Excellent discussion. Here in Costa Rica, a country in Latin America, we love to criticize the authorities, like a collective hobby but this is not related to a lack of patriotism . For us patriotism is love for our traditions, our History and natural scenery. That's about it.

Не понимаю почему, но эти слова произвели огромное впечатление на меня. Я всегда был русофилом, сомнительные действия российской власти вряд ли смогут повлиять на моё отношение к России. It reminds me of the US in 2003. I remember reading about people opposing the war in Iraq and they were called "Anti American" and traitors, even though the very idea of the Republic is that one should be able to question the governments actions. I think that wars and great crises very easily distort complex realities and create oversimplified truths (or lies)

American here. I don’t feel like I “owe” my country anything. I pay taxes because that’s the deal (social contract). Everything else I give is because I WANT to, not because I feel indebted to the country. Also interesting to hear that culturally (for some), Russians have always had a “strong man” as a leader, and as a result , some Russians look to the leader as though they’re like a monarch or czar… someone to whom they they owe their fealty. To me. The U.S. president is just a man (or in the future… a woman), who is essentially my employee. He works for the American people… not the other way around. Sadly that viewpoint has changed in recent years as more conservatives seem to have less of a problem with authoritarian leaders, so we’ll see what direction America goes in the future. Once you lose your democracy/freedom, it’s hard to get it back.

Your comments sent me back to the Vietnam war days of my youth. I see many parallels. Albeit imperfect. This war became increasingly unpopular as it developed. This was not a sudden invasion as such but Johnson accelerated it after the Gulf of Tonkin incident. We were fed WW2 shows and documentaries quite often. A show called "The Big Picture" we'd watch as kids. We often felt we had to match that earlier generation. A split between generations formed. "Love it or leave it" was a saying by those supporting the war. "Change it or lose it" replied anti-war people. Some young men left the country to avoid the military draft. I myself had a high lottery number although the war was winding down by then. As well as the draft. People who were from disadvantaged areas and backgrounds often were predominant in the front lines. Sounds like similar things are going on in Russia. As an unrelated note. Conservative politicians used the war as a way to carve off the working class from their post-Depression New Deal progressive roots. This was largely successful. Just a few random thoughts. Good thoughts to you both.

Max and Yulia, you express beautifully the differences between healthy patriotism and blind trust in power, no matter how destructive that power is. The concept of a social contract is key to viewing how government should be seen: People are in positions of power to advance the whole of society, not their own narrow self-interests. My American president, Abraham Lincoln, 150 years ago, spoke of a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people". I think this best sums up the relationship between power and the society it is to serve.... I pray that you are recovering from your recent setbacks in health and circumstance and on the way toward a flourishing future.

George Orwell’s ‘Notes on Nationalism’ is as relevant at this juncture of European history as it was in 1945. He clearly sets out the difference between the ‘patriotism’ of the person who loves their country and its culture, and the grandiose aggression engendered through power hungry nationalism, under which facile descriptors of other nations as being ‘bad’ (or according to the current Russian leadership, ‘nazis’)are used to justify otherwise illegal/inhumane behaviour. Putin seems to have done a good job on conflating these two entirely different concepts. Keep up the good work!

Here in Sweden we have a saying (which I am certain exists in most countries) which is something like this in English - I love my country but hate the government.

A lot of it comes down to an all-or-nothing mentality. Many of the greater conversations lack nuance. That is why I appreciate the quality of your dialogs, and I'm able to understand more and more. Thank you both. I had a month-long trip to Russia which was obviously canceled. Hopefully soon I can visit again

По-моему "где родился, там и пригодился" поговорка неплохая, она выражает что-то вроде что каждый может найти своё место на родине при желании. It is a difficult and complicated question. Even when you think of people, there are so many characters even in a small country let alone a country of 140+ mil people, some of whom you can not even see eye to eye with. The only thing that helps me when I think about such topics is trying to remind myself those however many good people I come across makes it worth to patiently bear all the disappointing lot.

I have only one comment. Poor people, poor young souls that have to cope with war, with embargo of the west (in this case). I had to deal with it when my country was bombed by nato (polititians) in 1999, i was a student, a youngster with no apparent future... Wish you all a lot of luck, endurancy and strength no matter what side life has put you on.

