How do you feel when you hear someone chewing, slurping or even breathing? If like Ruth, it sends you into a total rage - you could be suffering from the neurological condition misophonia. While many people find certain sounds off-putting or annoying, misophonia causes sufferers to have a disproportionately negative reaction to specific things they hear. But what are it’s triggers, and how can you treat it? We’ll be speaking to Clinical Psychologist, Dr Florian Vogt, as well as sufferer Michelle Davies, who says she feels like she could ‘explode’ every time she hears her husband sniff!

I definitely have this condition, the number of times I've felt like punching people eating and drinking loudly near me.... there's no need to eat like a toddler or a farm animal

Sometimes you’re hearing it a lot more intensively than what is happening actually with them.

Some people chew loudly even though their mouth is completely closed. It's probably something wrong to do with the jaw in those cases, so not everyone can help when they chew loudly, just wether or not they chew with their mouth open or closed.

I am another one. My pet hate, is a breakfast function. The noise of the cutlery clanging drives me crazy. I just don’t go to any eating functions anymore. Another one being on the phone and someone starts eating. I always say now, ring back when you have finished your food it is extremely debilitating

Sadly like many manners and considerations , table manners are a thing of the past - (and I don’t mean daft ones like drinking your tea with your little finger extended - I mean not chewing with your mouth open and slapping like an animal or shouting into your mobile phone in a restaurant 😕)

She doesn’t make the tea too hot. Tea is hot. People have to wait for food and drink to cool before eating.

😊 tea too hot so thats why he slurps. Dont buy that some people are attenrion seekers. They love to make noise its like saying I am here notice me. If the tea is too hot all he has to do is cool it down. Ruth you should bring a set of ear plugs for travel. Fidgeting and drumming fingers is a trigger as is fake coughing.

These aren’t people trying to make a fuss. The feeling is one of rage towards the person making the noise and it’s not a conscious thought. It’s a serious problem that wrecks relationships

In individuals with this syndrome, the irritating sounds are processed in the limbic system casing an extreme fight or flight response. The ability to apply reason and logic in these moments is nonexistent and out of the person’s control. Interview an audiologist rather than a psychologist to understand this syndrome.

I know a lot of noisy eaters & people who are not triggered by ANYTHING. I’ve walked out restaurants, the cinema, family gatherings. I eat Christmas dinner alone 😅

This is started for me as child at the breakfast table. My brother would always choose crunchy cereal & I smacked him with my spoon & burst his lip. I become enraged.

The list of triggering sounds is just endless. Thankfully now I’m using noise cancelling headphones & sound therapy otherwise I’d end up in prison 😅

I’ve been wearing headphones for almost THREE HOURS this morning because my Dad’s video games AND my moms max-volume radio are just SO LOUD. About a third of the time I’ve been wearing headphones today have been spent CRYING because I just can’t get away! Sometimes it gives me suicidal thoughts because it’s just so stressful! I want to live life. I want to go and do the things I enjoy… but because of misophonia I just CANNOT do anything! Whenever I ask someone to stop making a noise, they just tell that I’m fussy or rude… it really annoys me! Some noises I don’t even know why I don’t like them, like why?! It shouldn’t be annoying and yet that trigger sound just makes me R A G E ! Every single day I just have to sit there with my headphones and accept my fate. I’ve tried to get away. But I just can’t. Next year, I’m going to Japan with my family, but how am I meant to enjoy it if I have really bad misophonia? Sometimes even if I’m wearing headphones just even SEEING them make that sound ENRAGES me to the point where I just want to throw myself out the window… heck maybe even I’ll through THEM out the window, I don’t know!

I jus turn off any video with people in love with their mouth noises assuming others should change, not them. I get very angry at people like him. So egotistical and rude. Spoiled by their parents? Childishly stubborn attitudes to adjusting their beloved mouth noises, spit slurping, as if they enjoy their right to be disgustingly annoying. To drive others away.
