Can Starmer reset Britain’s relationship with the EU? | The News Agents

Keir Starmer is in Berlin, this time for some real politics, not a football match. He’s meeting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, unveiling a new UK/Germany defence agreement. Later he’s heading to Paris to meet President Macron. The new government is on a charm offensive, with much lofty talk of a reset of UK/EU relations post-Brexit. But is that really possible? How much is just vibes? Lewis and Jon analyse what has happened and crucially what has not happened, and are joined in News Agents HQ by German Ambassador Miguel Berger.
We also talk about whether there’s any truth that Mr Mandelson might be going to Washington and Jon is shilling for his book again. What fun.

I was on one of the first UK - EU student Exchange trips between the UK & Germany, in the late1980's. It's utterly perverse, that we have undone decades of cooperation, & goodwill and inflicted so much self harm on the UK with Brexit. We can't afford to spend decades, repairing all this again. A minimum starting position, should be re-joining the Customs Union or the EEA. Neither of which would mean accepting free movement. It's not rocket science. It just requires some political will. Which seems to be sadly lacking in Keir Starmer's administration...

I didn't do the Erasmus scheme but I had the benefit of going to a college built by the EU social fund. The UK lost so much investment in poorer areas by exiting the EU. The Tories said they would replace the European Social Fund money, but it never happened. I'm still mad at how the UK was allowed to self sabotage the economy just so the hard right of the Tory party could seize power. They took complete advantage of not having to follow EU directives protecting workers, finance, and the environment.

EEA/SM requires freedom of movement. All EFTA countries have to accept freedom of movement. The EU's CU is not open to non-EU members. Turkey has a partial customs union with the EU, but it is not included in the EU's free trade agreements.

Haven't ever heard this from EU, this is a British invention, that they need us for defense. Since both are in Nato, and Nato organises and oversees defense, there really is no need for any of this. And as I said, it is not something the EU wants, but something that Britain says the EU wants. And there you have the critical difference!

Full implementation of the TCA, restart Erasmus and do the Youth Mobility Scheme. It has always been 'irregular ' immigration, as in the UN treaty on refugees, which states explicitly that in many cases irregular entry in a country in order to seek asylum there, is often necessary. This is a return to what Britain has signed up to. The anomaly was the last Tory government, who falsely labelled it illegal immigration. This was to blame asylum seekers for all ills in their culture war efforts. Had it ever been illegal, then clearly the police would have arrested asylum seekers on arrival. Funnily the police did not! Culture war was a Tory hate thing and thankfully, it is over. Back to normal with irregular migration, as Yvette Cooper made clear from day one. Do catch up, please!

@@zonianfjb I would have thought the long term loss of at least 4% of GDP is too high a price to pay for Brexit. Going it alone is always more difficult and more expensive. CPTPP on the other side of the globe is not capable of replacing anywhere near that long term Brexit loss to GDP

It is not a deal, or a treaty as Starmer would say in the sense of the TCA wich is a treaty. It is little more than writing down what both parties would like to cooperate better on. Starmer is egging this up for home consumption. Listen to news abroad to get the other side of the story. Anything that falls under Brussels, like mutual trade, cannot , behind Brussel's back, be put in a 'treaty' anyway. Just like the bigged up Trade Deal that Badenoch did with Italy, which is equally meaningless, because in the EU's single market, Brussels does trade rules, not individual countries. But then Badenoch also did a 'biggly' trade deal with Florida, same deceit, because the United States does not do trade deals with individual states either. These things are bigged up into treaties, but to call them a memorandum of understanding or another much lesser form of terminology, would be more appropriate. Who advises these ministers in this and in the last administration!

I don’t see the UK getting a trade deal with the USA. Northern Ireland is a problem to a deal, plus the USA would prefer to do a deal with the EU. Doing a deal with a small country with only 2% of the world GDP floating in the water just offshore, would be a bad move. Ps. A USA-EU trade deal could take decades!

USA and EU have any number of mini deals with each other. Literally almost only agriculture with the much lower USA standards is excluded. @LeafHuntress
@LeafHuntress 28 дней назад
@@aleph8888 One can leave the CPTPP with a simple note, nothing else required. So if Starmer sends that e-mail today, the UK is out by, wanted to say April, but probably the ratification would stop & the UK wouldn't even enter. Why would anyone even be happy with that horrid CPTPP? Have you seen those secret courts? Not that it would have any bearing on the EU. While Starmer could be more ambitious, he's dedicated to the Labour Manifesto that ruled out some things because of the brexit voters. Plainly spoken, he wouldn't have been voted into #10 without it. But you seem to be labouring under a disillusion that more is possible just if the UK wants it. Wrong. For the EEA, a country must be a member of either EFTA or the EU. The UK at this moment has NO CHANCE to join either of them. Shengen could be an option for Gibraltar, but not the UK because of the CTA. A CU is possible after looooooooooong negotiations. But first the UK NEEDS to do what it has promised to do. Nothing will happen until the UK actually implement that "oven ready deal."

Starmer is all about the economy, the EU is all about peace, people and integration via joint economy and ease of trading projects. The former is selfish for Britain only, the latter is to improve all of our economies (and people) and benefit all EU countries. This true levelling up is way too socialist an idea for Starmer, it seems. In the EU trading is a means of getting the real EU values of wellbeing and progress for all. In Britain it is trading profitably for the benefit of Britain, not even for the benefit of the British people. In Britain GDP is far more important than people. There you have the rub. I want better just for me versus we want better to benefit all of our people. It has always been the British problem, that wanted trade advantages in the EU and did not want the EU values as collaboration and friendship of the people of all EU countries. In Britain EU people are ruddy foreigners, same as all other foreigners, whereas in the EU, people from other EU countries are our people too, who have every right to live in our country as equals, as we do in their countries. Churchill's United States of Europe idea outlined in his Zurich speech. Britain, both under the tories as now under Labour, doesn't want a bar of it. Doesn't even understand it.
