The subscription model and stepped payment is how businesses are adapting to the digital age and a cost of living crisis. The Kemper Player is the first example of stepped pricing so it's taken the brunt but it allows Kemper to retain the value of their IP and give customers access to the platform cheaper and then add functionality down the road when they can afford it. It's a perfectly valid argument to say that it's over priced and the market is entitled to look elsewhere. What I don't understand is the argument (made in this comment section and elsewhere) that they've done something unethical. The Player delivered what it promised. Then later gave the option to upgrade to the flagship ability for more money. That way Kemper don't devalue their IP. They're not a charity, they're a business with staff etc. Kemper invested the R&D into profiling tech and then Tonex have offered it cheaper at scale no doubt massively denting the companies profits. No one is saying that BOSS pedals should be cheaper because you can get a knock off from Behringer for £20. Same premise.

Nah, if they want to survive they need to make a product that's actually worth buying in today's market. Kemper lost me after how they handled the player updates thing. Especially when they posted the tonejunkie video of him essentially insulting and ranting about Kemper customers. Kemper hardware is outdated, the software isn't even out of beta and still has a lot of problems with the player upgrades, and they're too stubborn to admit it. I'm never buying a Kemper product again.

@@Βετο 'I want everything cheap or free' = entitled. Customers are perfectly capable of taking their custom elsewhere. Expecting a business to cripple itself because customers always want everything cheaper is almost toddler expectations of the world. I don't agree with TJ on everything but he was bang on on this front. Kemper didn't promise any of that extra functionality on launch of the player. They offered a way to upgrade the smaller form factor to the capability of the flagship whilst maintaining the value of the IP. Neural released a crippled smaller product as well. I'd imagine for the same reason. What business wants to devalue its products. You can always buy a Tonex One.

Couple of thoughts: 1) Don't have too many profiles in the unit - this slows down boot time and response time. You don't need your entire library on the unit. I use the local rig manager library for this and it helps a lot. Right now I have 161 profiles and 125 performances loaded out of the thousands I have on the PC. 2) Don't have the rig manager connect to the cloud unless you want to. It takes forever to update and you generally don't need the access. 3) I found that using the rig manager and the unit causes problems when you go back and forth between them. The looper pop is an example. Boot the unit without rig manager and this should clear up. They could definitely improve the performance of using both unit and RM at the same time. 4) The delays are great. Every delay has ducking, mod, freeze, tape age, grit, swell, reverse and other features generally only found in certain delay types of other modelers. For example it was quite easy to replicate a Halo delay using dual delay, mod and cross feedback. Something I could not do on Strymon except for the DIG 5) Instead of modeling particular effects Kemper tends to model a general purpose effect that can be changed to emulate most common effects. I like this approach more than what Helix does by modeling certain effects. You don't need a Tape delay model if the general model can sound the same. 6) performance mode is fantastic. I generally use 5 different gains in the amps and almost never use a overdrive. This is much more natural sounding to my ear keeping the same tonal qualities while increasing the gain. My current favorite is a Michael Britt performance for the Morgan PT with my own choice of effects. slot 1 is completely clean all the way to slot 5 which is full on gain. 7) I also have an Iridium, HX Stomp and Fractal AX8 so I am use to using all four environments. That being said I find that I use the Kemper most. Sound and feel are just great. 8) I disagree about the rig manager. I find the controls easy to use and in fact like it better than Helix and fractal for editing. Yes, the fractal can do much more crazy stuff like adding LFO to a parameter but general I only use fairly straight forward effects. 9) Yes, the boot time and display kind of suck. 10) I also like the fact that, for the toaster, many live edit controls are on the front panel and not buried in menus. 11) CPU is not an issue. You can have 8 delay or reverbs if you want. Not sure why other mfg's can't support more than one or two at a time. 12) form factor is not as small as AX8, HX stomp or FMx but you do get real time access to controls. Probably why I keep the HX stomp. Anyway, just my experience with the three environments and if I could only have one it would be the Kemper.