We all want the Russia that you describe...many wanted it for hundreds of years but the culture of control and even terror is deeply engrained. The fight between Enlightenment and 'pure' Russian tradition of strong man/iron fist has never changed...and the iron fist has always won. That is why you are in Serbia and found it amazing to watch a demonstartion with few police in Belgrade. We see the worst of the culture of propaganda, brutality and lies again now. Hopefully this will be the last time and when this evil madness is over all that is good in Russia can come to the fore and a democratic enlightened country will emerge where people will not have to leave in order to breathe and speak. The "pro-Putin" arguments were cherry picked. Easy to "debunk" some arguments when you simply select the weakest ones. Strong "pro-Putin" (not necessarily pro-Putin but pro-status quo) are: - US does not hide its intent to balkanise Russia, Yugoslavia style. This is clear if you care to read US main think tanks (RAND for example) and to follow the positions of US-backed organisation such as the World League for Freedom and Democracy (previously know as the Anti-Communist League during the Cold War). - US has a double standard, it wants to balkanise and denuclearise the Russian Federation while keeping its own nuclear arsenal and even expanding its capabilities if we think on the recent AUKUS agreement and the F-35 expansion in Europe (nuclear capable). - So for those who are claiming that Russia special op in Ukraine is illegal...Minsk II was signed not only by Ukraine (who claims it was forced to) but also from Europeans sponsors of the Agreement. The agreement was not respected at any time and Kiev's elite does not deny that, as they claim that the agreement was void from the start. - Arguments that basically claim that Ukraine is trying to become more "democratic" are phony, Russian and Ukrainian structural issues are basically the same. No intent to become more "Western style democratic". Evidence: Poland, Turkey, Israel, Colombia and many others US strategic partners. - Bottom line, both Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs are fleeing and stashing their fortunes in Dubai and elsewhere. Only low paid servicemen and civilians are suffering on both sides. US/Canada/UK have no intent to negotiate. They put fundamentalists in power just like they did (or allowed to happen) across middle East and North of Africa. We all know that Igor Kolomoisky (the Right Sector sponsor) is the one responsible for Zelensky's "democratic" election. Parliamentary and legal arguments in general cannot stand 2 minutes of sober analysis. Russia, despite its flaws, should stand with Putin as the moment is critical, Putin's honeymoon with the West lasted 10 years or so and it is clear that there is no room for "coexistence". Russia must be fragmented and China as well, this is the only possible coexistence that US will allow. EU is the perfect model, many small countries ruled by bureaucrats and technocrats. No autonomous will as all strategic moves depend on US blessing. I live in Europe for 20 years now and I doubt that someone will explain how the US-sponsored Arab Spring was positive for Europe. EU in general, having economies such as Portugal and Greece using the same currency of Germany, Denmark and Netherlands is macroecomic suicide. This is not a struggle for or against Putin, this is a struggle against US and Washington Consensus system as a whole. For those who still feel that there is a positive outcome form the current situation with a regime change in Russia. They should take a really close look on Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq. Russian liberals dream of Sweden and Germany, they will get Libya and Syria instead (maybe Argentina if they are lucky).

What do the "patriots" in the Kremlin fear and despise most of all? Their own people, of course. This is the bitterest irony of all, and it's what makes them precisely the type of patriots Dr Johnson had in mind. (and apologies for writing in English, но мой русский ещё очень плохой 🙏)

could you tell us, some day, how the conscription works for service in the army. what is the difference between "прзыв" и "контракт" is it true that being drafted is for two years, and signing a contract can be for one year only, with more money? Решила сейчас обратиться данным вопросом к надлежащему Учителю (😁): нету да правила, чтобы это сразу определить? Только остаётся, как сейчас, тратит несколько минут искать данный глагол и проверить? Honestly, I've come to the point where I support our government in almost nothing they do. Our government has spent so much money and lives in a pointless war for influence and resources, under the guise of removing some vague national threat. Many civilian casualties in our unjust invasion of a sovereign nation who has done us no harm. So while I love my homeland, I do not support the government and owe it nothing. Dear Max and Julia, first of all, welcome to Serbia, you are more than welcome here. Like all the other Slavic brothers. I just wanted to point out Serbs opinion about all of this situation, I think majority of Serbs. We are no doubt for Russia, and we know exactly why. Because we are in between west and east, and we have experienced both, we had contact with both cultures. Because of that we will always be for our Russian brothers, because west doesn't want to assimilate with other cultures, they are dictators, they want from you to leave everything you stood for, and to become their atheistic slaves. I am also sure that majority of US people for example are also against their liberal rethoric. We want to stay free, to have normal families and to learn them true values. We do not want accept as they say new reality. That is all about, and this war, its not against our Ukranian brothers, Ukraine is heart of all Slavs. Serbs do not hate anyone ( except Croats :), just kidding, they are our lost brothers ).
