Today I left the Half Moon Bay harbor with high hopes, but the wind soon picked up creating rough seas for the Porta-Bote. Determined to catch at least one rockfish, I headed out to my fishing grounds...

This just popped up as I was looking for a PortaBote, I have a 10 foot Avon RIB now but it’s too small with only one bench seat with fishing or scuba gear I can’t bring anyone else. I usually go in lakes and bays with much less chop than that so that’s promising. Thanks for posting

I’ve had and used my Porta bote for almost 20 years, and it never ceases to amaze me how guys take their bote out into the ocean or big water where there is a possibility of big waves. Because the gunwales are so low, It wouldn’t take a huge wave to swamp the boat (ask me how I know). Please be careful.

BigT what are your favorite tips for using this boat and favorite uses for it? Been looking into them for a long time but havent met many owners

@@ewingsharp8916 I use it as a fishing boat and fold it up with each use. Know the limitations of the boat and use it accordingly. I use mine in relatively small inland bodies of water with moderate boating traffic. You definitely would want to avoid high boating traffic and big wakes. Although the boat won’t sink, if it fills with water it will become very unstable and roll (dumping you and everything not bolted down into the water). If you are going to be using it by yourself, the 10’ or 12’ will be much more manageable if you are using it as a truly folding boat. Boat is not meant for major speed. A 6 HP outboard is plenty enough to get you where you need to be. Hope this helps.

Bring 2" camo gulp sandworms and size 1 mosquito hooks on double dropper loop, catches everything from sand dabs to big rockfish but whole shrimp from asian supermarket is always the ticket tho

Thanks for sharing, my qs is, why wont ppl get inflatable instead? Like from saturn lineup you can get half the price like for $1,500, heavy duty fb385 with tripled load capacity and ability to mount 25hp outboard motor. Why would you limit yourself? Plus if it gets choppy and your boat gets covered by waves you wont sink on inflatable. But on foldable youll go down quickly, i cannot believe it cost 3k usd for 12ft, mind boggling.

The portabote, like any boat, has its advantages and disadvantages. For myself, I don't have the storage space or transportation means for a RIB. Since I drive a sedan, the porta boat works bc it goes on the roof racks while everything else goes in the back. A RIB might be better for you, but the portabote is perfect for me. Yeah the 2.3hp got the job done. It only went like 4-5 mph max, but super reliable and easy on gas. I love mine and still have it despite having a 5hp now.

What size motor do you think would pair up right with a 14 ft porta bote. I'm looking into getting one

Hey! It depends on where you are boating. Most people with the 14 foot get a 5-6 hp, but if you are only traveling a short distance, you can go as low as 2hp. I think some will use a 2 stroke 8ish hp, since they are lighter. I have the 12 foot and recently got a 5hp, which i think is pushing the limits of what the boat can handle. hope that helps!

I had eight footer with 2.3 Honda not the motor go with which I had to five. I have a 12 footer at the house haven’t used yet no motor yet looking at a nine horse for that if you go bigger the better you are.

I run a 2 hp air cooled honda motor! This thing is great! I typically get 4-5 mph, but the motor only weights 30 lbs and has great fuel efficiency. I recently bought a 5hp, so that will be much nicer for larger trips.

It’s a shame when people want to show how their boats perform in rough conditions by playing music which takes away the appreciation of the sea conditions the boat is battling with.
