Can the TRACK GANG fix the track without DELAYING THE TRAIN?

During their track inspection, our track gang determined we had some wide gauge at one point on the railroad. Not wide enough to cause problems; but getting close, so it was time to bring it back in. With revenue service trains operating at the museum, there's only one hour for us to make it happen... can we finish repairs without delaying the train?

What a friendly, and accommodating group of old men. Usually old men from a very specific industry are salty and unwilling to teach or help. All these old guys seem eager to share their knowledge and teach the younger generation - especially if they're not as handy or showing a satisfactory level of common sense for the task at hand. A welcome sight since my industry (machining) has so many salty old men unwilling to let anyone into their world.

@@Hyce777 I plan to! This is a dream job for me and if I do eventually get it I will be sure to do everything I can to stay safe. And of course, with a little railroader's luck I may even wind up making it a career - and of course my ultimate goal if I do get the job is to do well enough to be posted to the UP Heritage Fleet out of Cheyenne. Running UP 844 or hell, 4014 in real life is my idea of a dream come true. (Isn't it every railroading boy's dream though?) But that's a long way off and will take a high level of seniority, so I need to really be on the ball and do my best work. Wish me high greens!

Although on your Discord I complain a lot about manual labor trackwork, it truly is a good thing to learn, especially if you are an engineer, as you can understand the types of forces the train exerts on the rail, and what kind of stresses different types of train handling exerts on the track. I see you are learning all the things I had to learn when doing trackwork, pulling spikes can be a pain, especially the outside spikes in a curve when they get plate cut from the rail moving back and forth.

Yea that’s the problem with curves, keeping the outside rail from shifting can be tricky. I’m kinda shocked they didn’t have a 36” track gauge, it’s probably somewhere in the shed. It would be super easy to outfit a scooter with a laser tool to figure out how far the gauge was out. Tho I bet there are sections of mainline in CO where the gauge is way out from anything at the museum. Heck I’ve walked a bit of the grade at D&S and they don’t even have double spikes per plate and much of the time they’re loose anyway. lol 😂 Still, good video and nice to see they care about the ROW so much.

Just out of curiosity, why move the outside rail in to fix wide gauge? I was taught that in that instance you move the inside rail in on the curve because the outside rail sees all the stress of the flanges, and the inside rail just supports the weight of the wheels. It doesn’t make a difference if they’re new ties but on old ties you’re plugging and then putting more holes in the same tie, which has potential for the wear to move out easier than before it was new. I’ve been apart of a similar project where the track gauge was 58 3/4 on a tight corner at the crest of a hill, and the old head overseeing the work explained why you pull in the inside rail. Again just curious, looking forward to feedback
@Hyce777
@Hyce777 2 года назад
I'll ask art tomorrow, but I'll bet it has to do with how sharp our curve is here. Moving the inside to match the outside makes for a sharper curve, and we're already getting close to 30 degrees here.
@adamcordell
@adamcordell 2 года назад
