I add a little Epsom salt to my spray bottle that I use in my hair. I spray a little in my hair when I get out of the shower before I put my products and it definitely works for my wavy curls. The trick is not to use too much. You should be able to smell it in the bottle but not be able to feel it in your hair. Otherwise it will have a gritty film to it and create frizz.
My hair curls up nicely after swimming in the ocean, but it's way too drying. For curly hair sugar spray is the way to go, doesn't dry hair like salt and works very similarly, and apparently xylose sugar (or xylitol) is extremely effective at giving that look while helping maintain moisture in hair. It also works as a good heat protectant apparently. I have been using sugar spray as a curly hair spray for a while now and I love it. It would be great if you did a video like this comparing salt spray and sugar spray 🙂
Yes, sugars can be used as a humectant for hair, but as you mentioned certain types work better than others. Honey and honeyquat are other great examples of sugar being used as a humectant in haircare.
@@tiahnarodriguez3809 Not only for humectants but also for hold. I use mine as curly hairspray but with no drying. It’s also a great root lifter for the wavy types. I have 3B curly hair but my roots insist on pretending they are 2B LOL
When I was younger, I didn't know I had curly hair so I always thought pools were magical. I'd get out of them and my hair would air dry into beautiful waves but it was always so crispy! I hated how it felt but it looked marvelous so I'd leave it for a day or two before washing. Now after years of knowing I have curls, I finally know why the pools did me so great, but so dirty at the same time. Need me some salt spray! 😍
I loved this video!!!! I have extremely fine/thin 3A/3B hair that is SUPER soft. After I put my hair products in my hair and diffuse to about 50% dry, I spritz a homemade sea salt/water mixture into my hair sparingly, then finish diffusing. Using just a little bit of the mixture makes SUCH a big difference in my curls; the sea salt spray gives my soft hair the extra structure/hold it needs and it gives my curls some extra oomf! Salt sprays are definitely worth exploring if you have soft or limp/flat hair like I do ☺️
Omg I just bought a sea-salt spray and was, literally last night, wondering where it would sit in my curly hair routine! I swear you guys can read minds. 😂 Thanks for the video, perfect timing!
Omg I just read your name and it’s spelled the same way as my moms name my moms name. My mom has never ever met someone with the same name spelled the same way. That’s so cool thank you ☺️.
I used k18 & it over moisturized my hair, changed my porosity and I lost my curls. I missed my high porosity and curls. I have been using protein, vinegar, and salt spray and my curls are slowly returning as my hair is getting drier. This makes complete sense after watching this video. Thank you sciency Melly!!
Here to thank you for your collab with Verb on the Curl Foaming Gel. It’s wonderful! It has really good hold without loss of softness, and it gives a really nice shine, especially when paired with the Verb oil. The definition is perfection. There’s barely any scent to it, so it doesn’t compete with any fragrance I choose to wear. It does a really nice job of refreshing 3rd and 4th day hair with a little water. I feel like I’ve found the product I’ve been looking for, finally, after so much trial and failure with other gel-type products. Congratulations, and thanks again! (Note to Verb- do more products with Mell, please! This ish is amazing!)
I've been to the sea once. It was before I realized I had anything but straight hair. I got so many compliments (including from my MOTHER lmao, who is VERY difficult to impress or please) for a few days after being in the sea that I came home from that vacation and immediately looked into sea salt sprays. It's where my love of Verb was first born! And I've missed Scientiffy Mell!
