Down here in central Florida Me, my father and grandfather have always used those over fiddlers to catch sheepshead and black drum. We don't call the mud crabs, though. We call them rock crabs as on our end they're mainly found under rocks that are just under the edge of the waterline.

This is true about the mud crab but the trouble is mud crabs are actually baby stone crabs and they are illegal to harvest. Check with the dept of natural resources.

The reason you’re catching bigger sheep pad on mud crabs, as they are a lot more durable bait. Those big sheep had are really smart when it comes to cleaning hooks.. Another tip that commercial fisherman use is to slash the tip of the rod, Making the splashing sound, which brings me to your other observation that you may have spooked the sheep head away when you caught that nice sheepshead it’s really the opposite. That’s why the commercial guys make a commotion. They also use jigs little white bucktails. Once they get them into a feeding frenzy this is best Dan during late March and April at offshore tide, signal stations or other structure but they like the jetty rocks also I have watched four guys with Kane poles probably 2000 pounds the whole bottom of the boat they weren’t even icing them properly they would just yank them like the tuna videos of old. They were the fish use its momentum to pull themselves into the boat with the use of the cane pole and they fall off after flopping and they slap the water again with the camp pole and back on another fish so you didn’t spook them they were not there and you had caught what was pretty much at that spot or you made too much noise doing something else that wasn’t on video . What you can also do is order finger bandages. It is called surgitube Get “small “it comes in a roll I wanna say there’s 10 feet in the role what you do is tie a knot then about an inch and a half above cut it off or tie, another knot and then cut it. It’s close to the knot as you can get, but only leaving about an inch and a half of bag to cover finger wounds. tie a knot in the surgery tube and cut above the knot about an inch and a half then trim the knot as close to it as possible then get a large veterinary syringe or turkey, baster syringe drill, the center out or you get one that is about is bigger around as your index finger and cut it off at the end then you pack oysters barnacles little pieces of shrimp pretty much anything this works really good for catfish with chicken livers. Then you take the syringe, put it inside the finger bandage fill it then tie it shot with the hook it is almost impossible to get off and the bait stays good. You can literally catch 10 sheep head without ever having to rebate if you put those on cane pole and slap the top of the water that should really work better than just chumming them and using a white bucktail barbless.. anyway I enjoyed your video. I’ve been a commercial fisherman in Florida since 2001 another way to get them if the water is clear worked really well is with a Hawaiian sling pole spear you take a piece of half inch diameter aluminum pipe cut the half inch pole at the end leaving about 2 inches of fiberglass spear attached to the end where you put the surgical band or sling spear band, combine the two together and you get a 6 foot pole spear with a 4 foot extension then you glue the end of the pole sphere into the extension and the extension insert a dowel it keeps it from bending, except in the connection spot which makes it easy to straighten the other thing straight up so you don’t bend at least until you get the actual pole spear in your hand never lift by the aluminum like you were using a fishing pole but this is something I learned over the years, take a PVC that is three-quarter inch it will slide over the tip spear and the connections you drill a hole in the T that’s open put a piece of Paracord with a hang around your wrist and one through the PVC tube so it can slide. I call it a safety slide because when you pull that rubber band back you’ve got basically stretched out for the length of the entire extension. And when you were released the spear, if it comes out of your hand, it is attached to your wrist because believe me diving to the bottom to get your spear back is no good sometimes you can throw a Cassnet to get it back if you’re not fishing where it’s muddy (I know there’s a lot of mistakes. This is voice text and I’m not correcting them all. I just wanna apologize I had to edit to be clear about what I was talking about )That’s why it’s important to get the longest pole spear you can get but you have to know the outside diameter. It has to be a half inch otherwise it won’t work you can use a headlamp and do this at night or underwater lights like floundering and destroy them while they’re sleeping against the back sides of the pylon in the current break .. oh one other very crucial detail, always drill a small hole in both of your connections to put a set screw you stainless Panhead and the tip use Loctite and a bunch of it. Make sure you leave it dry for a