@@mehAudioWhat about updating the profiling tech to the level of the NAM Player specs? More accurate profiles and less latency. There is still room to improve for Kemper. Many find the Neural DSP, Tonex, NAM, etc to sound more accurate than Kemper on captures/profiles. Also, they could improve on the hardware. It’s really in need of a more modern update. Touch screen. Better processing to allow for better and more effects. Sounds like a cop out to say nothing can be improved and not a good business strategy in my opinion.
@mehAudio
@mehAudio 2 часа назад
@@pizzaisgood4877 and how do you quantify better? As far as I can tell, it‘s a toss-up between toneX, QC and Kemper, depending on the amp profiled. There is one hardware device with NAM so far, but really too early to say if it‘s generally better. At 700 bucks I doubt it. FX… yeah, I usually don‘t like the feel of digital distortion. The Kemper pedal emulations… not my favorites. Interestingly, if you try the Getgood profiles, the amp distortion is pretty sweet. Modulation… the chorus is pretty nice. The upcoming Tremolo/Autopan thing seems to be an instant hit. Could there be more? Could they offer fx with less parameters which always sound good? Sure. I‘d take it Latency… I wonder if there is anything they can do. They might be at the limit software-wise and the internal latency of the converters can only be improved by using new converters. But what‘s the worst case scenario with the Kemper? Sub 5ms, isn‘t it? I‘m really picky with latency, I‘m completely useless with amp plugins, even though my computer has a roundtrip latency of 4-7ms, depending on buffer setting. I don‘t feel any disconnect with the Kemper.
@pizzaisgood4877
@pizzaisgood4877 Час назад
@@mehAudioI’m talking latency. NAM is 0.8ms. That is insanely good. If Kemper matched that and then refined their profiles to offer more epochs like NAM does, then maybe make it variable so you can choose, add in a higher quad core processor upgrade, add a touch screen, now you are back at the top of the game. Flagship product right there. Any of the companies can do this but will they is the question. Fractal could add capture tech to their AXE FX and get in the touchscreen game and they’d be on top clearly too.

Plugins are a huge pain in the rear for a hardware manufacturer. Keeping them compatible long-term is quite expensive and from all the drama I gather that there is no way of pricing plugins fairly for those who feel slighted right now. Even giving them away to hardware owners for free would be interpreted as damage control. And now that we get the plugins for free, why would we have to pay for the feature upgrade of the Player to a capture-able device? Why would Kemper invest tens of thousands of €s, just to give the stuff away?

I like the rig manager UI. It's simple to use if you come from a desktop background and not an 'appley' phone app background. Thats exactly what you get in rig manager.
@Paul-D
@Paul-D 7 часов назад
I should probably add since I started.... I do think the level 2 & 3 upgrades are expensive - It actually leaves kemper only valuing the profiling ability and all the extra functionality at a few hundred dollars..... that doesn't make alot of sense. Although the people be-moaning it for not being free I don't agree with either. Same for the people that say they were about to buy a player but now there not, that doesn't make sense either. I think the upgrade package should've been a one off $99 software upgrade that then got you into the FREE upgrade cycle that always existed on the older kempers.
@AEP2x
@AEP2x 2 часа назад
They need to fully update their profiling algorithms, make an actual modern piece of hardware with a touch screen and a good UI! Update the UI on the Rig Manager to match, and then come out swinging. They could compete and grow their user base again at a fair price compared to the current market. What they should have done is give the effects and features update to the player for free, and you hit the nail on the head in saying make a plugin version that people who own the player could buy to make profiles on their computer and use as a standalone Kemper version for 19@ or maybe even 299.00 Would have made users happy and all kinds of people would buy that even if they didn't have a Kemper or if the had the player and wanted to make profiles. New hardware and UI along with the Plugin and free updates for the player would have brought them relevant again!

Making computers isn't sustainable unless you're Apple (because it's new hardware every year). Hardware is only profitable if it sells software (at least in today's economy). Kemper is just selling computers. They need predictable recurring revenue or they won't survive. Everyone saying they hated the paid upgrade don't understand what it means to create a sustainable business model. If you want something nice and want to continue to receive support for it, pay the money. That's how the world economy works; no one's entitled to anything free.

