them in buckets, drill small holes in the base to drain the liquid, since being sealed in plastic bags, the "sweat" has nowhere to escape and is kept in the same bag, that is why despite being on salt and dehydrated, they again absorb the moisture trapped in the bag, that is why they were soggy and mold appeared at one point too.

Ok, idea for next year (I guess this year? 2021): freeze drying. Theoretically all you have to do is freeze it and put it in the vacuum chamber. Maybe do some research on freeze drying methods. There’s tons of papers on it! You could also use liquid nitrogen to flash freeze the pumpkin which would preserve the cell structure, and reduce the sag/wrinkles.

I'd be super interested to see a video where you bought two pumpkins now, drew cute faces on them, resined one, and put them outside until next Halloween to see how they faired. (Cute story: a friend left a pumpkin on her kitchen table for a year and then decided to bury it in her yard. Now she has a cute pumpkin patch that grows 4 or 5 pumpkins every fall)

When I was in grade 3, we were studying the Amazonian tribes that ritualistically preserve the heads of slain enemies ("shrunken heads"), and our class project was to each take a large potato, carve eyes, a nose and mouth into it, put in like, wooden beads for the eyes and little pasta noodles (elbow macaroni) for teeth, and then just hang it up in an area with high air flow and let it dessicate and shrink up. That was in December of 1989. *32 years later, I still have the potato.* This marvel of dehydration currently hangs in my bedroom, just because I think it's frickin' cool (though it has lost a couple "teeth"). Anyway, it only took like, a month to dry out back then (water content of potatoes = ~80%...pumpkins have over 90%, but I think the technique would still work, it would just take longer), and now that it is water-free, it will last forever (well, maybe not forever, but an extremely long time on a human life-scale at least). If I ever have kids (haha, not likely, I hate kids, but people keep telling me that I will want them eventually) I will pass it on to one of them as a family heirloom.

Heyo! Here's why there was so much juice. When you loaded the surrounding area with salt, the area became 'hypertonic' meaning there are more solute outside of the cell than inside. This does have the effect of drawing out moisture as the 'solution' is trying to reach equilibrium. However, that liquid then had nowhere to go. While the boiling point has been raised because of the salt, heat will still contribute to faster evaporation. But, is also dependent on surface area, and airflow (you can think of this as the replacement for agitation in a liquid solution). By placing them in black plastic bags and covering the surface in salt, there was no airflow, and not much exposed surface area. One other factor is humidity. Humidity varies depending on the temperature of the air, as it is the capacity of the air to hold moisture. Meaning that if it is 100% humid, the air is at peak saturation, and cannot accept any more moisture (if you add any more water to the air, it is hype saturated and will condense until it is not - this is how dew/frost forms). The more humid the air is, the longer the process will take, because it is a solution trying to reach equilibrium.

I know you don’t want to know this, but… In Victorian times, they literally ground up ancient Egyptian mummies and sold it as medicine. I watched a documentary on mummies around a decade ago, so I'm an expert. The Egyptians first removed several of the major organs and packed salt inside the cavity, mummifying the organs separately. They then placed the body on a slanted table with a drain spout at one end, and piled salt on top and around it, and then left it in the open air. After the first (I think) 30 days they came back to reposition the arms into the classic mummy pose, and then recovered the mummy to finish the dehydration process. Osmosis causes the water to move toward the salt to try to equalize the salt concentration, but the water needs to have somewhere to go. On another note, breathing salty air is actually good for your lungs. Don't inhale table salt, because the crystals will hurt you, but the microscopic airborne particles can reduce the risk of respiratory illness.

Honestly, I just want to see them re-attempt dehydrating the pumpkins without rushing the process. Slow-curing them and making sure the water the salt draws out is able to evaporate. Maybe getting like some clear plastic bins tall enough to accommodate a layer of salt all around it and ontop of the pumpkins so then they are fully submerged and able to be fully encased and mummified and then Evan n Katelyn taking process videos of the pumpkins each time they turn the pumpkins and re-cover them in salt over time. I feel like if they did it this way, they will get faster results and it'll be less of a hassle for them to document the process.
@sujurean
@sujurean 2 года назад
wolfie54321 well what i meant was, the dehydration was rushed bc they wanted to do the resin experiment ASAP, instead of rushing it/ thinking the salt will do all the work. What i suggested was for them to instead focus entirely on dehydrating it with just the salt, none of the other shortcuts they attempted in the end. i just think we stopped the real interesting experiment, which was mummifying the pumpkins for science