My hair is prone to hydra fatigue and this year I started using salt sprays to fry my hair out and I’ve always noticed since my younger days that getting out from the beach water gave me beautiful defined curls ugh the synchronizations! Lol thank you for discussing this Mel
Mell... i love you.. I wish i knew about you years ago. I grew up being the only curly hair person in my family (recessive genes are strong in this one) so I never knew how to take care of my hair and always hated it. Growing up doing semiannual relaxers and basically anything i could to get rid of them, it was a very miserable childhood lol. But watching your videos and learning how to PROPERLY take care of my hair have given me a whole new appreciation for my natural curls. Thank you for everything you do ♥
Would really love to hear what you have to say about the Lush Sea Salt Spray! Also their curly hair products. Please try them out and let us know what you think! :)
I went to Bali last month and I had my hair in cornrows until I came back home, my curl pattern has never looked better! 😍 I had a feeling it was bc of the saltwater in the ocean I was swimming in almost every day, happy to know I was right! 😂
My curl cream has magnesium sulfate in it so I was so glad when you spoke about curl creams too! Thanks Mell, your advice and expertise is always appreciated! My waves thank you
I already know the answer 😁 when I sweat, my wavy hair goes mega curly, even though I DO NOT want it to. Also, the salts and minerals in hard water make my hair curl. Whenever I go back home to Vancouver from Southern Ontario, the Vancouver soft water leaves my hair soft and in limp waves, the way I like it. Ontario hard water makes my hair curl.
Yessss love it when scientify Mel comes on with some information! Congratulations on being Amanda's made of honor! Also i used your new curl foam for the first time and I'm obsessed 😍
Thank you so much for all the videos, esp this one. I started my wavy/curly journey after going to a new local salonist and she's the first salonist to mention that I had textured hair. Others simply mentioned I had a LOT of hair and would often blow dry it/straighten (a few years ago I was really envious of silky asian hair). But this new salonist was the first to offer to diffuse it and show me the voluminous curls I always had (which I like the look, big fan of 80's curly hairstyles, but I didn't think I could pull it off because my hair was dense and not curly). Since that visit to the salon I looked into my hair type more and have discovered a whole new look for myself I never knew was always there. I've enjoyed wearing my hair down now instead of putting it up. It's hard not to out of habit, but been enjoying the curly to loose waves every week. Sometimes the gels don't hold yet, but I did enjoy the light foaming gel. I LOVE THE MORINGA SERUM. It's a little lighter than coconut when I don't need as much. And have recently discovered the effortless look of salt spray after a trip to a water park. Oddly enough it's the best hold I've had. I could tell my hair felt at home with it. Again, thank you so much for the educational videos, the encouragement, and inspiration.
Dipping my hair in ocean water gives me giant beautiful spiral curls. It's salt and debris giving it more texture, drying it so it holds more curl and the ocean is like a giant bowl for the bowl method.
This video is so eye-opening for me. I've never thought I that I needed a salt spray in my routine because I have fine hair that needs more grit. Thank you !
Oh Mell, I hurt my knee. Took two epsom salt baths (lots of salt). Didn’t think anything about it and just plopped back and enjoyed. My hair has looked awful for a week. None of my usual fixes are working. What should I do?! What do I need ScienTiffy????!
Kristin Ess makes a sea salt foam that is amazing if you’re a wavy haired girl like me!!

Oddly for me, my hair used to get really curly from sea water before I started the curly hair journey and had thought that my hair was straight (or you know, just bushy and a mess - wavy girl here). Salt water was my first hint that maybe my hair was not straight. But then since I started using proper CGM hair products, not just shampoo and conditioner, my hair doesn’t like salt water anymore, it always gets really stringy and shapeless afterwards.
@manesbyMell, the verb CFG is the ONLY product I’ve used that gave me volume at the roots! I was shocked! I am so glad I bought a backup, lol. But you did that girl! Thank you! Nothing else worked on my flat roots! My hair is quite long and I was worried I’d have to chop it to get volume but now I don’t thanks to youuu. 💕. Miracle product for real! 👏🏽
Happy Texture Tuesday!! Love my salt sprays I have fine hair so I need them for the grit they give me hair! My fav would be ag dry lift although it's not technically a salt spray! Love scientify Mell always coming with knowledge!! Much love and happiness!! Xoxo 😘
Well, I tried a salt spray before watching this video because I've recently heard you talk about it in other videos. 😀 This was great information. And the salt spray made my curls look great! Thanks so much, I really enjoy and learn a lot from your videos!
