Can't Stop the Music: Musical Hell Review #22 

I didn't know Caitlyn Jenner used to act. I'm glad she stopped.

The "almost didn't have their costumes" thing gave me an idea - what if instead of the members showing up with fully-formed styles (which don't fit into the narrative), the group starts out struggling to find an image, and before their first show their costumes don't get delivered and they have to make do with the stranger items left behind, creating their personas and integrating their eclectic styles into the narrative?

'The Cirque Du So-Gay' XD I'm dying!

Fun fact: When they were filming the ending scene of the movie, they made it a publicized concert and invited Village People fans to see it, only for those fans to be drag queens that totally clashed with the producer's vision! Also can you believe the movie cost $20 million to make? that's a lot of money in 1980, and supposedly the majority of it was spent on coke. Honestly I'm not surprised!

"If they're auditioning singers, why do they have all these other acts showing up?" Eye candy? Movie filler? "The Gong Show's" popularity? They didn't want to wait 25 years for RU-vid? I'm just spit-balling here.

Dear Musical Hell, You were able to figure this plot out better than I could. And I applaud you for it.

Fun fact: this movie had a tie-in ice cream flavor at Baskin Robbins called Can't Stop The Nuts. (Yes, really.)

My friend and I were given two complimentary passes to this movie when it premiered in Oklahoma City. I was working in a record store at the time. Half of the audience didn't even stay for the second half of the movie. But, we were vigilant and stayed until the bitter end. We were in tears describing how bad the movie was to our friends later in the bar.

"Gemini, my hoof! You're bipolar!" That had me dying. 😂

Speaking of... the fashion in this movie! I mean why is it that males no longer proudly bare their upper thighs anymore?

I had just realize something; doesn't Samantha come off as a hypocrite? Throughout the film, she hated being treated as a sex symbol thanks to her modeling career. Complaining that the producers she would just ask her out to dinner and saying that it's just "the casting couch". THEN Samantha goes out of her way to try to seduce her ex time and again. You know, going along with the good old "casting couch" she had despised.

Good Lord of Darkness, you could fill up a Cliché Bingo sheet with this movie.

WOW, I love this movie on a camp level but it does make me p glad that The Village People and Caitlyn Jenner never really did any more acting

"Can't Stop The Music" seems painful, but you made watching it seem like a lot of fun.

"Do the Shake" is AWESOME. It's dumb on purpose and it's catchy as hell...I can't stop singing it.

I will say, the actors are fine when they're just doing silent reactions. Like Guttenberg before the group goes on at the end, that was a nice moment. There's just no good way to say most of the dialogue, lol. As for the Village People, they had some good moments of wry humor, I think they could have been trusted with a bit more. As you say, they disappear for too long in a movie supposedly about them!

The video alludes to it, but I love the fact that Jack’s mother is played by June Havoc, the real life “Baby June” from Gypsy, and the sister of Gypsy Rose Lee.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the Village People's cheese-tastic 70's hits "YMCA", "Go West" & "In the Navy", but this hot mess of a movie won't be on my watch list anytime soon. It is almost a shame that they fell so fast though.

You wanna hear something weird? In Australia on New Years Eve, one of the main news channels, Channel Nine, would for some reason play this film... THIS film. And I don't know why.

There was one really funny thing that came out of the movie, though more in a meta way. Alan Carr (one of the most flamboyantly gay men of a very flamboyant era, seriously he had a hell of a life) actually trolled Baskin-Robbins into releasing a special flavor of ice cream as a commercial tie-in with the movie's release. It was called: Can't Stop the Nuts. Nice bit of revenge for not being allowed to feature openly gay characters. Brilliant bit of trolling.

How the hell did Guttenberg become the most-hired actor in Hollywood for a while a few years later? He is gratingly, painfully, obnoxiously bad in this. He talks like the most annoying nine-year-old on the planet. _"It's not faaaaiiiir..."_ And the less said about Jenner, the better!

As far as there being no long term risks, that was them trying to ape 1930's movie musicals where anyone with a song and dream could just walk into a theater or studio and become a star. Thing is, THOSE movies weren't 2 hours, hehe. Well, regardless, I have to admit Can't Stop the Music just makes me bizarrely happy for some reason, lol. Thing with flops is, they often break a lot of conventional rules and sometimes that can be very refreshing, despite the occasional cringe. ;)

Just one "just happens" goes wrong and the music is stopped.

I'd like to hear more about Valerie & Nancy fighting! Valerie is an Oscar nominated actress, I'd figure she'd have one or two decent line reading.

"Can't Stop The Music" is my favorite 8 track tape. "Sound Of The City" by David London is truly awesome.

Had Tim Curry played Sam’s (gay male) friend, this movie would have been 30% better. And 60% campier.

My band did that song once and in the "breakdown" march off finale we playing na na na na...FOR THREE FULL MINUTES while only a single saxophonist went wild trying to play the "Jude" response 30 different ways... Everyone thought he was having a blast...until that student went up to the conductor and told him to find another soloist lol.

This movie looks awful but just the right amount of "so bad it's fun" that makes me wanna watch it.

Though the Disco craze was over by the time this movie came out in the US, it was just ramping up in Australia where its popularity pushed the movie into the black. Well, almost.

Astounding that this movie and "Xanadu" existed contemporaneously with "All That Jazz".

This movie was rated PG - and features topless women, jockstrap-wearing men, and full-frontal male nudity. Fun for the whole family!

Allan Carr must be so full of shit, he said that Bruce Jenner was gonna be the Robert Redford of the 80's and that the movie is a revolution and is launching new careers because we need new stars because Warren Beatty, Ryan O'Neal, and Robert Redford are all over 40.

Awww, no… I love this movie! I even hunted it down on eBay! Hell, even my son enjoys it, and he's nearly 9, so definitely not this movie's _intended_ audience or the generation who would've lived through the time in which the movie is set! It's not a perfect movie, for sure; it's not even a _great_ movie, I'll concede. But it _is_ very good & immensely enjoyable, IMHO! 🤷🏻‍♀️🥰❤️

Channel Nine in Australia screen this every New Years Eve for those too drunk and/or lazy to leave the house.

The funniest part of the movie is how all the Village People (and everyone else) had to be straight, because it was 1980 and you couldn't have gay main characters, especially not portrayed in a positive light.

Did... did they cast the village police as straight men? And I think poor Bruce was doing double duty playing a straight man ALSO playing a straight man, and not a glamorous lesbian.

CSTM is corny and cheesy and has it's moments But too few. And Village People. And it was released when disco was paws up. It would have been more interesting with actual plot and with more Village People. But Valerie nails Samantha and the film damaged her career.

I tried it several times but never made it through that movie. It is really one of the worst flicks ever made. I even struggle to make it through this review.

This film is considered a bomb, but our theatre did fantastic business with it for the first weekend. No good after that, of course, but disco wasn't entirely dead yet. XANADU a year later did, however, flop; it was a nearly empty theatre for three miserable weeks. h

The headdress makes me really uncomfortable. I mean in the context of “That’s just how that band member dressed” it’s still much, but in the context of a movie where that character is dressed like that 24/7, it comes off as basically blackface. In fact, why are the band members dressing up as their personas in a universe that’s supposed to be the real world? It comes off like I’m watching a cartoon. And if I wanted to watch a cartoon, I’d either go watch an actual cartoon or a Deadpool movie.

For the first time since February 24, 2020, I'm about to rewatch the "Can't Stop the Music" episode. EDIT- 12:44 P.M.: *finishes review 22 minutes later* This movie was *much* worse than I remembered it being! 👎
