Natural World - Super Squirrels
The squirrel family is one of the most widespread on earth, so what is the secret to their success? There are squirrels that can glide through the air, outwit rattlesnakes and survive the coldest temperatures of any mammal. It is time to meet the animal family we should never underestimate - the super squirrels. Narrated by Olivia Colman.
Welcome to Earth Unplugged! We make films about the incredible natural world, we investigate the conundrums, quirks and beautiful science of our amazing planet, delving into the BBC vaults and mixing it up with our own stuff to take a brand new look at Earth.

Yes they can. They are good at solving puzzles!

I can’t believe anyone in the history of squirrel-human interaction had a doubt for even a SECOND that squirrels could solve mazes, no prob.

Amazing, Squirrels are smarter than we thought. That is why they are so good at solving allot of Bird Feeder detering devices. Plus they are stubborn, persistent, and dont give up after first try fails.

The squirrel can just smell it’s most recent route. Not necessarily “remembering” the route. You’d have to supply a “clean” version of the same maze to see if the squirrel actually remembered the paths, recognized it as the same configuration, and remembered where the reward was.

What makes you so sure? Did you know squirrels hide nuts and remember the location of each nut? They do not smell the nuts they remember the location and find the nuts again by examining the environment and remembering where the nut is hidden

My brother, there have been many studies on this, that squirrels and rodents in general have a better memory than humans. Squirrels are the smartest of the rodent family. They bury roughly 10,000 nuts in a year and can remember all locations in which they hid their caches, not just by smell. Read some studies and you'd be surprised what you'd learn. I'm a lab animal technician who works with squirrels as well as other rodents, so I know a great deal about the different kinds of studies and research, and new research that is being done.

So cute ❤❤ Squirrels have very smart brains ;) I love them. They like to play games, solve puzzles.❤❤ When you see them, please be considerate, give them food, and don't hurt them. There are very few safe areas in the forest or city for them.

You need pad that the squirrel will trigger that changes his route. if he goes the wrong way it triggers a block of the first hole and opens another. 3 routes in but only one open at a time. Will they trigger it to get to a faster route to the goodies?

Since squirrels can bury thousands of nuts for winter ,his memory defintely is good or how can he remember where are the nuts? You need a more complicated version of maze ok, hooman.

Weird. These things are so stupid about other things. I can shoot one, and 20 seconds later, another will climb over that one's body for the food. These things will literally crawl over piles of their buddy's corpses seconds after seeing other squirrels get shot. Sometimes they'll start nibbling on the dead squirrels too.

Yeah, and they are unbelievable suicidal when it comes to running in front of cars too. Nothing smart about seeing a massive object coming down the road and running out in front of it versus when your way across is totally clear. Squirrels have some bizarre behavior

Barry-Allen The-Flash I guess it is understandable in an evolutionary sense, though. It was surprising to see that they could do the maze when I've only ever seen them act like mindless eating machines.

Ossie Weldlife I don't kill them for fun. I kill them because they are delicious and hunting them means you don't have to pack as much food when camping. You have to kill at least 5 per person for a good serving.
@OssieWhite
@OssieWhite 6 лет назад
foxhound6364 Something else is imagine if someone 50 feet away from you is pointing their finger and all of a sudden you feel them bite your neck. they're not dumb. humans get sniped all the time and many people on the street run to help them even though they know what a gun is and that the guy still has vantage. Some even loot dead people even though they did not kill them.
@foxhound6364
@foxhound6364 6 лет назад
Ossie Weldlife These squirrels aren't running to help the dead squirrels. They lack the cognitive function to put together that the other squirrels dropping dead in a pile in front of them and the sound of a gunshot means this is a bad situation for them. Instead, they just see whatever food the other squirrels were after as now uncontested or the other squirrels as a new source of food. It makes sense that they evolved that way, but they turned out even less intelligent than your average rat or mouse. Other than fish, they are the least intelligent animal I've hunted. They are cute, though, so people hate when you kill them. I personally feel worse about eating pork, because I used to have a pet pig that was smarter than any dog I've owned.
@OssieWhite
@OssieWhite 6 лет назад
foxhound6364 again as most animals are afraid of the sound of gunshots squirrels are more aware of their most likely predator, Owls If they heard an owl or saw one swoop another up they would run for cover. The thing is that their opportunistic instincts focus on not starving instead of saying " I might drop dead out of coincidence as well." also like how you just said fish are dumb they're not humans are some of the most cunning deceptive and innovative creatures on the face of the planet so to have to trick them into biting a hook means that they are smart. Be honest if you saw three $100 dollar bills or £300 rolling around on the sidewalk you would not think sniper.
@foxhound6364
@foxhound6364 6 лет назад
Ossie Weldlife lol. I guess I wouldn't but if I saw a stack of bodies next to the money, I'd start having my suspicions. I know that they evolved that way, I'm just saying that as far as animals go, they are some of the least adaptive and run almost purely on instinct, like a fish. Other animals like deer have actually been shown to remember what time of year deer hunting season begins and ends and behave differently during them. They'll notice if there are humans or other predators in an area, and remember not to go there, etc. You could shoot a squirrel in the leg, and it would come back ten seconds later to try to get the food again, over and over, and it wouldn't ever be able to determine that the area should be avoided.

“If you place a huge pack of rats into a labyrinth, at least one of the rats will find the exit. The rats successful escape is not related to it's intelligence, nor is it a wonder or something mysterious. Given the law of averages it would very surprising if none of the rats will able to find the way out.”