I use the verb sea salt spray maybe once a month and I don't add gel or anything else to it and it really enhances my curls without the crunch. I always finish with an oil after diffusing and then it's good for a week.
I've finally realized that my hair is naturally curly! I'm 57 yrs old. We live in the Florida keys and have a salt water swimming pool. Every time I go out to the pool for a dip and let my hair dry naturally I have these beautiful spiral curls that I would have paid a fortune for back in high school. Not only the pool water but the humidity in the air and when I sweat! So weird! I suppose it's time to throw the blow dryer, the flat iron in the trash and embrace my curly hair. 😅
Amazing video for a mermaid like me! I love swimming in the ocean! 🌊🧜🏻♀️ Also, I was in Hawaii last week and took along your new Foaming Gel! Got to use it for the first time there. I love it!! Posting my review of it soon!🧡➿️🧡
I'm having such issues. If I don't do anything and brush dry it's super puffy. In the shower I see it form waves even before brushing. I use a mousse or a gel and it turns out terrible. I have fine hair but alot of it. It's also not dyed so very natural. I use a slight amount of sea salt spray and it looks beautiful. Tried using mousse and gel and ended looking like a wet dog. Idk maybe my hair just can't use those products. Will stick to the spray.
How the heck are you still so coherent at 3am!!! Not a fan of how “sea salt” sprays make my hair feel, hoping stocks of the AG Fresh Definer are replenished in Australia now they have the new packaging out, it’s been out of stock here for months!
Do you recommend curl define creams? I have 2a-2b hair that has no hold. Also, gels and mousses leaves the hair super dry like straw and too little of them has no hold
This video and it’s comments are really the first time I’m hearing that you could use sugar and salt in your hair. Wow. I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised.
Awesome video once again, Mel!! Quick question while on the topic: do you have any advice for coil training low porosity hair? Bc when I try finger coiling, my hair doesn't absorb any product and it stays greasy and full of residue in my hair, but my hair needs the training. Any advice?
Not sure if this will be helpful but I had the same issue when I was curl training my hair. Its low porosity, and it doesn't matter how many times I tried to finger curl my hair it just looked horrible, the product was just sitting on my hair, etc. What I did instead is on days I wanted to do a deep condition or when I wasn't planning on going anywhere, I would apply my conditioner/deep conditioner and then finger curl every section and then just let that be for the whole day, or until the next day and then wash out and style as normal (scrunching instead of finger styling). Overtime it still made a difference, just took longer since its not finger curled as often or for the actual finished style. Sometimes I'd even style my hair with my curl products, finger curl, and then just let it be on days I wasnt going anywhere so that way its training my hair but no one has to see how bad my hair looks. Not sure what the actual solution would be cuz I never was able to figure it out but this method did end up working out in the end for me.
Great video! I like learning all the scientific stuff. I would like to see an intro to co-washing video. Its something I'd like to try but I'm not sure where to start.
I used to use the John Frieda sea salt stuff for the beachy, coconut smell once upon a time lmao. It was just okay, but it left a tacky feeling to my hair I never quite got over. Bumble & bumbles was the worst imo. It made my hair feel like glue.
Greetings from England! Can't wait to get my hands on your products as soon as they are available! Been thinking, if I travel over to Canada from England... Will Mel do my hair? (Puppy eyes) please?
My hair is not working! I have great products and do everything right(I hope) but by day 2 my curls loosen up and it’s just all frizz. Any advice on how to get waves/curls back after day 1? I tried re-wetting but it just adds more frizz because the curls won’t hold together. I tried protein treatments thinking I might be over conditioning but not much has changed. I stopped coloring years ago and have cut and grown out my hair, and rarely ever use heat. please help!!
