Can the Oilers afford to allow Draisaitl to enter next season without an extension?

Leon Draisaitl, who has one year remaining on the eight-year, $68M contract he signed in 2017, told the media on Wednesday that he will take some time to assess his future. TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joins Ryan Rishaug to discuss Draisaitl's future in Edmonton, how much money he might get on his next deal, and if the Oilers can afford to allow him to enter next season without an extension in place.

Draisaitl's cap, based on my own valuation of offensive players points to salary (100k per expected point), is in the $12.5 to $13 million range. McDavid has consistently hurt Draisaitl's production through his Oilers career because McDavid always has to have the hottest and best wingers playing with him to produce. Drasaitl has consistently gotten 3rd and 4th line wingers to play with, and should any of them get hot they're immediately moved to McDavid's wing. He's in the $14 to $15 million range on a team where he's consistently getting to play with top line wingers. He's a $15+ million dollar player in Nashville, where he'll no longer be able to put up 4 points a game against them for the duration of his contract.

You make valid points but Drai is 29, not very fast, been getting injured left and right when it matters... his style of play will not age well. If they sign him which I hope they do, it should not be for more than 5 years
@FailedBard
@FailedBard 3 месяца назад
@@SimplyTheBestCSGO I think if they go 5 years they have to go way higher on the AAV which hurts the team. If they go 5 years with Draisaitl I could see it being as high as $16 million aav for that, $80 million over 5 years rather than likely $104 (13 million aav) over 8. Draisaitl and McDavid are probably both looking at it as their last deals, and they'll want whatever/wherever gets them the most security going into retirement. If they can't/won't move Nurse, and Bouchard gets $10, that could be $50 million over 4 players in 2 years time. $53 million if they try to go shorter term. How do you even justify that to the other 20 players splitting the remaining $40 million-ish? I don't see how they'll make it work tbh keeping all the stars.

Help me out here with the UFA 'walks for nothing' business. I tried to read it on reddit/hockey, but couldn't see the answer in a forest of threads. Best I can understand it, if you sign Draisatl in order to trade him, then in a trade you get to choose from the pool of similarly talented players that are also under contract. If you let him walk, then in a subsequent acquisition to replace him you get to choose from the completely separate pool of players that are not under contract. Either way, you have the same amount of purchasing power, the same amount of cap room. It's really which of the two pools of players is better to choose from, that's all. So walking for nothing has nothing to do with it. That's a misnomer. Am I right or completely out to lunch??
@azaz911c
@azaz911c 3 месяца назад
I think the advantage of trading a player under contract is two fold: leverage and the potential to extract players under contract from another team that wants Draisaitl and the chance to negotiate with him. Lets suppose the Oilers want player x under contract with NYR. If the Oilers let Draisaitl walk, and they have one less asset to bargain with. Trading for players under contract may be much more attractive than bidding for UFAs because there is greater selection, more certainty and less teams competing for them (unlike high demand UFAs which can be overpaid).
@jaythompson5102
@jaythompson5102 3 месяца назад
Bird in the hand is better than the bird in the bush. If you have player A who is a little better than player B but player B is signed for five more years whereas player A is a UFA, player B may well be more valuable of an asset overall so long as they are playing up to their contract.
@Beeaatbox
@Beeaatbox 3 месяца назад
Leon Draisaitl has a 10 team no trade clause and a full no move clause until the end of next season, which grants him the rights to say either I'm staying in Edmonton for the season's entirety, or I would like to be traded, excluding these 10 teams. If they allow him to finish out next season and then let him become a UFA, they will lose the potential to trade him alone or in a package deal, possibly including for top end goaltenders and/or defensemen. As you said, they will then be looking at other RFA/UFAs to sign, and can no longer scout for better players who are typically under contract because you've lost your trade piece. You're limited to a much smaller and frankly inferior pool of players than previous, as you would've have been able to say to "I will trade you Draisaitl for players X, Y, and Z." You always want your best players under contract, and if you cannot afford them, you need to trade them for players you can afford or want to afford.
@christyouredumb956
@christyouredumb956 3 месяца назад
Trading a player can give you picks/prospects/players where if someone just walks that players value was wasted. Look at the matt tkchuck situation with Calgary. They knew he wanted out so instead of the player just leaving Calgary attempted to get value back for the player.

Also.. what the hell is Button smoking?? The FURTHEST the Islanders went WITH Tavares was the second round. Where they lost. In just 5 games. To Tampa. And not a Tampa team that made 3 straight Finals. Nope. A Tampa team that lost to Pittsburgh the very next round. Tavares has gone just as far and been just as successful as he was with the Islanders. There's literally no difference between the two. It just doesn't feel like a fluke when the Leafs make the playoffs. Might feel like a fluke when they win a round, but they make the playoffs like clockwork. With NYI, Tavares was lucky to make it back to back seasons. Not similar. Not at all, actually. The only thing better for Draisatl leaving would be winning a Cup. This is literally as close as you can get without one. A one goal loss in a game 7. Comparing it to Tavares is pointless with that "Well, you never won anything with the Leafs either". Never came close with the Islanders, why not leave? Draisatl was close. Agonizingly so. Still don't think that matters much. It's not horseshoes and hand grenades. I'd stick with it one more year. Florida did, they won. If you fall short again, then move. But I wouldn't rush to sign this extension. Honestly, I'd make Bouchard and Ekholm a priority. It's clear that their maturation makes Edmonton a stronger team and Hyman & RNH at least cover what Leon does in the regular season. If someone with a bit more defensive capability and the capacity to add something offensively comes along, picks and a trade. He's Ekblad 2 years ago: incredibly offensively competent but lacking in the style of hockey that wins championships. And he's not going to become that player, so find someone who can leave their ego by the door and contribute in a way that isn't just numbers on the scoresheet.

I think this logic is a sound strategy…I think the Oilers see what kind of players they can get . Maybe help the D or a starter in net . Skinner has earned the right to be given a chance but can he do it again? Then you add the Nurse Contract that is way too high . In the final the depth player like Janmark, McLeod, Holloway , Brown all outperformed Driasaitl at times. I would not want to be in a Leaf’s situation where 3-5 players take a huge chunk of the cap . That model doesn’t work as we have seen . I think he could help the Oilers get set up to compete for yrs with the return he would garner . This is a really tough call with many factors. If Leon gets 14 million , Connor 16-17 million , Bouchard 10 million, Nurse 9 Million …. Oiler essentially are stuck like the leafs . Even at a 94 million cap increase that is a tight cap gap to think you can build a top team on 50 million of space . Esp in Canada with the tax laws and that alone makes players want to go south .