couple of days before you use it I’ve had them literally spin off the big ones swimming in a circle and I lose the $20 tip and the fish.. I also shoot them Using a bow fishing rig . I made my living selling sheep pad for a while a few years it’s when they’re not spawning you cannot get them into a frenzy the only place to do that is offshore if you’ve got like a tower or a big pile of rocks below you within about a mile and a half to 2 miles from shore… I know this is a lot of information but if you want to catch a lot of sheep, use the surgical tubing bandage for your finger and fill it with oysters. It doesn’t take much and you can collect them off of the shoreline or pylons that comes in really handy fiddlers are hard to come by… I hope this helps you in someway if you’re going to be in a spot that has a lot of pilings like say under a loading dock where there are hundreds of pylons a floor scraper there about 16 inches long with a metal blade you can get them at Home Depot. Unfortunately, you cannot get them in stainless… Sorry, it’s a long long post and I hope it makes before a good fishing trip because I wear their ass out or at least I don’t go that much anymore. I still have my commercial license with a restricted species endorsement but I don’t do it as a main employment… it’s too easy to stay poor being a commercial fisherman it’s only the rich guys that sell the quota to the poor guys that really make the money because they don’t do any work. They have no expenses and they make more off of the fish than the fisherman that does have all of the expenses it’s vertical integrated form of capitalism it’s extremely abusive it’s the same with medical marijuana in states like Florida where they’re getting $5000 a pound by keeping it illegal and only allowing seven growers or companies to open dispensaries grow the weed transport every stage of marijuana production they got their hands in and just like the marine patrol they’re not there to help you I’ve been in a storm at night with my vessel, broken down in the bay, we were approached searched. I asked them if they could tell me back to save harbor. They told me I needed to call Towing, and as much as they could do was call someone that I know to come and get us. I guess they could’ve done another thing and wrote us tickets but we were fully legal so they could suck on it but they’re not there to help you Policy enforcers that produce probable cause, and search people for no reason, I’ve been searched twice by the same marine patrol officer in the same day while I was on fish, making me dump everything into the floor and measure all of the fish. The second time I told him he’s going to have to do his job I’m not doing it if he wants to my boat it’s his labor not mine, I don’t get paid to search boats.. dude cost me a bunch of money that day. That’s not the only time I’ve been stopped multiple times, and searched on a single trip. they used to give a safety sticker and you could request them. Every time you were pulled over they stopped doing that I would’ve loved a half dozen stickers on that old aluminum commercial boat like you see on Swamp people and then I would’ve given them a piece of my mind. Every time they pulled me over, but it’s just to be polite and go along with the tyranny. But that is the reason commercial fisherman take more than they’re supposed to get caught. They’re the ones that suffer the consequences but one bad trip takes at least two more just to make up for it and they better be good trips good trips to make up for all of your expenses and labor, because you’ve still got to pay the rich man that’s why people go over their limit they’re poor not because they just want to break the law. The system is set up to keep the rich from doing a fucking thing and making more than the fisherman, some seafood markets like the one they made the TV show big Fish Texas, that guy owns 7% of the quota in the Gulf of Mexico snapper is 799 a pound wholesale that’s what he pays the fisherman but he holds the quota and he charges 450 a pound for the quota so the fisherman actually bring him free and give him $.50 a pound to make three bucks a pound🤬 that’s the same reason medical marijuana is over $5000 a pound and in Michigan it’s 1000 or less because it’s illegal there. They use the cops just like the marine patrol as their coercion force just like the mafia has its collectors and enforcers… sorry went off on a tangent too much coffee. Good luck to you. I hope those tips work out you should try them. They do make a product called the bait pouch system. They’re pretty expensive though. It’s a better product than the bandage, but they work the same they’re just a lot more user-friendly because they’re in premade bags like you use for catching carp.. I think you can use those, but I’ve never been able to find them small enough they were like an inch and a half wide and that’s too big. at least I think it is I’ve never tried them but they look like they would work perfect if they were a little smaller, they may work perfect the way they are
