I sold my 750 Intruder last year due lung cancer, I didn't have the strength to handle it. I thought my riding days were over. I bought a 250 Vstar and I'm able to keep riding. I can do 75 mph and that's enough for me

Richard, I'm sorry to hear of your lung cancer. I hope you are faring well. I'm 71 and I was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis about 18 months ago. It's getting worse but slowly, I think. I've had 3 and 4 wheelers in the past and I've owned an ridden smaller Honda and a friends Yamaha Virago 650 when I was younger so I know a bit about riding and it occurred to me recently that as a bucket list thing I should see about getting one of these V Star 250 cruisers and getting out for fresh air and a small amount of exercise. cooler weather

Highway riding also involves the wind factor and the weight of the bike (and rider). Without a fairing or windshield riding over time and distance gets tiring. You also get wobbles if you're being passed by larger vehicles. On a bike like this, I'd stick to 55-60mph and enjoy an unhurried ride.
@carolpascua1848
@carolpascua1848 3 года назад
Absolutely agree. I'm a 145 lb. female on a Honda Shadow 750 and I can still feel the wobble from large trucks that go by on the highway. My buddies told me that the 750 would compensate for my lack of weight. Perhaps I am heavier overall, but it's still unnerving. I can't even imagine taking a 250 out on a busy highway like that!
@Propapanda0213

@martycrow

@@Propapanda0213 So much is about personal preference and what you mean by "long rides". Three hours on a highway with cold air hitting your chest at 60mph is not pleasant, so a windshield worked for me. But I managed without one when my daily ride was up to an hour, at 20/30mph stop-start, in the city.

don't ever let anyone tell you that a 249cc cannot get in the highway. As a matter of fact, there is nothing more practical to ride than a 249cc. And (a little secret, ssssh!) most of us (regardless of what we ride) spent more than 90% of our daily rides in secondary roads. I personally (1130cc) seldom get my ride in the highway. So to say, if you like riding, a 250 is mostly a very pleasant motorcycle to go around every day and not getting a complicated life. Matter of opinion, I guess.

I LOVE the charm of this Yamaha. It sounds like a perfectly tuned machine. What more could you want in a smaller, dependable bike than a 250cc V-Twin ? How cool is that ? Very cool. My brother's partner made the mistake of buying him a Vulcan 900 as his first bike. It was a beast and WAY too much bike for him and it made him hate motorcycles. Mind you my brother and I rode my Honda XR80 in the 1980's all the time, and fast forward 30 years and my brother's partner should've got him this bike. EDIT : You're on the freeway effortlessly !

Sure it can, a 250 will do 70 miles per hour or better, fast enough. As far as riding, you need to relax guy, take it easy, check your mirrors slowly, make your changes slowly, don't worry about looking at everything that passes you. You just need to relax and don't push the bike too much as you're learning.

@@rbdshadow7272 That may be true for some vehicles, but definitely not all. It's all about the transmission and the particular 150 you have. Not all engines are made even relatively equal. That said, I actually have an X-Pro Bali 150 with the GY6 150cc, I did a bit of upgrading, but, I have it to the point that highway travel isnt a problem, but it takes a lot longer now to get to top speed. Basically, you can get transmission kits and engine kits that allow you to increase your top speed by a huge margin. Essentially it changes the engine into either a 170, 190, or 232cc engine, and you can increase the stroke with a crank for further displacement, on top of that add the EFI kit or the Carb kit, change your cvt rollers out, get a sprocket swap and Tahhhdaaahh, you have a highway capable vehicle brand new for less than $1,800 all said and done. The top speed right now is still only 80 but around here with the highway limit being 55-65, it no longer winds itself out to get to the speed limit. If you dont have tons of money to buy a vehicle to get around, I highly suggest going to Amazon and getting any of the X-Pro Bikes. You can get full sized motorcycles from them for anywhere from $1,200 up to about $3,000, But if you got $750 you can get one of their 150cc Scooters or their Cafe racer style bikes, and it's perfect for getting back and forth. So far I have a little over 1500 miles on the odometer, and its runs amazing.

Yes a V-Star 250 can handle the highway. But I suggest not getting too far from home on it, and have a road service plan. It has tube type tires that are much easier to puncture than tubeless tires, and require a tow truck when you have a flat. I stay within the towing range of my road service plan. I have had it up to 76 mph GPS. I'm 6' 240 and fit fine. Too bad about the tube type tires, if it weren't for that it would make a great small touring bike. I have tried windshields, they make things FAR WORSE for me. I'd rather have the wind blast spread out evenly than concentrated directly at my head. My jacket and full face helmet provide plenty of wind protection.

Honestly Unless you're riding the highway everyday or going on long long road trips, a 250cc is more than enough. I always hated the "Its not enough for a man" bullshit. I ride a scooter everyday all day long and I love it. Granted I did a lot of modification to it, but I only have like $1,800 in total sunk into it. I literally bought an X-Pro 150cc bali, (Yes, from amazon) for $750 shipped to my front door, I went online and bought a kit to turn it into a 232cc, then swapped out the carb for an EFI kit. After that just a few tweaks to the fuel delivery and an upgraded CDI to let the redline go from like 4500ish up to 9,000rpm and now the thing is an absolute monster. XD Oh, and I did get a new CVT kit for the added torque and to shift the power to the top end which highly increased my top speed. My scooter can outrun most small motorcycles without any problems at all, including the Rebel 300 and bikes in that range. If you put the work in, you can make those GY6 Honda and Honda Clone engine insanely fast, I've seen guys that have them going well over 100mph and still room to fly lol. They even make kits where you can swap your Rukus over to a 232cc lol

downsized a few years ago...shadow 750 to a v star 250; twas a compromise...I wanted a suzuki S40 but couldn't afford it; my v star 250 has the drag bars so my 'tactile' interface is different from the buckhorn bars on yours; the fastest I have had mine was 65-70 mph for short distances & usually 50-55 mph for longer distances; while the bike can handle it, my hands suffer from the higher rpm's above 50 mph due to vibrations in the handlebar...
