AMD is supposed to be good price to performance but the Alienware M18 config you are forced to get it in is ultra expensive with the most expensive AMD CPU option. in Canada anyway it's like minimum $3600. I wish the 7900M was available in a more affordable config/system.

7945HX/7900M/QHD is list price cheaper here on Dell Aus website by a few hundred over 13900HX/4080/FHD (1080p? Really?) But also chronically out of stock, so who knows if the price is legit...

I think that is an effort to show the 7900M in the best light possible. Slower CPUs might even limit this card in some scenarios.

Really excited to see the 7900m in more products, 12gb of VRAM will be the minimum for >A games shortly. The 1 model for this sucks, 1080p on 18" is fine, but 3k USD for 'fine' is not good enough, Dell also overcharges for their RAM/SDD upgrades. 7945HX is also a lot if you aren't doing content creation, maybe it hits a threshold in RPCS3 that the 7845 & 7745 miss? Planning on buying a different SKU of this product if the glitches and battery life issues are fixed in a later update, and a 1440p option becomes available.

I think the screen options are the weakest point for the M18 compared to other notebooks of this form factor. The QHD variant is ok(-ish), but as you said, if that is sufficient for such a premium product ....

Hey Alex/NotebookCheckReviews seen this laptop about,it would be a dream laptop if these issues weren’t apparent dim screens/awful screen options, no thunderbolt 4 and the extortionate price. Pretty sad that an AMD Advantage laptop has all of these issues. It already was/is very late, so they should have taken the extra time to polish it. Unless the power consumption can't be fixed and is sadly a characteristic of chiplets, then it would make sense that given this big disadvantage will be there, a few extra bugs aren't a big deal... let's hope Zen 5 and rdna 4 will have less bugs on laptops

@@NotebookcheckReviews thanks. i had to return mine though. i use my laptop unplugged for a good bit of the day and i couldnt deal with the battery life of 90 min or less even when just browsing. wish id have known as id have ordered a 4080 version instead when they where both on sale.

Jesus Christ. Gaming laptops have always had notorious bad battery life but this one is so far behind all the others, "embarassing" is the perfect word to use in this situation.

Thanks for this. Was seriously considering the AMD all out setup because the pricing is bananas. $2300 maxed out with lowest storage. But of the performance isn’t where I expect, there’s no point in saving $1000 vs the 4090. Thanks!

I use my laptop beyond gaming and that's why Nvidia for the foreseeable future is reigning supreme - does a lot of DL, ML task and games like a boss too. AMD is at least 2 generation behind

Agreed, AMD is a great choice for "traditional" gaming, but with all the latest tech stuff, NVIDIA is quite a bit ahead!

They would be pretty much on par. The Intel version might be a bit more stable since it has been out for longer.

It's interesting how, with Dell's flagship XPS line staunchly refusing to consider AMD CPUs, even during the height of the performance disparity during 9th through 11th Intel gens, Alienware actually sports their best stuff. The 6850M was only available on an Alienware, afaik. It's extremely unfortunate how late this is coming. AMD has revolutionized the CPU game against Intel, but their GPU division, while they do have very nice hardware, the marketing, software and supply aspects are very lacking. They refuse to shake up the market, and in mobile solutions they have serious supply issues. I wonder if the refusal to shake things up is them being afraid of NVIDIA going aggressive, as team green can absolutely tank undercutting AMD GPUs much harder and longer than AMD can undercut NVIDIA.

Honestly, XPS having Intel only made sense at the time. It wasn't until 2023 that AMD properly supported Thunderbolt devices. The inability to use Dell's many TB docks for a slim laptop with only USB-C ports would have made it hard to push. And then now that it's 2023 and AMD finally supports USB4 out of the box, Intels are not quite so bad for slim laptops anymore.

in Canada only dell m18 offer this combination....in couple of months asus and other will also offer. then price will come down. 7945hx3d+7900m under $3k will be a much much better deal than i9 13900HX+4090 for a $5K plus price!