They could have used a VST version years ago. ToneX completely ate their lunch on that, ironically coming from the opposite direction. Might still be a good idea though. Kemper FX seem to sound good from your demo. I'm cautious as far as their brand recognition, which has never been for FX, but you have a point about existing users. IMO, as far as the paid upgrade fiasco, the best thing they could do is to fix that. Change the price structure and make the extra blocks cheap or free and you can keep the extra models as being paid. Make it all a la carte would be a good move as well.
@mehAudio
@mehAudio Час назад
@@yikelu do you have any idea how complex and expensive developing a la carte is? Where does the underlying technology come from?
@yikelu
@yikelu Час назад
@@mehAudio Huh? You mean specifically the technology to unlock specific features based on licensing? You mean taking what they already did with the tiered upgrade system just maybe 2 steps further and splitting the components more? I'm not talking about full "every effect on its own", but you can separate the upgrades into smaller packs that are more easily digestible. Like the extra blocks for $50, the models for $150. Also you do realize that if they had the idea of making the Player upgradeable from the start, that feature locking ability is an already sunk cost of the development by that point. And that they spent extra money developing abilities on the player that actively made it worse from the beginning in order to sell product later? And yes, I do software development, so I'm generally aware of the difficulty of software development. I fully support the general idea of Kemper charging for upgrades. Where they went wrong is the pricing structure, especially the incredibly tone deaf idea of locking extra blocks behind the highest upgrade tier. How much dev effort does it take to allow more blocks (which the Player must have been capable of from the beginning)? Changing a couple of integers?
@mehAudio
@mehAudio 44 минуты назад
@@yikelu so you do understand how it works, then. They probably branched the source. Then they created a new build target and then they developed the hardware abstraction for the Player. Given the different hardware, they then had to pick the functionality for the initial release and develop a separate UI/UX to expose the feature set to the interface. So far, nobody has removed anything or made anything intentionally worse. There is a whole bunch of features which aren‘t accessible. Because nobody has adapted them for the Player. After the release version, they would have to merge the branches and introduce feature flags so they can configure which device gets which feature. And every feature shared with the Player causes extra effort for the specific UI/UX. Which means that every software update after the introduction of the Player costs more effort than before. Even bug fixes. Then they likely defined the two additional feature levels. As far as I know, you upgrade a specific device, not every device a user owns. If so, that can be implemented with a relatively easy challenge/response mechanism. Now, a la carte increases the complexity a lot. Even if you don‘t offer bundles and/or up/crossgrades, bulk discounts, etc. Even if you don‘t sync the activation across devices. What do you do with Presets/Performances? Deactivate the a la carte that the user hasn‘t purchased? Keep them but only allow playing them, not change parameters? What about morphing and pedals assigned to parameters of a la carte modules the user doesn‘t own? What about backward and forward compatibility of presets?
@yikelu
@yikelu 27 минут назад
@@mehAudio Let me put it this way. Regardless of the cost to implement, users are going to take one look at the competitor next door (IK Multimedia) and see that they have a well functioning system for a la carte purchasing. And as well, your questions about what do with presets (ie, other content made by other people that will not work because of missing models / features) is pretty simple. Yeah, deactivate them. iLok does it, old Line 6 gear (which had upgrade packs) does it. But also ... the responsibility lies with the content creator, not the original manufacturer to clearly communicate what is required. Also, you realize my point is that full a la carte is a suggestion of what makes the most logical sense to an end consumer *without* having to fuss over whether their pricing structure makes the most sense. That would be the logical business approach, leaving aside software dev headaches. But that is just one of several alternatives, with the key point being that enabling extra blocks should be the least expensive upgrade option. If there were 3 tiers and the first was something like $50 for extra blocks and the last 2 were otherwise similar to what they are now, I'm guessing there wouldn't be nearly so much backlash.

What fiasco? Other than Kemper staff needing to stay away from cameras (and the jesus clowns), there was none. Approx. 99% of negativity came from people not owning a Kemper. I did the paid upgrades because I wanted them to replace my Kemper Stage with something smaller - net profit after selling it and buying both upgrades around 700 Euros. The conception that the Kemper is outdated is simply wrong. I have a Kemper Rack in my home studio, a Kemper Player on my board, a Tonex pedal, a HX Stomp XL, and an Axe-Fx III (which I have not used in almost a year). If I want the best possible tone and effects with the least amount of effort - Kemper wins all the time. The Tonex is wonderful, but editing is a nightmare, volume leveling rigs is a nightmare, and the effects are more than decent for the price, but compared to the studio quality stuff in the Kemper, they are not even on the same planet. Yes, the captures in the Tonex and NAM are a bit better - but absolutely no one will hear that difference in a mix, with some good models you can't even tell a capture apart from a model in the HX, Ampero, or Axe-FX. On the plus side, volume leveling is a no-brainer in the Kemper, since volume and gain are completely independent, dynamics (pick sensitivity, cleanup etc.) can be fine tuned (something absolutely no other product has), every output has its own eq and room settings, the spring reverb is better than anything else on the market (including Axe, Meris, and Strymon), and the ability to backup and restore rigs, performances, user settings, and even the remote configuration to/from a simple USB stick, without the need for a computer, phone, or cloud service is a life-saver. Would I like a vst or stand-alone app? Well, yes, but only because admittedly re-amping with the Kemper is cumbersome (need to swap cables) unless you are fine with the 44.1 kHz USB feature. And, for the people who want that, an upgraded unit that can do dual cabs and dual amps would certainly be useful.

