Bob what you mentioned aligns perfectly with my experience getting into the upper register. To get there, depends more on your embouchure than on the mouthpiece. I choose my mouthpieces based on my lip anatomy, comfort and the tone it produces. 😊

Bob, I have to agree in that range is more a function of training than equipment. The Bach website has a mouthpiece chart that mentions the shallow depths made for players using the extreme upper register…but you have to get there first. A couple of years ago I switched from a Bach 1-1/2C to a 1E, at a time when I was just getting to G above high C. The 1E did make the F, F# and G feel more comfortable and sound stronger.

Interesting. I’ve always had difficulty trying to use different mouthpieces at the same session. Once I start with one, it doesn’t do much good to change it, however, I have had decent results switching at the start of the day and ended up settling on a Bach 10.5C for now. It’s just a little easier to play than the trusted 3C and 7C.

ahhh. so glad I found this video. I am a trombonist, but I am a brass instructor here in Jamaica, so teaching the trumpet is important. the transition from a big mouthpiece to a much smaller one is a bit disorienting. which mouthpiece do you think would be best for a trombone player switching over to the trumpet?

Hi Bob, great video again, thanks 👍. I’m definitely more comfortable on bigger mouthpieces, 17+mm diameter …. But I was discouraged a while back from playing on big mouthpieces due to a brief issue that I had with a double buzz (trumpet herald forum comment) …. So I tried a few 16.5ish diameter mouthpieces …. Did that solve my double buzz issue? It helped a bit but didn’t solve the issue completely. I’ve since, for comfort purposes, returned to 17+mm mouthpieces and my double buzz is barely an issue (unless I play with a Harmon mute, and only an issue in the low register, D & C below the stave) …. I can play fairly comfy up to high C …. I doubt I’ll need to play super-high like you need to, but I’d like to be able to …. With my bigger mouthpieces, I’m finding that it’s less the diameter that affects my range and more the deep of the cup …. Top C is much more difficult for me on my Alliance Brass Prestige #2 (very deep cup, wonderful rich low-middle register, resonant above the stave, but top C is hard work for me just now) than on my (shinny new) Yamaha Mark Gould Signature mouthpiece, or my Yamaha Tom Hooten Signature …. I love my Alliance #2 so I’m trying to solidify my range on my Yamaha’s in the hood that top C/D will eventually become easier on my Alliance 👍. Does that make sense at all, anyone? Kind regards, Donald 🎺🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