Hold up, wait minute. This is the first time I have heard you talk about using a pre-shampoo oil treatment for your dry ends. I've watched you for a couple of years, and generally re-watch a lot of your especially updated wash routines with you and Amanda seester, but I am coming up with a blank on the pre-oil dealio. Can you give me a product suggestion, please. Thank you.
@Manes by Mell I have ultra fine, low density, virgin (untreated/not colored) mixed curls and waves. What prep products would you recommend? I live in a hot, dry, with some days of 90% humidity, climate. Do you recommend the verb leave in or the curl cream? I have purchase the curl kit plus the foam so I do have the full collection arriving soon.
If you live by a beach, DO NOT spend money on sea salt spray, go buy a spray bottle, take a container and fill the container with local ocean water. That's what I did and the water in the container that I have is crystal clear.
I’ve also read that sugar sprays are great for wavy/curly hair. Does anyone know how sugar and salt sprays differ for hold, definition, etc? I was also wondering if salt sprays might be good to make los porosity hair dry faster (reduce hydral fatigue)?
How would you protect your wavy / curly hair on a motorcycle? I am a motorcycle rider and I struggle with protecting my wavy hair at 55 to 60 miles per hour. I live in a state that doesn’t require a helmet, therefore I prefer to go without it, gives you that true wind in your hair feeling - but it’s a lot of wind.
Hi Mel. I noticed that you’re using AG Curl Trigger. Why did you not use AG Beach Bomb? That is what I have using this summer. I have waves of course and I put a little Verb Ghost Oil before I apply AG Beach Bomb. What do you think? TIA
Hey Mel, love your work! You are amazing ❤ Can i please request an episode on what regular pool (chlorine) lap swimmers can do to protect our curls? I swim on average twice a week, I’m in the pool for about an hr.. but my hair suffers and get dry and frizzy.. I don’t have loads of time for treatments because I often rushed to get ready for work in time after a morning swim.. I have tried putting oil on my hair before the swim to make a protective barrier, but then my swim cap slides off ! 😂 ..anyways, any help would be much appreciated 🥰🥰🥰🥰🙌
Hi Mell, I love your videos, you've already helped so much with my curls ❤. Can you recommend a good clarifying shampoo, preferably one that's Curly Girl Method approved? I'm having real trouble finding anything I like! I really wanted to try the Ouidad Twist one, but I can't seem to get in anywhere here. I live in Ireland and products are much harder to come by over here 😅.
My dry damaged hair is lighter and curls better but then I get a worse (than I already have) breakage halo. Healthy well conditioned hair straightens on me. That's why extremely drying mousse gives me great curls but damage
Mell can you do a video about haircuts for curly hair? For example I have a rounded diamond face and every website says that side bangs look good with my face shape. I can’t do a middle part because my part is thinner in the middle. But anyway, my curly hair and side bangs don’t mix so I don’t know what hairstyle to do
What about with chlorine? My 15 yo son has about 3c/4a hair and a lot of it to the middle of his back which shrinks to the middle of his neck once dry. It loves protein... but let tell you when he gets out of a pool, his curls are loving life. Like bouncey defined shiny curls. I almost feel bad washing it after. Me and my girls look like traditional curly nests after a day of swimming... lol!!
This was so helpful I use innersense I create waves occasionally and I do notice i get great results but the next day it doesn't feel so great so I don't use it often. What do you think about redken cat c protein spray? I received my curly hair product's stock up today and included that spray as my hair adores protein. Just wondering what ppls experience is with it?
I finally got the AG Hair Curl Fresh Definer in Australia and my products have been very runny. My salon was replaced it twice, she thinks thrformula is being heated up while beening shipped from Canada. Fingers crossed they the issue soon.
Hi! Mel if you’re watching this, I hope you can help me. If not, maybe someone else can? I’m someone with course/frizzy/wavy curly hair. Whenever I try to heat style my hair, or use a hair straightener. I get major shedding/breakage. What can I do to stop this? I’m not someone who heat styles their hair often, but I do like to heat Style occasionally. Any suggestions would be wonderful!