People dont realize AMD's selling point is price per performance not because they want to but because they have to. When Nvidia and intel is dominating the market for their more advanced technological advancements inspite of their harsh price ranges, AMD look towards to appealing the more affordable-budget demographic because It wouldnt make sense for Team Red to compete in terms of technology when its plain obvious theirs is more inferior. But when push comes to shove every corporate entity is gonna make their move if it gets them more $$$ and that is entirely reasonable. I just wish people wouldnt declare AMD Saints for "caring for the average joe" because they DON'T. Holds true for This laptop or any amd Laptop. None of these people are your friends.

Enemy of my enemy is a friend, ever heard about it? Again its not a black and white world these companies are not particularly 'evil' as they just play by the books of capitalism. AMD definitely has better history of better corporate practices with both their consumers and AIB partners, its not wholly unreasonable that some fans will treat them as messiahs when in they end they are just another grey corporate entity with eyes for the profit.

AMD is supposed to be the underdog that everyone roots for. But even the most diehard have to admit they aren't remotely competitive. I've seen three impressions of this 7900m already and all have huge technical and stability issues. One year late and a flaming turd at launch. The laptop market is basically a monopoly at this point for Nvidia. I'm secretly happy I got an rtx 4080 for $1900 on black Friday because a week in, the prices are going back up and I won't be feeling buyer's remorse for a long while. I'm still in my return window but nope, the future looks bleak for any actual competition or better buys in the foreseeable future.

This GPU is kinda a wasted effort from AMD and is a rather pointless product. Most people are looking for sensible midrange products, not expensive high-end options. Ideally AMD should try to come up with competitive alternatives in the 4050-4080 range and just leave the very highest GPU spot for Nvidia if they can't compete there at all. The lack of Super/Ti refresh for laptops is a paints a pretty accurate picture of the GPU situation in the laptop market. Nvidia is revamping their lineup in the desktop segment, however they aren't doing with the laptop models. MLID said it best, Nvidia don't feel threatened in this market and this firstly AMD's fault. That's why we have expensive, voltage limit GPUs with smaller than expected generational uplift. Instead of releasing this GPU, AMD should have invested in a 7700 and 7800M, and also try to sell their products to more OEMs. I'd argue the prototype of the most popular gaming laptop is a Lenovo Legion with a 4060/4070, at least according to Jarrod's own data and my subjective impression. So why not make a whole range of midrange GPUs and make a deal with Lenovo and Asus? So far most AMD mobile GPUs released this year existed only on paper. The 7600S is only available in the Asus A16, the 7700S is non-existent, the first 7600M XT laptop I saw this year was released just this week by Tuxedo and is an Emdoor chassis (similar company to Clevo/Tongfang), the 7600M is non-existent, the 7900M is only available in a premium, very expensive laptop. This isn't how you compete... We need sensible midrange products in a large variety of laptops, not this kind of stuff like this Alienware.

I think the 7900M is much more of a marketing move, than something that they want/can sell in large quantities. Something to show the world that they can, at least on paper, somewhat compete in the prestigious high-end segment. As for the midrange, to compete there, you would have to move products in large quantities for OEMs to consider your silicon, and it at least seems like AMD is just unable to do that this year when it comes to GPUs. But I have no sources or data to back this up; it's just my subjective impression.

while what you say makes sense @antalpoti, a lot of non tech savvy people will only hear very little headlines about tech and as such, they will only hear about the 4090 because that is the strongest product. If AMD doesn't have a top product, they won't consider the cheap and low end options because they won't know the brand at all! AMD needs top end products in order to sell more midrange.

Disappointed. Stick with 7945HX + 4080 options. Radeon GPUs have a lot more catching up to do with Nvidia. Intel was sleeping, so AMD caught up and beat them in CPUs but Nvidia never left their foot off the gas.

I think the RX7900M is a solid option, especially given the price difference. But yes, NVIDIA is pretty much a generation ahead regarding their overall feature set. These days, it is not just about pure performance.