I have some physical pedals because they do a thing, but if I’m sat at home in my music room for the majority of time I’m playing guitar why not use my computer for everything? The sound quality of even the affordable audio interfaces is insanely good now. The computing power in my Mac far surpasses whatever companies are going to put into these boxes. I feel like we’re attached to the hardware when we don’t need to be. On top of that, you can use plug-ins for reverb and other effects, like Valhalla's reverbs (which are still $50 each) that are as good as or better than any of the effects these units provide. Lol, guitar and youtube community create DRAMA from nothing. Not sure if Kemper owes anyone in guitar community smth. For 15 years providing the most stable OS and platform kinda strange to throw sht in Kemper. This 300 bucks thing is just a cancel culture in guitar community. When guitarist stop being dumbaf? Simply remember Kemper legacy is access virus and kemper profiler. Two legendary devices that defined last 25 years of gigging hardware for guitarists and synth guys. Come on. Stop speculating on their decisions. World doesnt rotate around individuals. Better ask Ik multimedia when a VST company invest money to create a stable plugin instead of laggy-creepy thingy they give you with tonex for 500 bucks, but no one cares

In business, there are no thank you's for the past. I have a Kemper Stage, among others, and the reality is the market has caught up, and in the case of effects, surpassed it. You can do stuff like charging for capabilities when you have leverage, but they no longer have that leverage, no longer the top dog, now just part of the pack. There are no thank you's for the past in business.

@@Bridging_the_Political_Dividewhat kind of "surpassing" you are talking about? You can count devices that provide similar all-in-one package. However, most of them lack functionality here and there. I dont get why community is forcing 300 bukcs thread, when there are more major issues with products that currently are advertised as "kemper killers". I dont get really what objective damage Kemper company did to its product users or community as a whole for continuing overusing upgrade topic and trying to judge for kemper financial state We cant really think of major kemper competitors that provide similar long-term support and overall ecosystem. Helix is the closest one. Fractal is the second. Others are too young and buggy.

@@Bridging_the_Political_Divide see this is a completely valid argument. They've priced themselves out of the market, not done anything unethical. The toddlers on this section are cracking me up so its nice to see an actual argument that doesn't = they didn't make it cost what I want so waaaahh.

Tonex is to Kemper as Behringer is to Boss. No one is arguing that Boss pedals should be £20. There's a lot of toys out the pram going on around this 'fiasco' as you call it Cordytron. The Player is as marketed on launch. Now you can pay more to upgrade it to their flagship capability without Kemper's IP being devalued. Stepped pricing and subscription models are how business is adapting to the digital world where IP is more at risk and a cost of living crisis means users like staggered payments. Customers are well within their rights to buy a Tonex / Nano Cortex (lol) so not sure why everyone is so outraged? I love my HX Stomp but I might grab a Player second hand and then buy the upgrade. I was waiting for the Nano Cortex to drop and well yeah... Nope.

@@adamwilcox6405 no not at all. It's just a cheaper price point for a younger product/platform. Behringer pedals sound the same (clones - see the JHS vid) so with a Boss you're paying more for essentially the same product out of brand loyalty and a better shell. My point is if one is unhappy with Kempers pricing you are free to buy the ToneX. Premium pricing has been a strategy for decades, there's nothing inherently unethical about it in a free market. My issue is with people slagging off Kemper, I just don't get it.

Kemper is off the table. I will never buy a Kemper product. The competition are just as good or better and don't try to fleece you. Kemper need to suffer, then maybe this paid upgrade thing will go away. Thank you Kemper for narrowing my choices.
@davidcjupp
@davidcjupp 7 часов назад
Explain how they tried to 'fleece' anyone? They sold a product as marketed then gave you the option to upgrade at a later date. It's Neural that released a product with the QC that didn't deliver on its promised functionality on launch and took years to correct that. I own neither but I really don't understand people pretending that Kemper has done something unethical.

@@davidcjupp I choose NOT to buy their products. I can buy from a rival and get non-gimped hardware or hardware that improves over time. I don't get charged for that. My next purchase will probably be from the same brand. They get good word of mouth as to why it is worth buying that brand. So yes, they can do what they want and so can I. The first modeler to make Linux control software will get a sale from me. I would not look at the rivals as they are half products to me. See how that works? Give people a reason to buy your stuff. Kemper can do one. How is that for word of mouth? PS I would not buy Neural, I'll wait for a finished version 2nd hand. My advice to anyone is 'Don't get Kempered'.

@@tiomkinnyborg2289 totally agree - I've said that people are free to shop elsewhere if they think the IP is over priced and stepped pricing is a turn off. Kemper are not a charity. They haven't gimped the hardware, they've held back software features behind a paywall. This is such a common pricing practice in digital, it's just new to the guitar space hence the toys out the pram. Now if Kemper had promised the flagship ability on their marketing and then on release asked for £300 to unlock it that is different, but they didn't do that. It's not the hardware that is the IP, it's the software as you will know. The full set of features is what is worth the flagship money, not the massive toaster box hahaha. Helix offered increased functionality for free. So buy Helix (like I did)
