I was gaining weight but once I cut bread I started losing weight. I just ate more sweet potatoes, potatoes, rice, beans, vegetables, fruit. Whole Foods is the way to go. Breads, pastas are not everyday foods.
Did she eat super low fat consistently? Much of the time this is the missing component of high starch working well. Also there is a transition also finding the starch that works for your bodies weaknesses that still need to heal. This is not always true of course but much of time it is an issue, people not taking their fat low enough for starch to work well. Even moderate veg fat and high starch doesn’t work well for many people. Then there is my 6’5” husband that can eat anything and stay slim. He is active and does mild intermittent fasting tho.
I couldn't imagine chips and cokes are vegan foods. Maybe junk food snacks that we may crave for from time to time. Maybe out at a party...but not having them at home. That might help....only my guess
I'm a little confused. Is this a starch eating plan or a resistance starch eating plan? I thought it was a RESISTANCE starch plan( eating starches after they have been cooked and cooled) but I don't see many people making the distinction. From what I understand, resistance starch is good for gut health, weight loss, and does not affect blood sugar levels.
Just eat starch. You cant eat a raw potatoes or beans rice, wheat and those are the staples. You might get some raw starch from carrots, bell peppers or something but those don't have enough calories to live on but they do add to microorganism diversity when you eat raw foods.
it's not a resistant starch eating plan. it's probably also impractical to recommend everyone to follow such a plan, because it requires foresight - preparing your food hours, if not longer, in advance. "does not affect blood sugar levels" you might've misspoken here. blood sugar levels are lower when eating resistant starch compared to eating the same food after just cooking it, but it will not make your blood sugar levels not spike.
Im my case resistant starch avoids blood glucose rebounds if eating starch alone. When eating recently cooked starch, I try not to dehydrate them too much and combine them with other high fibre veggies, then my overall glycemic rise should be OK. This helps with overeating.
Just eat starch, some of the starches you eat may be resistant starch, it's not something you need to worry about. Eat plenty of no starchy veg with it.
Chef AJ and Dr. McDougall, thank you both for the incredible work and legacy you are creating. I did go on a WFPB diet last year and efortlessly lost around 20 pounds, but went back to dairy and fish regretably and regained all the weight pretty quickly. I started again approximately a month ago. I adhere strictly to the Starch solution, but I admit I eat small amounts of nuts almost daily and very small amounts of avocados. I am doing it mainly for weight loss, but despite dropping a few pounds so far, it's come to a halt, and it's frustrating from week to week to not see the scale move downward. I exercise daily and eat exlusively low density foods. Any encouragement or advice on how to break the plateau? Thank you very much!
@CHEFAJ I see your point, however, the amount I eat is hardly contributing around 200 calories per day in my estimation. A small avocado last me several days. The diet is restrictive enough as it is. But I'll try to eliminate the nuts and see what happens. Thanks for responding.
Poor North Koreans don’t get enough to eat of anything with some exceptions; maybe that has something to do with their very thin condition. I’m not against Dr McDougall’s approach but North Koreans are probably not a good example.
Thanks! I haven't tried it yet. I'm wondering if one would have constant cravings on this diet or if this would be medigated with adding a few veggies?
I encourage you to try a cleanse of sorts only using oatmeal, fruit if necessary. I use stevia. No added fats. Try it for 5-7 days. Use lots of water when cooking for easier bowel transport of the extra fiber. Drink lots of water, herbal tea coffee if you drink it. I did it and lost more weight and wasn’t trying as I’m already quite slim also in menopause making it harder for most to stay lean. Anyway it has made me convinced starch is not the problem it’s fat. I’m getting about 25g fat from oats. I’m eating as much as it takes to fill me up. I eat cooked barley too. I don’t know if it’s all the resistance starch or what but I’m hardly hungry. Today I went 21hrs fasted and I could have kept going easy but I wanted to eat out of habit and it tastes good. I think potatoes would probably do the same but my kidneys have trouble with them, oxalates I suppose.
If you overfill your glycogen stores you will transform excess glucose to fat. The clue is to keep satisfied enough to have time burn your glycogen as you consume it. If you fill up on potatoes before you burn them you will eventually gain fat. For most people this is difficult, but some use food as pain relief and can override their satiety signals and gain fat even in a 50-50 strict starch solution nutrition. I myself have gain weight eating 5kg of (SOS free) baked pumpkin a day + broccoli, as crazy as it may sound. Mc Dougalls solution makes things easier, since it helps you to get in touch with your Leptin and Stomach capacity signalling. But as said, any health food can be abused as anxiety relief and create fat gain. This said, those who overindulge within a McDougalls compliance of health food will be heavier, but probably have their lipid profiles on check and plenty of vital energy (plus serious fibre poops too!)
Starchy foods like breads, potatoes, pasta, noodles, cereal, crackers, rice, and corn are broken into sugars by your body. These sugars can become triglycerides if large amounts of starchy foods are eaten. So, the excess starch you eat (i.e. - that you don't burn) becomes the fat you wear!
Chef AJ i try the atarch solution for secod time, but i think that the weight don't go down as fast as the first time, im leas tte 2 weeks stach to this type of diet, that i love. What can i do? The first time oh my gosh the weight melts so fast
My blood pressure is coming down so beautifully. However now i am starting o eat where i am stuffed and i eat constantly. How can i stop this i am also trying to lose weight. Thank you
I know what you're talking about, as I've struggled with it as well eating like this. For me personally, I need to increase protein and fat to achieve true satiety (I can't do 80/10/10, it's just not filling for me). Increase protein (more tofu, opt in more for higher protein starches like beans, peas, lentils) and/or fat (add some nuts, seeds). Be mindful about what is more satisfying for you and stick to that.
you shouldn't generalise like this. you can easily reach a point where eating just starch will not yield you anymore results, but still remain overweight. that's where Dr McDougall recommends to decrease starch and increase veggies. you can also gain weight eating starch, even if you are overweight. it's just about calorie balance.
