Germany's Can are known for concocting an unlikely blend of avant-garde and the primal. Their 1972 album Ege Bamyasi struck a balance between sublimity and chaos that pushed the boundaries of what rock music and a rock band could be.

Stephen Malkmus once said he listened to this album every night for a year. I know how he feels, this never gets old.

Stephen Malkmus of Pavement has been quoted as saying "I played Can's Ege Bamyası album every night before I went to sleep for about three years."

You should have included the fun fact that the band Spoon take their name from the song, "Spoon", on this album. Ege Bamyasi tied with Tago Mago as my second favorite CAN album, Future Days being their best imo. All three of these albums are easily 10/10, though, and the follow up to Future Days, Soon Over Babaluma, is only slightly behind these, easily 9.5/10. I rank Future Days as only slightly above the other two bc it's stylistically a more consistent whole, and because, like Babaluma, it explores more ambient, tranquil territory, while maintaining the psych-kraut artistry of of Ege and Tago. Imo Tago and Ege are companion/brother(or sister) albums if sorts, as are Future and Babaluma. These are the 4 CAN albums you NEED as a music fan, and while the others are great in their ways, CAN these are masterpieces of experimental, psychedelic, and krautrock styles.

pdg887 he's not that bad but that's not the exact pronunciation of 'bamyası'. we don't stress the words that much as he does. also the last letter' ı ' isn't pronounced like 'uh' or 'wuh', nonetheless he pronounces well despite the fact that he's a foreign-speaker.

It wasn't a fan. It was another drummer. Another jazz drummer told Jaki to 'play the same thing' (apparently). Jaki took that advice.

26.12.2005 04:29 ~ 21.02.2020 13:33 cosmo vitelli

I prefer Ege Bamyasi. It's more seductive, beguiling, and unique. I enjoy its abundance of great pop songs and more condensed structure (the second half of "Soup" is like the entire 2nd LP of Tago Mago boiled down to a super potent, sticky resin). Tago Mago is certainly better recorded, but feels more in line with what other heavy psych and jam bands of the era were doing, and is therefore less special to me.
